only thing u can do is internet? nothing else? :S and what if u dont have internet? u wont even be able to use this computer. i dont see the point of it, if you want internet fast, just buy a smartphone or a tablet...
@Santuni3 The Chromebook is mainly for work on the go. Tablets and smartphones aren't optimized for working, due to the lack of a functional keyboard.
Probably gonna get some heat for saying this, but I like chrome os and my chromebook. For what i need, it can do, so i kinda don't see the problem here.
@Cinimod105 Man, seriously... I use my computer for much more things than browsing the web, mostly video editing, photoshop, music production... Fuckin everything (I don't play games lol)! This OS can't do that, you know it... I can browse the web with Google Chrome installed on Windows and I will have same thing as this 'Operating System'.
@wwwINNASERBIAcom Please read carefully NET as NETbook. You must compare Windows netbook vs chomebook (also a netbook), not PC or laptop. My chromebook boots up in 5 sec, I have NO security issues, I need NO maintenance - repair or change something in order to work. I edit videos, pictures and music on my chromebook, but only alternatives on the web, so no photoshop etc. Windows netbooks need more then 1 min to boot up and they lag very hard. If you will ever want a NETbook, buy a chromebook. ;)
@TheErnestotorres1977 A normal computer can't boot up in 3 seconds, neither do you have to worry about buying a new OS when it comes out, since you are entitled to the latest Chrome OS, unlike Windows or Mac.
@GirlCraft they are overpriced especially when you look at it on a hardware level but at least they can do more than the chromebook. not bashing the chromebook either but you have to be a pretty basic if not below average computer user to get any real functionality out of this.

I think this is Google's way of doing something similar with first crack at an innovative concept
@TheCK640 I just don't like the idea of an OS being based on a browser. And even Microsoft called Apple out on Siri saying their TellMe is the exact same thing. In a video comparison however, the Australian in the video who tested both of them found Siri to be a little better. And by a little better, I mean TellMe took "10 AM" for "Teen Anal" So that's pretty damn funny.

They know that this is the future (Yes everything is shifting to the internet) and many functions of the windows and alike are needed less and less every year. Its a great idea it is a little pricey though. Many users do 99% of tasks on the internet anyways they are simply appealing to those people by offering speed and simplicity.
It's so sad everybody is saying that it sucks. I mean sometimes you shouldn't tell the truth about such a big failure, such a horrible misunderstanding of client needs, such a waste of software and hardware. It just hurts the people who created that horrible horrible device.
Google OS?... FAIL! Really? How did this ever get approved? Palm's WebOS was better than this and it failed, too. Cloud storage is great, but putting EVERYTHING in the cloud, including your OS, apps & programs is stupid.
My advice, if you're interested in the cloud, & mobility, get a Kindle Fire. It's cheaper & better.
as a someone that uses a netbook more than a desktop, btw i'm an engineering student, i understand the idea of the chrome OS as a concept, because all you need from a portable laptop is a media player, browser, and word processor, since chrome is all 3 its a good idea to build a portable laptop around chrome. the bad idea is this cloud idea that requires you to access a website to use apps, if they just make it possible to download apps, and run them without the internet its going to be perfect
@DK12322 just use a standard media player. itunes doesn't even allow you to share your music files, so why would you want to use a program that doesn't give you control over your own music?
The test mule, isn't going to win any design awards. But just by the fact that its pissed people off their comfort zone by doing SOMETHING DIFFERENT - kinda means their doing something remarkable.
Think about the last time you took your laptop where there wasn't a wifi or a cell network....
This won't stop people from using real computers it's just a little commodity. Us nerds aren't going to buy it because us nerds like to write programs and use programs. You've got to have a real os to do that.
@micahwllmsn It's called Open Source, write your own.....you "nerd".....all it needs is hardware improvement and nothing else...If you can write your own program, I think you will be smart enough to write your own app for the Chrome browser
@CossackJoey It's not the chrome browser, it's the chrome OS running on a linux kernel. There is a big difference. You login to the browser and use internet apps. A $500 chromebook on bestbuy comes with 16GB of HD space. Obviously making chrome apps is a LITTLE different then making desktop software. Get your facts straight.
@micahwllmsn Yea it's a computer with the chrome browser, I know about the specs....stop trying to throw in useless facts to make yourself sound educated. Obviously if you make an app for the chrome browser you can use it on the ChromeOS....this isn't a difficult concept to comprehend...granted a program is different from an app....but you can make practically the same thing...you can make a website to host your program...just like Microsoft did to Office
@CossackJoey They aren't useless facts. If you knew what you were talking about you would know that. The internet sends information using H T T P which only sends html. That information can be rendered however the browser wants but you cannot make desktop like apps without something like flash, java, or silverlight (which are bulky, slow, and limited). Plus without an HD you don't have much to work with. Microsoft's online office uses an editable HTML document in an iframe.
@CossackJoey exactly, so if u use flash...because java isnt compatible with the chromebook, u should be fine....and u can even use html 5 so it can be available offline
No MS word or openoffice? This isn't much of an os. This is pretty much. A tablet that can't do anything. An ipad can browse get apps, and do anything really. If you jailbreak it even more. This can't do anything but get chrome apps and browse.
I wonder how would this work with proxy filtered internet? If the company you work in block google crowd then it's useless. I know school system is a;ready blocking google search and only allow yahoo search.
@LaveaFirmis whether or not the internet has been ruined, if what google wants to have happen with this happens, then the internet would simply no longer exist in it's current form.
@chickenfrend Google has made the internet a lot more rich.....It has so many sites and programs you probably don't know half of them....YouTube is there most successful site...that's right google made YouTube, so if you think Google will ruin the internet...think again, it's their entire company, I don't think they would ruin it.
@CossackJoey I use google all the time, they have done lots for the internet. but that doesn't mean they don't want to be it. they already are a good portion of the internet, at least for me. but if everything starts happening in the cloud, then all sites that aren't google or owned by another big company, would disappear. (and for the record, google didn't make youtube. they bought it from someone else.)
@chickenfrend yea yea they bought youtube just like they bought android....but people dont associate it like that, they have improved both of those products and making them better, so in actuallity they made them. but I don't see a problem with google owning the internet for the most part....They make better sites and products that are compatible with one another so you input 1 password and everything is logged in...way better
@CossackJoey well it's debatable if google improved youtube, and why does it matter what people associate it with? but are you really okay with google owning the whole internet? right now anyone who wants to can start a website and run a server, would you want to give up that freedom that the internet offers? besides i believe monopoly is illegal anyway...
@chickenfrend google will never "own" the internet. You originally stated that if everyone moved to the cloud the internet would be ruined. how is that? the cloud makes the internet your computer.....not seeing how that is ruining it? Weather or not google is taking over the internet is a different discussion...me personally I love google and all that they do...some people like Mac...whatever thats America and thats what drives innovation is competition.
@CossackJoey Okay, let's back up a little. what is the internet? a bunch of connected computers right? so what would happen if all the computers lost the hard drives and started storing things in the cloud? no more memory for servers on the computer, no more servers, no more websites.
@chickenfrend false, the server is in a different location....its not in your computer....u cant get rid of the server, but now it will be available anywhere rather than just that computer
@CossackJoey It depends on how you're running it, if you're paying someone else to run it for you, then it's in a different location. but you can also run a computer from a second computer in your house. but it doesn't matter if it's near you or far away, it's still run from a computer. where will the servers be if computers become cloud based?
@chickenfrend Where they have been...at Google....Im not saying cloud computing is going to take over and end the way the internet is. It is a good concept for some people...and the chromebook is not for everyone either, just if you want to browse the web....but with the help of the chrome store it is becoming more like a desktop with the apps you can download.
@CossackJoey Well cloud computing will probably never take over, but I still don't like the concept of the chromebook. I bought my computer for about $240 including a better graphics card, and i can actually download things and save things to my hard drive, and guess what, I also have google chrome! and i can download those chrome apps if i want to. If you're really willing to pay $500 for a web browser that stats up faster than a normal computer, then go ahead.
@chickenfrend The deal with the $500 price tag is that it has 3G data...which your computer does not...it has phenomenal hardware...which for $240 yours does not....and it also has a Solid State Drive which allows for super fast booting time, plus you have to purchase norton anti-virus and all that other jazz that comes with windows....plus the chromebook is updated like every 6 weeks...which windows is not and you pay for updates with windows.
@CossackJoey well the chrome book has a 1.66 ghz intel atom cpu, which is common among low power net books ( and is exactly the same cpu my old computer used to have, but i upgraded). My computer has 3.4 ghz pentium d dual core, significantly better than the chromebooks, so it's processor is not as good, and considering the size, I doubt it has anything more than integrated graphics, my computer has the ati radeon 5570with 1 gb of onboard memory and direct x 11 and shader model 5 support.
@chickenfrend Yea I definitely think they should improve on the cpu....the Cr-48 only came with a single-core atom processor....at least they bumped it to a dual core....did you upgrade all that on your computer? I have a hard time seeing a 3.4Ghz processor comes in a laptop for $240....unless you bought a used one....but I don't believe the chromebook even supports full screen HD video...which all these will probably be improved on the next chromebook...my guess
@CossackJoey I got a really good deal on ebay refurbished, but still you can get better hardware than the chrome books for pretty cheap. the chromebook is a netbook with no hdd, so i doubt it will ever have phenomenal hardware, you can get netbooks with the same specs that can actually download things for much less.
@CossackJoey as for the hard drive, solid state is fast, but there's only 16gb of it. and you can't download anything. you'd really give up the ability of downloading things for fast booting times? all the chrome book is is a browser, computers are more than just a browser.
@chickenfrend it wouldn't be ruined - it would simply evolve to meet our needs through more robust networks. but I hate the cloud LOL.. i am not looking forward to the day when everything is pretty much stored "off site" =-(
@chickenfrend It's OK. Many companies will always still build great PC parts (nVidia, AMD, Intel, ect.) and PC gamers will always need the high end PCs, so we should be fine. I can't imagine technology development stepping back. It's just Google's dumb idea.
some of these comments remind me that i shouldn't get an iPad. If I get this 3rd gen iPad why should I when in a couple of years they'll find something that will make it better...But if i do get the 3rd gen I'm just keeping it. I also have an iPhone 3. I would like an iPhone 4 just because of some apps only run on that. But other than that im good with what i got right now
have you guys ever heard of the ipad? it does all that, its lightweigh, it browse the internet, portable, longer battery life, and overall, video pics and a lot more than this thing is capable of doing.
@CHRIS90ANDES IPad, huh? So, how are those flash frames coming along for you? Oh and btw, can you please copy the pictures on this sd-card to your IPad? It's full! Oh no, is the IPad memory full to? Well I guess you could allways upgrade it with more memory! NOT!
@CHRIS90ANDES I can't see how it's relevant, since the Chrome OS won't compete with the IPad. Your comparison is wrong to begin with. But like I pointed out: You'll be able to wash flash frames, you'll be able to use USB-sticks and you'll be able to extend your memory. What parts did you not understand?
@bossebildoktor right again, though, as you may have noticed... its not THAT portable, i mean, yes its a laptop, but you know, you still have a lot to do just to bring it somewhere. where as the ipad is just touch and go. but i do see your point.
@bossebildoktor well apple doesn't make that crappy stuff. Yes they are expensive but hey, nothing is cheap in good quality tech. One thing Apple should learn is to come out with a product when they are fully satisfied. i saw in a post that Apple is working on the 3rd gen iPad, probably coming next year in early 2012. That's where a lot of customers get pissed. i'll check out the Android though, my friend has one and he seems satisfied with it.
@CHRIS90ANDES Is something different, in your Ipad you have the software installed on your machine, qith this chrome OS system, you don't use your hardware but the you only have an interface and all the calculation are done on the google servers
but seriously, the only reason I wouldn't buy this computer is because I haven't seen any free online programs that let one produce music, also I want to be able to play League of Legends on mah compy :D
@ZhyroHD That's a good question but presumably the answer from Google would be that you will be able to use a 3G/4G (depending on location) data connection. My concern with that though is quite simply the cost. I don't know where you are but here in the UK mobile data is expensive. The so called 'unlimited' packages are far from unlimited usually offering 1GB of downloads. I'm not quite sure Google thought this through.
People in google must be pretty high to come up with something like this... It is just utterly pointless!! I would much rather run android than this thing. Even windows 95 is both more powerful and advanced than the chrome os. So I ask myself, why?!?
this is just a fucking browswer !!! Mozilla the best !

Ok, so if I want to create a document, instead of launching MS word, which runs natively on x86, I now:
-Connect to the internet
-Log into a remote web server
-Download the HTML5 web page program that lets me make my document
-Let Chrome interpret HTML5 code through a sandbox
-Then upload the saved file to the cloud.
When, I could just have the application on my drive the entire time and run it natively, more securely, and more quickly. Nice Google.

@DK12322 just use a standard media player. itunes doesn't even allow you to share your music files, so why would you want to use a program that doesn't give you control over your own music?

This won't stop people from using real computers it's just a little commodity. Us nerds aren't going to buy it because us nerds like to write programs and use programs. You've got to have a real os to do that.
micahwllmsn 5 months ago
@micahwllmsn It's called Open Source, write your own.....you "nerd".....all it needs is hardware improvement and nothing else...If you can write your own program, I think you will be smart enough to write your own app for the Chrome browser
CossackJoey 5 months ago
@CossackJoey It's not the chrome browser, it's the chrome OS running on a linux kernel. There is a big difference. You login to the browser and use internet apps. A $500 chromebook on bestbuy comes with 16GB of HD space. Obviously making chrome apps is a LITTLE different then making desktop software. Get your facts straight.
micahwllmsn 5 months ago

Microsoft's online office uses an editable HTML document in an iframe.
micahwllmsn 5 months ago
@CossackJoey exactly, so if u use flash...because java isnt compatible with the chromebook, u should be fine....and u can even use html 5 so it can be available offline

No MS word or openoffice? This isn't much of an os. This is pretty much. A tablet that can't do anything. An ipad can browse get apps, and do anything really. If you jailbreak it even more. This can't do anything but get chrome apps and browse.

If everyone stops using real computers and starts doing everything in the cloud, the internet would eventually be ruined.
chickenfrend 5 months ago 28
@chickenfrend wait wait wait your telling me you think the internet hasnt already been ruined...?
LaveaFirmis 5 months ago
@LaveaFirmis whether or not the internet has been ruined, if what google wants to have happen with this happens, then the internet would simply no longer exist in it's current form.
chickenfrend 5 months ago
@chickenfrend Google has made the internet a lot more rich.....It has so many sites and programs you probably don't know half of them....YouTube is there most successful site...that's right google made YouTube, so if you think Google will ruin the internet...think again, it's their entire company, I don't think they would ruin it.
CossackJoey 5 months ago
@CossackJoey I use google all the time, they have done lots for the internet. but that doesn't mean they don't want to be it. they already are a good portion of the internet, at least for me. but if everything starts happening in the cloud, then all sites that aren't google or owned by another big company, would disappear. (and for the record, google didn't make youtube. they bought it from someone else.)
chickenfrend 5 months ago
@chickenfrend yea yea they bought youtube just like they bought android....but people dont associate it like that, they have improved both of those products and making them better, so in actuallity they made them. but I don't see a problem with google owning the internet for the most part....They make better sites and products that are compatible with one another so you input 1 password and everything is logged in...way better
CossackJoey 5 months ago
@CossackJoey well it's debatable if google improved youtube, and why does it matter what people associate it with? but are you really okay with google owning the whole internet? right now anyone who wants to can start a website and run a server, would you want to give up that freedom that the internet offers? besides i believe monopoly is illegal anyway...
chickenfrend 5 months ago
@chickenfrend google will never "own" the internet. You originally stated that if everyone moved to the cloud the internet would be ruined. how is that? the cloud makes the internet your computer.....not seeing how that is ruining it? Weather or not google is taking over the internet is a different discussion...me personally I love google and all that they do...some people like Mac...whatever thats America and thats what drives innovation is competition.
CossackJoey 5 months ago
@CossackJoey Okay, let's back up a little. what is the internet? a bunch of connected computers right? so what would happen if all the computers lost the hard drives and started storing things in the cloud? no more memory for servers on the computer, no more servers, no more websites.
chickenfrend 5 months ago
@chickenfrend false, the server is in a different location....its not in your computer....u cant get rid of the server, but now it will be available anywhere rather than just that computer
CossackJoey 5 months ago
@CossackJoey It depends on how you're running it, if you're paying someone else to run it for you, then it's in a different location. but you can also run a computer from a second computer in your house. but it doesn't matter if it's near you or far away, it's still run from a computer. where will the servers be if computers become cloud based?
chickenfrend 5 months ago
@chickenfrend Where they have been...at Google....Im not saying cloud computing is going to take over and end the way the internet is. It is a good concept for some people...and the chromebook is not for everyone either, just if you want to browse the web....but with the help of the chrome store it is becoming more like a desktop with the apps you can download.
CossackJoey 5 months ago
@CossackJoey Well cloud computing will probably never take over, but I still don't like the concept of the chromebook. I bought my computer for about $240 including a better graphics card, and i can actually download things and save things to my hard drive, and guess what, I also have google chrome! and i can download those chrome apps if i want to. If you're really willing to pay $500 for a web browser that stats up faster than a normal computer, then go ahead.
chickenfrend 5 months ago
@chickenfrend The deal with the $500 price tag is that it has 3G data...which your computer does not...it has phenomenal hardware...which for $240 yours does not....and it also has a Solid State Drive which allows for super fast booting time, plus you have to purchase norton anti-virus and all that other jazz that comes with windows....plus the chromebook is updated like every 6 weeks...which windows is not and you pay for updates with windows.
CossackJoey 5 months ago
@CossackJoey well the chrome book has a 1.66 ghz intel atom cpu, which is common among low power net books ( and is exactly the same cpu my old computer used to have, but i upgraded). My computer has 3.4 ghz pentium d dual core, significantly better than the chromebooks, so it's processor is not as good, and considering the size, I doubt it has anything more than integrated graphics, my computer has the ati radeon 5570with 1 gb of onboard memory and direct x 11 and shader model 5 support.
chickenfrend 5 months ago
@chickenfrend Yea I definitely think they should improve on the cpu....the Cr-48 only came with a single-core atom processor....at least they bumped it to a dual core....did you upgrade all that on your computer? I have a hard time seeing a 3.4Ghz processor comes in a laptop for $240....unless you bought a used one....but I don't believe the chromebook even supports full screen HD video...which all these will probably be improved on the next chromebook...my guess
CossackJoey 4 months ago
@CossackJoey I got a really good deal on ebay refurbished, but still you can get better hardware than the chrome books for pretty cheap. the chromebook is a netbook with no hdd, so i doubt it will ever have phenomenal hardware, you can get netbooks with the same specs that can actually download things for much less.
chickenfrend 4 months ago
@CossackJoey as for the hard drive, solid state is fast, but there's only 16gb of it. and you can't download anything. you'd really give up the ability of downloading things for fast booting times? all the chrome book is is a browser, computers are more than just a browser.
chickenfrend 5 months ago
@LaveaFirmis he's right. lets all go back to manually manages static websites or corny graphics. win post
micahwllmsn 5 months ago
@chickenfrend it wouldn't be ruined - it would simply evolve to meet our needs through more robust networks. but I hate the cloud LOL.. i am not looking forward to the day when everything is pretty much stored "off site" =-(
winwinningwon 4 months ago
@winwinningwon I think it would be ruined. But I don't know if it ever really will happen.

@chickenfrend It's OK. Many companies will always still build great PC parts (nVidia, AMD, Intel, ect.) and PC gamers will always need the high end PCs, so we should be fine. I can't imagine technology development stepping back. It's just Google's dumb idea.

CHRIS90ANDES 6 months ago
@CHRIS90ANDES IPad, huh? So, how are those flash frames coming along for you? Oh and btw, can you please copy the pictures on this sd-card to your IPad? It's full! Oh no, is the IPad memory full to? Well I guess you could allways upgrade it with more memory! NOT!
bossebildoktor 6 months ago
@bossebildoktor true that, but what other advantages does chrome os have that the ipad doesn't have?
CHRIS90ANDES 6 months ago
@CHRIS90ANDES I can't see how it's relevant, since the Chrome OS won't compete with the IPad. Your comparison is wrong to begin with. But like I pointed out: You'll be able to wash flash frames, you'll be able to use USB-sticks and you'll be able to extend your memory. What parts did you not understand?
bossebildoktor 6 months ago
@bossebildoktor right again, though, as you may have noticed... its not THAT portable, i mean, yes its a laptop, but you know, you still have a lot to do just to bring it somewhere. where as the ipad is just touch and go. but i do see your point.
CHRIS90ANDES 6 months ago
@CHRIS90ANDES My ultimate point is allways that Apple makes expensive crap.
Buy an Android tablet and feel the joy!
bossebildoktor 6 months ago
@bossebildoktor well apple doesn't make that crappy stuff. Yes they are expensive but hey, nothing is cheap in good quality tech. One thing Apple should learn is to come out with a product when they are fully satisfied. i saw in a post that Apple is working on the 3rd gen iPad, probably coming next year in early 2012. That's where a lot of customers get pissed. i'll check out the Android though, my friend has one and he seems satisfied with it.
CHRIS90ANDES 6 months ago
@CHRIS90ANDES Is something different, in your Ipad you have the software installed on your machine, qith this chrome OS system, you don't use your hardware but the you only have an interface and all the calculation are done on the google servers

How is it perfect for travel if you need Internet for the Operating system?
ZhyroHD 8 months ago
@ZhyroHD That's a good question but presumably the answer from Google would be that you will be able to use a 3G/4G (depending on location) data connection. My concern with that though is quite simply the cost. I don't know where you are but here in the UK mobile data is expensive. The so called 'unlimited' packages are far from unlimited usually offering 1GB of downloads. I'm not quite sure Google thought this through.
