If anybody is interested in playing Jazz Bass the book I highly recommend would be:
The Jazz Bass Book Techniques and Tradition by John Goldsby. You can buy it at Long And McQuade or St. Johns music or any music store that sells it. It is a Fantastic book and the Foreward By Ron Carter explains how wonderful this book is. And comming from Ron Carter being one of the most recorded Bassists and musicians of all time. It is worth 30 Bucks
Your technique is horrible and your tone is lame. We can all tell that you definetly dont have a teaching degree or as a matter of fact any kind of degree.
every chord is made up of three notes? where the hell did this guy learn music theory? Every triad is made up of three notes, and sympathetic octave or unison notes, but many chords have more than three notes... Eg. 7th 13th add9 etc...
Just learning bass here <--- I dont have an upright bass instrument but i do have a bass guitar. I know the fret names, but i dont know how to do a walk. Ive found these videos very helpful
@ette4eva A good walking bass line is 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 6th, 5th, 3rd, 1st. --- The notes in C for this would be: C, E, G, A, B (or Bflat if you are playing certain jazz scales), A, G, E, C.
Fingering for that would be: A2, D1, G0, G1, G4, G1, G0, D1, A2
pfffff I guess a monkey that's been trained on a bass for a week could have as much technique as this guy... He's wrong in so many ways I can't believe they call it exprertvillage..... I guess if you pay people peanuts, you get monkeys working for ya...
If you guys like the upright bass check out jazz musician Esperanza Spalding. She talks about her new album, Chamber Music Society in this video, Youtube.com/watch?v=uk-oJGAXSjA
@sionnachy yeah i know lol. if you really want to start easy and ACTUALLY do a walking bass line he should start in the key of Bb. there are lots of possibilities from there
I have been playing stand up bass for four years in the orchestra. If you want to learn go to your local music shop and buy a book that teaches you how. If your not retarded and know how to read you can learn bass. As a matter a fact. If the store has essential elements books try and get them. Get the 6th grade book for starters. Cause thats where i started. and just move up by grade once you finish the book. It teaches you everything you need to know about bass. I really recommend it.
Arpeggio refers to a way of playing a chord (or triad) - arpeggiated is one note at a time instead of at once. So a Triad can be arpeggiated, played as an arpeggio. You don't need 7ths, 9ths, 11ths or 13ths, although they can form tetrachords and the basis for substitutions.
Hey, lo1895 first of all an arpeggio is the root, 3rd, 5th, and then the octave. second of all, your an idiot. Dont bash on someone unless YOU have your shit strait.
An arpeggio is any scale played with the root, then the third then the fifth, But if I asked you to play a Bb-7 arpeggio you would spell the 7th, Bb Db F Ab. YOU need to get your shit strait.
God this is shit. Fucking hell, why bother? honestly.

This is bull shit . this guy has only been playing bass for about 2 months, do not follow this man.
andreasswarfeld 1 year ago
Almost, you typically would not omit the 5th from a half-diminished, fully diminished, or augmented chord. A perfect 5th is usually optional, though.
MatthewKaras 2 years ago
@MatthewKaras
You just omit the 7th from a half-diminished chord right?
BassGuitarGuy128 1 year ago
@BassGuitarGuy128
I think you could omit the 7th from a half- or fully- diminished chord safely.

you're wrong by the ways. if you are in the key of Bb it would be: Bb D F A....you spelled it in Bb minor
bacondgp 2 years ago
Actually, I just realized I was right. I did spell a Bb minor chord because thats what I said I was going to spell in my last comment.
rjbassmanatyahoocom 2 years ago
No, an arpeggio is made of 4 tones. Three notes spell a triad (which can be considered as a special kind of arpeggio). 2 notes an interval.
grrrroink 2 years ago
Yes he's talking about triad, and he may not know about 7th chords, but you can make an arpeggio out of any chord you like.
