Agrees with Loomjoove, saw these guys at least 10 times in the 80's, and every show was an Elevated Party, and man, COULD Ian play back then!!!!. still have Black and White photos i took during an 80s gig in Blackburn Polytech....... Never understood why the Icicles were not huge, they could write pop songs (and did!) that where sooo catchy and tuneful, as well as rock the house down with the best of em. Cudo's to Ian for not selling out and doing what he dreamed of!.

My all time favourite record. I remember saying hi to them when they were getting on the stae at Huddersfield Poly about 1984 i think. A brilliant band.
It was hard for these guys because Guitar Bands weren't exactly "in" during the mid eighties. Bands like Joy Division had fashioned a "detatched" sound that the Britpop bands finally blew away in the 90's. But like wine the good stuff only gets better whilst the crap is quickly forgotten.
and the Icicle Works produced some great vintages!
@Criddington I went to a mcnabb solo acoustic show recently(july 2011),a brilliant gig.
When getting a cd signed afterward I asked him if there were anymore icies gigs planned, and He said ''yes, and with the original line up''.I asked what Chris Layhe was doing and Ian said he was a teacher in Stockport
@thepurplecockney That's great to hear - I missed on the gigs in April because it was during my university term time, so hopefully I can catch them soon, though I've seen Ian live several times and loved it!
Chris Sharrock, latterly Oasis, before that and in no particular order: Robbie Williams, World Party, The La's, Del Amitri (on the album Twisted), The Lightning Seeds. To name but a few, a top drummer!
The drummer is Chris Sharrock. The first album is one of my favorites of all time. Sharrock's creative drum work was essential to it. The first album was more dreamy and psychedelic. Then they turned into a standard rock band with a few good songs here and there. Understanding Jane is one of them. I don't like the video. Cognitive dissonance--I can't reconcile beach party with Icicle Works.
i used to be mates with chriss sister.i remember her telling me aout them when they first started out.seen them many times and this is still my favourite track.cheers for posting.
I saw this band so many times throughout the 80s. They were astonishing live - a complete sweat drenched celebration every time! They would begin with Hollow Horse, which, for a lesser band, would be peaking too early, but they would produce belter after belter. McNabb must be one of the most neglected pop geniuses of that or any other era. I think they were a little out of time and would have been leading lights of Brit-pop a decade later.
IW were the first band i ever saw live ..back in Feb 87 at Brum Powerhouse...quality.. and Chris Sharrock is still the best drummer i ever seen and i have seen the best bands in the world
Amen to that - watching Chris Sharrock was one of the joys of seeing them live. That, and that beautiful Moog string synth sound... I must have seen them live about 30 times back in the 80's. And it's been years since I've heard this, yet I still know every single word.......
Wow takes me back - what a brilliant band the Icicle Works were. Their shows were always brilliant - proper musicians. "When vanity has played a part in every leader's downfall" still rings true today eh Tony?
They seemed somehow to be overlooked by the 'Liverpool Explodes' phenomenon of the early 80'S for some reason but the music still stands up there. McNabb has to be one of the most underrated British songwriters?
Justin you hit it on the head. The only music genres that has kept quility are the bands from the 80's still writing. And Metal(as a whole). The "top 40" is absolute GARBAGE with almost no exception. The over produced crap is horrible. If you dont believe it go see some of the current acts live, its like a greek tragedy.
first time i heard this song and i have to admit that was a damn good song the icicle works has a knack for really making you feel things in there work unlike the pure crap that is on the air today it really is a shame to see what radio has come to today people can call it what they will but it is not freakin music it is just cursing threats and violence on todays radio i wish i was old enough to understand the music in the 80s
...i love reminiscing my wxb102 days, wow with this song, b4 goin to school, it gives me a dramatic cool change in my school day's attitude and my perspective in studying...this song was great!!!.....genius in the making!!! thx for posting it.
The Icicle Works-- best band of the '8o's, my teen years, and their music still holds up today...Boots is a freakin' genius songwriter, and this band was just too good to ever get massly popular...glad to know there are others out there who appreciate this timeless music...totally transcends the 'new wave' era from which it came from...try listening to Culture Club or Flock of Seagulls now...
I hear you brother. I reckon we're about the same age and the Works are my favourite band (of any era). I saw them live 4 times in the 80s and I've seen McNabb live about a dozen times in the last couple of years. Understanding Jane, Birds Fly, Hollow Horse, Evangeline, When it all Comes Down, Starry Blue Eyed Wonder.... Timeless classics all from one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation
Goat boy-- you must be well, not American. I live on the west coast US in Oregon and, unfortunately, have never seen McNabb live...maybe if I finally get over to Europe someday...
I'm from Merseyside and McNabb gigs here on a regular basis. Drop me a line if you're ever planning a trip to Liverpool and I'll make sure you coincide with a gig :-)
I'm from Merseyside and McNabb still gigs here regularly. If you're ever planning a trip over the pond drop me a line and i'll make sure you coincide with a McNabb concert :-)
What an absolutely brilliant song ... a socialist anthem if ever there was one ... 'We'll be where we are, when all the fools who doubt us fade away' .. spot one .. Fucking awesome'... No Surrender !

Rushed home after seeing Orwell's 1984 at the movies to catch this. Only seen them once in '85, at Maestros in Glasgow. Great song from a great band. Thanks for popping this on.
Pallah, you're a god. We'll be as we are we are....nod to Da Lama as well. ...I ridicule myself for all thoe symbols.... these lyrics are positively the very best ever. Shame he couldn't get Christina Aguilera to sing them- might have made some money. Love ya.
