@immortalbeauty17 Molly (the singer) wrote the song because she grew up in Ireland and she had a hard life. She wanted to be somewhere else. Then when she grew up she learned that the island helped her grow and helped her become who she is today.

Yes, you are correct. Molly's father left Ireland as a young man, came to the States, and fathered Molly sometime thereafter. He always complained when his granddaughter, Fiona, asked him about Ireland: something to the effect of, "Now, why do you want to hear about that old rock?" 'That rock' was how he always referred to Ireland, which he still loved even though he had sad memories there, and that was how Molly got the idea for the song.

Because things tend to change slightly in translation I believe the best translation for "an oilean seo mo h-eireann fein" is already in the song "This island, my Ireland," or this island is my Ireland, which refers to her heritage might actually be a better translation than "an Irish island of my own"

I've looked it up. oilean means island, mo means "my", h-eireann is like "Irish"/"Ireland" or something and fein is either herself or own. I'm not sure what "seo" means; I got cabaret or drama, which doesn't make much sense to me.

So roughly translated, it would be something like "an Irish island of my own"?
