  • A song for the 99%.

  • Top song

  • To the heroes and heroines struggling against the the numbskulls in Egypt and Syriya. YOU WILL WIN.

You are many. THEY are few!

  • The tube was so great - Jools still going stronger than ever of course. Icicle Works - sheer genius

  • don't you miss The Tube ?, i seem to remember it started about early teatime about 530pm and went on till 7pm or something, makes later with jools holland look positively hoity toity.

  • brilliant stuff

  • i'm in a band, bass player, 42 now, not a great voice, but this was one of the songs i could belt out like a good un. luve this song thanks for posting.

  • Mcnabb is guts and soul

  • Agrees with Loomjoove, saw these guys at least 10 times in the 80's, and every show was an Elevated Party, and man, COULD Ian play back then!!!!. still have Black and White photos i took during an 80s gig in Blackburn Polytech....... Never understood why the Icicles were not huge, they could write pop songs (and did!) that where sooo catchy and tuneful, as well as rock the house down with the best of em. Cudo's to Ian for not selling out and doing what he dreamed of!.

  • The Icicles were my first gig... unforgettable.

  • Hope McNabb gets him back for the Icicle Works reunion tour next April.....not exactly busy with Oasis is he, lol. Superb drummer....

  • chris was spotted last playing for oasis. the best drummer of a generation in my view.

  • Boss band, used to practice above our local offy in Bebington.

  • My all time favourite record. I remember saying hi to them when they were getting on the stae at Huddersfield Poly about 1984 i think. A brilliant band.

  • The sound of Liverpool. Brilliant.

  • Savw them live at Fat Sams in Dundee Scotland, 1990. Great and underated band. Many great songs!

  • Ian McNabb (yum), Ian McCulloch, Ian Prowse, Ian Astbury, Ian Curtis, Ian Brown...damn! What is IT with Ians and great music?!!

  • Brilliant song- wish I had seen em!!!

  • Does anyone know what happened to (Big) Chris the bassist?

  • @Criddington I went to a mcnabb solo acoustic show recently(july 2011),a brilliant gig.

When getting a cd signed afterward I asked him if there were anymore icies gigs planned, and He said ''yes, and with the original line up''.I asked what Chris Layhe was doing and Ian said he was a teacher in Stockport

  • @thepurplecockney That's great to hear - I missed on the gigs in April because it was during my university term time, so hopefully I can catch them soon, though I've seen Ian live several times and loved it!

  • heavy

  • The drummer from this band is amazing!!! Anyone know his name and what he did after.. BTW: Icicle works is highly underrated..

  • chris sharrock,he joined the la's,the lightning seeds, world party, robbie williams band and is now drummer with oasis

  • @weirandstubbs My dad toured with them for a month or two in the eighties and he said he's the best drummer who ever lived lol

  • Chris Sharrock, latterly Oasis, before that and in no particular order: Robbie Williams, World Party, The La's, Del Amitri (on the album Twisted), The Lightning Seeds. To name but a few, a top drummer!

  • The drummer is Chris Sharrock. The first album is one of my favorites of all time. Sharrock's creative drum work was essential to it. The first album was more dreamy and psychedelic. Then they turned into a standard rock band with a few good songs here and there. Understanding Jane is one of them. I don't like the video. Cognitive dissonance--I can't reconcile beach party with Icicle Works.

  • @SweetSweetWaldo name of album?

  • @sophasoph "The Small Price of a Bicycle"

  • i used to be mates with chriss sister.i remember her telling me aout them when they first started out.seen them many times and this is still my favourite track.cheers for posting.

  • I saw this band so many times throughout the 80s. They were astonishing live - a complete sweat drenched celebration every time! They would begin with Hollow Horse, which, for a lesser band, would be peaking too early, but they would produce belter after belter. McNabb must be one of the most neglected pop geniuses of that or any other era. I think they were a little out of time and would have been leading lights of Brit-pop a decade later.

  • awesome band , im only 19 but i love this band . my mum introduced me to em.

  • everytime i hear their music i still get goosebumps all over......

  • Still excellent after all these years: He still sounds like Scott Walker!

    Praise, indeed

  • Fantastic, great songwriter, great performer,

  • Remember this when it was broadcast - Great post!! :)

  • 'We'll be as we are, when all the fools who doubt us fade away...'

That's a more meaningful and affecting lyric than 90% of today's bands could manage throughout their entire career. Boots we salute you!

  • Great memories. One of the most under rated bands of the 80s.

  • definately the most underated band of the 80's, this is one of the best songs ever written, i wish ide written the bugger..

  • Comment removed

  • Still an amazing song, thanks

  • Brilliant

  • IW were the first band i ever saw live ..back in Feb 87 at Brum Powerhouse...quality.. and Chris Sharrock is still the best drummer i ever seen and i have seen the best bands in the world

  • Amen to that - watching Chris Sharrock was one of the joys of seeing them live. That, and that beautiful Moog string synth sound... I must have seen them live about 30 times back in the 80's. And it's been years since I've heard this, yet I still know every single word.......

  • Excellent band. Saw then live three times and has to be the best gifs I have ever attended.

  • One of the best songs made in the 80's!

80's with a sixties feel. Very good!

  • The original 12" version is the best song of the '80s, bar none. Superb!

  • I've got this 12" vinyl record as well. It only has Nirvana on the B-side. Where's the other track The Atheist.? LOL

  • Pure genius, am glad to say saw this band 3 times, one of the most underated bands of the 80's deserved global sucess, along with the church

  • The one band that I can truly say captivated everything that was great about the 80's. Will love to the day I die !

  • I got chills. That is fantastic.

  • "WHEN ALL THE FOOLS WHO DOUBT US FADE AWAY" yeaaaaaaaaah

  • Wow takes me back - what a brilliant band the Icicle Works were. Their shows were always brilliant - proper musicians. "When vanity has played a part in every leader's downfall" still rings true today eh Tony?

  • They seemed somehow to be overlooked by the 'Liverpool Explodes' phenomenon of the early 80'S for some reason but the music still stands up there. McNabb has to be one of the most underrated British songwriters?

  • I totally agree with you!

I mean I am only 15 and only know them through my Dad. But I think Ian McNabb is amazing to be honest. :D

  • Amazing stuff takes you back

  • I can't agree with the last assessment, although I respect all opinions. However, this is a brilliant song.

  • The 1980s were the best decade for music and movies!

  • Justin you hit it on the head. The only music genres that has kept quility are the bands from the 80's still writing. And Metal(as a whole). The "top 40" is absolute GARBAGE with almost no exception. The over produced crap is horrible. If you dont believe it go see some of the current acts live, its like a greek tragedy.

  • What a great song,McNabb is one of the best singer/songwriters Britain has ever had.

  • first time i heard this song and i have to admit that was a damn good song the icicle works has a knack for really making you feel things in there work unlike the pure crap that is on the air today it really is a shame to see what radio has come to today people can call it what they will but it is not freakin music it is just cursing threats and violence on todays radio i wish i was old enough to understand the music in the 80s

  • One of my favorite bands in the '80s. Ian's voice here is at its best!

  • great voice of the 80's!! i wish i can sing like you man.

  • ...i love reminiscing my wxb102 days, wow with this song, b4 goin to school, it gives me a dramatic cool change in my school day's attitude and my perspective in studying...this song was great!!!.....genius in the making!!! thx for posting it.

  • The Icicle Works-- best band of the '8o's, my teen years, and their music still holds up today...Boots is a freakin' genius songwriter, and this band was just too good to ever get massly popular...glad to know there are others out there who appreciate this timeless music...totally transcends the 'new wave' era from which it came from...try listening to Culture Club or Flock of Seagulls now...

  • I hear you brother. I reckon we're about the same age and the Works are my favourite band (of any era). I saw them live 4 times in the 80s and I've seen McNabb live about a dozen times in the last couple of years. Understanding Jane, Birds Fly, Hollow Horse, Evangeline, When it all Comes Down, Starry Blue Eyed Wonder.... Timeless classics all from one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation

  • Goat boy-- you must be well, not American. I live on the west coast US in Oregon and, unfortunately, have never seen McNabb live...maybe if I finally get over to Europe someday...

  • I'm from Merseyside and McNabb gigs here on a regular basis. Drop me a line if you're ever planning a trip to Liverpool and I'll make sure you coincide with a gig :-)

  • I'm from Merseyside and McNabb still gigs here regularly. If you're ever planning a trip over the pond drop me a line and i'll make sure you coincide with a McNabb concert :-)

  • You bet yer boots I will....

  • mcnabbmcnabbmcnabbmcnabb= yes?.

  • What an absolutely brilliant song ... a socialist anthem if ever there was one ... 'We'll be where we are, when all the fools who doubt us fade away' .. spot one .. Fucking awesome'... No Surrender !

  • Awesome.

Roll on the Xmas Gig - Yay!

  • Man, Ian sure can sing! What an incredibly awesome song!

  • Funny you say that, the drummer is Robbie Williams' now.

  • Quality will out, let alone honesty! Ian is the man!

  • anyone hear ian mcnabb's 1st solo release? some great tunes on that.

  • There is no substitute for soul...wisen up and fly straight theres a shape on the horizon..Mcnabb a possesor of in abundance

  • wow! we'll be as we are..fabulous

  • when all the fools who doubt us fade away go ian go ian

  • Chris S sold me my first drum kit - and Chris L helped us do a demo once - great to see this - Small Price of A Bicycle is a lost Classic Album - needs to be rediscovered!!

  • great band. Chris sharrock drumed for my dads first band the CHERRY BOYS

  • Rushed home after seeing Orwell's 1984 at the movies to catch this. Only seen them once in '85, at Maestros in Glasgow. Great song from a great band. Thanks for popping this on.

  • Pallah, you're a god. We'll be as we are we are....nod to Da Lama as well. ...I ridicule myself for all thoe symbols.... these lyrics are positively the very best ever. Shame he couldn't get Christina Aguilera to sing them- might have made some money. Love ya.

  • my all time favourite song ever. It should have been a big hit but i,m sort of glad it wasn,t. cheers for posting. if you,ve got any more put them on.

  • Wooo Hooo!!! Remember this and The Art Of Noise joke with the comb and Greaseproof paper..Thanks Mucho!!

  • May sound like a dumb question but what year was this from?

  • Hollow Horse was released in September 1984. This show was recorded some weeks after.
