In the old days, turntables where a universally understood common ground which your audience could connect with. WIth controllerism, the only real common ground is the software so turning your laptop sideways and letting everyone see it is a great idea and enables your crowd to connect with what's going on (for the geeks who need to know that is)

We need more humans like this on this doomed Erthh...Kudos to you, sir!
Your approach to music is fucking genius. I've learned more watching this two part video than I did in an entire semester of high school music theory.
Bravo! U remind me of 25 years ago. Back then only had turntables. We was as obsessed as you with organization and customizing. Keep it simple, know the key, and the bpm and the structure of the tunes. It was a paaiiin. But we kicked ass because of it. People as still talkin'. You cut right through the technology and get to and the point the groove. It takes a lot a thought to make it thoughtless...
I will really preciate any answer. Thank You. And Moldover, exellent vid! keep doing this kind of stuff! You are making something unusual: you are inspiring people! (sorry my English).
Hi all, please, ANYONE, I have a doubt about the key. How can I know in wich key the sample is? And then, once I know the key ( and pitch it, if necesary)... let's say the sample is on C, wich is beetwen B and G. The correct move to do is to go to another sample that has a B or G key? (because they have more notes in common?) what happens if I go to A or E for example, is it wrong? I have some musical formation, but I just can't get it very clear assosiating with this method.
I don't plan on being a controllerist however your video was really interesting and fun to watch. I learned a lot - I did not know you could do this much with a controller :)
1:04 - so what? it doesn't make it better. Its the music you're playing that counts - and where your heads at. Look at Daft Punk - 2 blokes standing there with helmets on - you dont even know its them, let alone what they're doing. But the shows are incredible.
It's about putting a visual element into the show, man. Daft Punk don't move around much because a) they're usually largely obscured by their equipment, and b) they have a massive lightshow.
If Daft Punk were playing in a local bar, close to the crowd, I guarantee they'd be moving and grooving.
Maybe - there's a fine line between 'moving and grooving' and 'making a dick of yourself' though. If you have to think about it, probably best avoid doing it.
it also effects the songs and how you are, if you're unknown DJ many people not groove, but if you play something that makes people wanna dance or it gets people to the dance floor they're freak out and groove. The DJ controls the dancefloor, if you can't that, then you aren't meant to be a DJ
While I'm into very different kinds of music to you, and I prefer to engineer music from scratch, I find your methodical approach to organising sounds and effects very insightful. I've learned a lot here so thanks for sharing your secrets.
damn, you just hit so many amazing ideas in such a short span. Lately i've been annoyed at how trapped by gridding and quantization in ableton and electronic music in general, but you totally just blew that out of the water. BRAVO
I think he's using setup implementing side-channnel compression or something like that. It's not a drag-n-drop thing that ships with Ableton, from what I can tell, but yes, I think it is using Ableton's stuff to do it.
I'm not using Ableton or Reason but i still get the general idea and i'm implementing these ideas into FL Studio and my KaossPad 3.
I imagine these ideas you post here can be generalized for more instruments and software like, connect MIDI-CC message to controller or switch, and then point the instrument, program or plugin.
But i guess it's up to us enthousiasts to figure that out and share it in turn.
Anywho ;-) keep it up. Your stuff works wonders for upcoming talent
Been watching these videos for a while now while trying to teach myself the black art of Latptop DJ and it just hit me how brilliant "Smart-mixing" is.
You need to get on copyrighting that or something.
I've not heard your sets but what I've heard from some ableton dj/producer mash ups is that having all that sonic control on hands makes it easy to forget the balance of things that's built into songs in mixing/arranging so there's a risk of having too much going on for long enough to get fatiguing and I hope aspiring dj-producer types would keep this in mind.
It's a new generation man.. high density.. glitched.. The world is overdue for a musical revolution.. This kind of stuff taps into that in the young mind.
Maybe. I believe some of the harsh/glitchy sounds are just a passing trend as the software algorithms get better and start to utilize multiple cores available.
I would recommend paying close attention to sound of the effects used and how the compressor works with them. I haven't got demos up but with MiniMonsta as effect and SSLChannel with CLA Bass preset and a bunch of stereo plugins to fine tune the stereo image it's possible to sound very close to some good records with no effort at all.
mr moldova, you are officially my hero. love my turntables but christ cue my first midi purchase. I salute you and what admirable approach work for you to have arrived at this juncture. outstanding. many thanks 4showing the thousands of viewers myself included whats is going on. this is clearly the way forward.
My one bit of confusion is how Moldover says he pitch shifts everything to a major key. Then he explains that he keeps major keys in the primary colors and then minor keys in the darker primary colors. Why would there be minor keys if everything is pitch shifted to major keys? Either way this is impressive.
It's not that he shifts all key to mayor keys but to: C G D A E B,
the relative minors are still there.
Ex: Gminor = Bb mayor, wich he moves to B. There the original G minor wil be transformed into Ab minor (or G# minor)= minor relatove of B. As I understand what he says.
mannnnn. You deserve to be huge, my friend. Very few live techno artists want to go to these lengths to maximize the flexibility and improv-ability to their shows. I am inspired to see that you have the tenacity to do ALL your homework for live PA'ing. Hopefully I'll get to see you play someday. If u want, please check out my live setup. THX. = )
Hi, I really admire your organization and I want to thank you for explaining your method, it is very clear and very interesting, I can understand how much fun you have with your setup. I'm starting to figure my needs and building my own method (I'm more a producer) and I hope I can reach such a level of organization, it's really nice.
ver nice also. but how many ram is your ableton using? in my set i have 20 songs loaded and some effects and it has between 400 and 600mb ram. also i cant play more than 5 samples, otherwise the sound stuck:(
you ae the very first man generous enough to tell and communicate your digital music techniques
y spent a lot of time trying to figure out how aaron spectre (for example)does his mashups, software and hardware talking. I couldn´t find his methods and other breakcore players so I invented my own technique, but still had some problems.

You could probably put the minor keys against their relative major, this way you'll be using the same scale although off a different root note. Might not suit, but might work better for you.
To me A minor playing over A Major is much worse (has a semi-tone clashing) then A minor playing over C Major.
It really is quite a good system, but you seem to have this knack for picking the cheesiest and most cliche samples. The excentuated hand movements are a bit over the top too, makes you look like a poser. Work on these two things and you will have a lot less comments from haters on your videos.
Accentuated body movements are all a part of performance. They look cheesy when you're 1:1 but in a big crowd from a distance it looks perfectly natural. Actors, Dancers, etc all do this on stage. But yes I agree that close up, it seems a bit over the top. And for the cheesy samples, I agree but I suspect it's just him being goofy for the video. ;)
It's really not my style of music but i have to give you mad respect. You not only have a firm grasp of the technology and how to mold it to your needs, but also appear to have a solid background in music theory and studio recording & live performance principals.
I think it's good you mention the bit on interacting with the crowd so they can see you working because i've been (dragged) to shows and couldn't tell if it was a live performance or simply a recording because they hid behind laptops.

i have no idea of what a key is. i mix normally, dual cd players and a 2 channel mixer. now that im moving into ableton i see that you can be much more creative.
ppl just hate digital djs just coz they use the digital aids not for being creative, instead the use all sort of aids just to minimize the dj work.. and thats pure shit!
but i see that ur creative, and of course you cant make a live production with vinyls.
thx 4 showing us what you do, it inspires me to do a lot of things
saw your show at supreme trading. it was off the hook. i must say the rest of the night kind of dissapointed me but you held it down for sure. is the last song you played that night on recording anywhere. it was so dope

i have no idea of what a key is. i mix normally, dual cd players and a 2 channel mixer. now that im moving into ableton i see that you can be much more creative.
ppl just hate digital djs just coz they use the digital aids not for being creative, instead the use all sort of aids just to minimize the dj work.. and thats pure shit!
but i see that ur creative, and of course you cant make a live production with vinyls.
thx 4 showing us what you do, it inspires me to do a lot of things

saw your show at supreme trading. it was off the hook. i must say the rest of the night kind of dissapointed me but you held it down for sure. is the last song you played that night on recording anywhere. it was so dope

That's awesome man!
So how should go about trying to implement that super mixer technique in Traktor, Reason, Ableton?
Is it a plug in?
