Bad part is that they took a lot of good vehicles off the road and the government (our tax dollars) overpaid for them. Many people that can't afford a new car but really drive clunkers that are unsafe, burn oil, & leak fluids should have been able to exchange their clunker for one of these good, safe, reliable vehicles. That would have been "greener" and taken a true clunker off the road.

Actually they have to drain the oil and add sodium silicate to the crankcase. It will suck into the oil pump and turns into glass in the cylinder walls and oil ports and makes the engine seize.

I hate to see good cars trashed, I love my 1998 ford ranger. It never lets me down, it always starts and runs. It has 197,930 miles on it, it doesn't burn oil, in fact it runs like new. I am keeping it for as long as I am alive, and I would love to beat up the ass wipe who thought of this evil act. A true automotive technician hates to destroy these cars, and I seen first hand the problems with "new" cars from my automotive class at my high school.

As a child I always saw other people who had these cars and their smiliar counterparts, whether older or newer and I always wanted one and further solidified my decison into getting one after researching the reliability and power these vehicles had. But our government is all about money and this "going green" bullshit. They ruined hundreds of thousands of cars that would perform better than any car today.

Not only did this program destroy so many pieces of automotive history, but most of these vehicles were in very good condition. This beautiful Caprice wagon (with an LT1 nonetheless) being just one of them. Now people who drive these older vehicles will have a harder time obtaining parts, and people who can't afford new cars will have a harder time finding reliable quality transportation.
Thank the Lord Jesus Christ that this program was limited to cars 25 years and newer. Some of the coolest, most far-out classic cars from the 1970's and earlier would've been destroyed in a heartbeat.

In a desperate attempt to kick start the economy, something no government has been able to in all of recorded history, the "Cash for Clunkers" was created. This plan provides subsidies of up to $4,500 when drivers trade in their older cars. One stipulation of this plan is that the old car's engine must be destroyed. Time did a great article on this. I dont think we had to blow up the engines. problem was, ppl then illegaly reselled the cars and that wasnt what the government wanted. I think blowing up the engines is to be sure nobody can sell the car again. I mean, I think they also wanna do sth good for the environment. still some cars just shuldnt be blown up. it just hurts.

I'm from finland and i thought our car taxing-system etc. sucks (for example, the price of mercedes benz S65 amg is est. 470 000 euros (668 339 USD!!!!!!) and over half of its price is just taxes, because it doesen't have a hippie engine). But this is just cruel. Those car still work perfectly. Manufacturing new cars to replace old cars is more enviromentaly dangerous than driving old vehilces until they break. F*ck, why in the world we cannot just enjoy driving without taxes, stupid systems etc

I hate to see good cars trashed, I love my 1998 ford ranger. It never lets me down, it always starts and runs. It has 197,930 miles on it, it doesn't burn oil, in fact it runs like new. I am keeping it for as long as I am alive, and I would love to beat up the ass wipe who thought of this evil act. A true automotive technician hates to destroy these cars, and I seen first hand the problems with "new" cars from my automotive class at my high school.

@benchod94 hate to break it but that car got 25 mpg. big land boat wagon. and that lt1 motor was a 500,000 mile motor and then some. never saw Toyota over 200,000. this car was well proven but bad judgement such as you guys brought this....''the last of the true chevys'' out of production. we had one of these with a 305 in it and it got better mpgs then our mini van. then my buddy had a roadmaster estate bought it with 97k sold it with 217k miles and only spent $500 during ownership on repair

I can't honestly say I watched this without having my stomach turned inside out. As a child I always saw other people who had these cars and their smiliar counterparts, whether older or newer and I always wanted one and further solidified my decison into getting one after researching the reliability and power these vehicles had. Not only did this program destroy so many pieces of automotive history, but most of these vehicles were in very good condition. This beautiful Caprice wagon (with an LT1 nonetheless) being just one of them. Now people who drive these older vehicles will have a harder time obtaining parts, and people who can't afford new cars will have a harder time finding reliable quality transportation.

i have a 1994 caprice that i bought from my grandmother.
has a LT1 and 56,000 miles. 1994 4,000 lb. car that gets 26 MPG stock. Don't think they make a car or truck that gets that kinda mpg for 2011. Lets only make it 1 term for that fucking asshole (Obama).
