  • Dennis was the ultimate voice of styx, The other guys were just lucky to to hook up with dennis, to be even relevant. They know it too... they would be irrelevant without dennis. Dennis is and always will be STIX!!!!!

  • Styx cannot harmonize as well today without Dennis Deyoung. These 3 voices are the signature sound of Styx. Does anyone agree?

  • Wow what a long time ago that was

  • I was a five or six year old kid when styx recorded their greatest hits album and it arrived in stores and they had done this TV appearence

  • How did these guys get reduced to Regis and Kathy? Pretty bad when Justin Beiber is kicking ass. Thanks Disney, you have no taste.

  • I remember this show when it aired and I am glad I got the see styx with ddy in it a few motnhs later. Never got that chance when they were together and playing in the 70s - 80's. Was a great show.

  • this is really cool and I'm a huge fan of the Original styx line up

  • From September 07, 1995 on Regis and Kathy Lee!

  • A good performance by the guys, but I didn't much care for the honky-tonk twist they gave to the songs. Without the synthesizers and electric guitars, it just didn't have the hard rock edge that the original recordings had.

  • Dennis came down with a terrible neurological illness. He could not tour for a few years, so the band replaced him.

  • THIS IS FU$%ING GREAT! THX

  • No Panozzo Brothers?

  • @tjrtherocksponge : "Paaaaa-radise! Can it be aaaaal-l-l-l I heard it was, I close my eyes, and maaaaybe I'm aaaalready the-e-e-e-e-e-e-r-r-r-e!" Then the blazing guitar solo. Whew. ;])

  • I'm sick of going to videos and seeing people whine about Dennis not being in the band anymore. Face facts, Dennis is gone, Gowan is here. Some fans actually prefer Gowan, such as myself. If you miss Dennis so much, just watch old videos of the Styx line-up you prefer > __ > I miss Glen Burtnik, but I don't flame Ricky Philips because of it...

  • @sasoritol I've been a MAJOR Styx fan all my life, and I'm sorry sir, (or madam), but you're WRONG! Dennis was the ORIGINAL FOUNDER of that band in the early days. Without him, there would be NO STYX! Without him, Gowan and Tommy would still be playing in dives and bowling allies! Dennis GAVE THEM BOTH their BIG BREAK! It is not the same band without Dennis and John and Chuck Panozzo, and I don't give a damn what you or anyone else says!

  • @smalltownman73 That's fine! >_> thanks for attacking me when I was making a point. And I'm very much a girl, dickweed. I prefer Dennis now after hearing Lawrence screw up his songs on Regeneration. Stil, thank you VERY much for attacking me for stating an opinion. It's people like you that make me ashamed to say Styx is my fave band. "DENNIS IS STYX RAH" that may be true, but Tommy and JY both had hits as well. Personally, JY is my favorite. So stop worrying about two month old comments e_e

  • I miss Dennis, you are correct, HE is the heart and soul of Styx.

  • STYX is still around...but the heart and soul of this band are gone when Dennis DeYoung is not with the group anymore. The STYX that you see nowadays is without HEART and SOUL! Can you guys name any hit songs from Styx after DDY left?

  • THIS is what Sytx was all about. The three of them, singing in harmony.

  • cool post- there's nothing like jy, dennis, and tommy all singing together-

  • REGIS requests "Too Much Time on My Hands"! Now, THAT'S cool!! This is uplifing and hilarious! ;])

  • This band was the first band I ever saw at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island in 1980...The Good Rats were the opening act........very exciting since I was only 16 years old

  • @scallly64 : I saw Styx live in L.A. during the "Mister Roboto" tour in 1983(I'm old). Tommy Shaw walked down the main isle playing his wireless electric guitar....it was like being in a scene in a movie about rock music. Memorable, to say the least. ;])

  • @buzzclick500 awesome! I still have my ticket stub..The show was only $9.50 haha times have changed!

  • @scallly64 : My wallet was so full of ticket stubs, it looked like a brown baseball! I wish we'd had scanners and information retrieval systems back then, I wish, I wish, I wish! The average price of the concerts I attended in the '80's was forty dollars, and more than worth it. ;])

  • @buzzclick500- wait a minute....... Wireless electric guitar?? You mean he was playing an electric guitar without it being plugged into an amp??? Or was it actually wireless?? Because if it was, that sounds like a modern piece of equipment.

  • @BaneOfXistence4 : Well, that's what I remember. We were about 50 rows back at the L.A. Forum, and he came down the center isle playing a guitar that was just...there...how long is the longest guitar cord? I kept trying to get my girlfriend to touch him--what an idiot, eh? ;])

  • What about John and Paul?

  • What on earth are you talking about? When I said "come out" I meant walking out on stage, not coming out as gay.

  • wow I wish I was at the filming of this TV show

  • Definitely! It is because the youthful generation, which most music is aimed at, has a terrible value system and is an even worse of a judge of what is good music. Therefore, most music will be, for practical reasons, compelled to cater to these tastes, to conform to what these people want to hear. And the result is Taylor Swift, Chris Brown, and etc. (Nothing against them, personally.)

And Styx and Queen and John Lennon was truly amazing at piano, guitar, and singing.

    -the hard truth.

  • Did they really have to come out to "Show Me the Way?" With Tommy there wouldn't it be more appropriate to come out to a song he sang?

  • Minus a particular set of fraternal twins. RIP John Panozzo

  • I meant james....

  • I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEIR PROBLEMS WERE BUT, THEY WERE AN AWESOME BAND!!!

  • Saw Styx 2 days ago at Pine Knob - they still kicked it. Tommy and Dennis can still bring it Hard!

    Great show.

  • @tlaxa I didnt know Dennis was back with Styx....lmao!

  • @tlaxa Dennis has not been in styx for over 10 years!

  • I have been hooked on Styx since the mid 70's - and saw the Grand Illusion Tour at the Mississippi Valley Fair, 1978 ?? I"m getting old, don't remember when it was... GREAT music. nothing like it any more.

  • i notice a lot of older bands front men haven't lost their voices. cool!!

  • I guess i play on back of the beat because to me he got the crowd clapping offtime for renagade

  • best rock band evr

  • Their vocals are so incredible - in tune!! (NO AUTOTUNE BACK THEN)

    FABULOUS!!!

  • JY's mic was a little too loud... but awesome to see them together.

  • i miss kathy lee

  • i used to think a band lucky to have one good singer.. then i went to a styx concert!

  • go to an eagles one then

  • 6:55 Tommy Shaws expression when giving the lyrics is klassik !

  • ha that's because Tommy absolutely detested "Babe"

  • "ha" ?? no the expession im speaking of is the one he gives the lyrics to Dennis at the start of the song.

  • Cool video Tommy Shaw is the best

  • hi all to those who LOVE Styx !! I have been a fan since1975 and i still love every song i hear today. I'm glad there are a new generation out there loving it too esp. since almost all were not born for a long time when the songs were released. You know the ultimute rock band , pass it on to your kids!!!!

  • Shaw kicked ass!!

  • Eric Cartman does the best version of Come Sail Away

  • Well duh metal head

  • I'm not the hugest Styx fan, but this video left me wanting more. They sound amazing live!

  • This must have been when John was sick.

  • Oh man those three sound so good together.

  • One last comment on the Dennis/Styx issue. I know of DDY hit's since STYX. Are there any additional STYX hits? If so, I'm unfamiliar.

  • I don't think I could see Styx without Dennis.

  • Styx without DeYoung is much more fun and a lot more rocking. GOWAN and SHAW are amazing. And we can't forget the JY either. They are better now than they ever were. And Sucherman on the drums is a maniac. He did things in his drum solo that I did not know was possible

  • Well, my son and I are going to see them in Toledo at the end of the month. Hopefully we won't get cheated as they are touring with REO and 38 Special

  • what is the song playing when they walk out???

  • Show Me The Way

  • Styx is amazing! It is a shame there are no longer bands like this!

  • I agree. And its because nobody can put guitar and piano and wonderful singing together as well as the older rock bands can.

New bands think that if its not heavy metal or rap, then its not good and thats just bull crap. And they have no talent.

  • lol im 16 and I agree!

  • haha I am 15.

  • I think it's safe to say Styx would never have been as successful as they were without the talents of all three of these guys. Awesome vocals.

  • All I can say is SHAM-WOW! Personally, I think Styx is a better band with Dennis in it. I actually didn't think there was anything wrong with stating facts about band history.

  • Yes, I agree with you fdgowin STYX is a better band with Dennis in it. Sorry, but Gowan (eventhough I really like him) just doesn't do it like Dennis did. Now in all fairness to STYX I can't think of anyone better than Larry Gowan to replace Dennis.

  • Boy they really sped up the pace on renegade.. I remember it being a bit slower..

  • bad morning TV, show me the way ! this is hillarious

  • Regis and Kathy Lee = STicks

Zeppelin=02 arena sold out about a hundred times

Tommy Bradford is hillarious, but didn't perform on the original (doin the Eight is Enough thing)

  • It is clear on this video the tension in the group with Dennis calling out Tommy twice in the video-trying to distance himself- lot of jealousy. Styx wanted to rock and Dennis did not- All are very talented but just look at some of the other Styx videos with Dennis-the damn man dressed like a mime- different directions

  • Its a shame they could not resolve the issues they had.

  • Even in this video there seems to be tension between TS and DDY. He makes it a point to say that tommy wasnt on the first album and that he is not from chi-town.

  • man...I don't see it that way...He wanted to give Tommy his due AND note that he was from another city...maybe because it was a FACT and maybe Tommy is proud of HIS city too? always two points of view...like maybe...the other guys are always going to be jealous of Dennis for his prolific talent, ability to have lead the band to great success, his ability to remain happily married for 38 years...maybe they just can't handle seeing such success so near to their relative mediocrity

  • I have met DDY and his wife and they were both very nice however I don't think his marriage has much to with Tommy's happiness and rock and roll. They are all great musicians just different directions. Not going to find a bigger rock star loving what he does 200 nights a year than Tommy Shaw.

  • @lehm0117 I raped Tommy in prison. He was my bitch and had to clean my cell for me daily.

  • @biped19 true. I wish they could get past the egos. It seems to me it was mostly Dennis but who knows, I still love Styx

  • @biped19

The same with Journey. What a shame.

  • Totally. I actually attribute some of the blame in the early years of the break ups to the managers etc. They ere too buys kissing their client's ass, when they just needed to level with them, especially Journey. There was no excuse for Journey to break up again after a monster comeback with their best album "Trial by Fire." Steve was injured, but the managers should have encouraged Steve to do a limited tour and announce a "brief hiatus" so Perry could decide what to do about his hip.

  • @biped19 Steve broke his hip..He could not have done a "limited" tour. He needed hip replacement immediatly. He asked the band to postpone the tour until he was better,,they declined.

  • @Rayman3424

VH1 behind the music SP: "I was hiking and had an incredible pain. . ." He didn't "break his hip" he had some other issue that gave him great pain. Still, a-hole, he could have taken some meds and a doctor along or something to tours a few big cities etc. gets your facts straight trouser stain.

  • @biped19 "Before the Trial By Fire tour could begin, Perry suffered a hip injury while hiking in Hawaii and was unable to perform. Perry was diagnosed with a degenerative bone condition and a hip replacement would be required"....So "taken meds" would not have been enough..But you are a tough guy, You were able to call someone a name on the internet..What a Man!

  • Great songs and equally great harmonies. These song wil be listened to for another 100 years. Love to see them in Concert. Grew up listening to them and what amazing memories come back when I hear styx.

  • man those songs were wicked sick! 5 stars on this one, man

  • Thanks for sharing this video. Its great since I quit watching TV a long time ago.

But I'll watch anything if its worth watching like this show with STYX! I love the comment Dennis made about that so-called mtv awards. hah :D

I knew he was a smart guy,...

Cool clean wholesome fun. its great!

    Thanks!

  • the best harmonies in rock n roll!

  • SO SO SAD

  • wouldn't it be nice if they could get along that nice today? LG adds a new sound that does compare to the originals but not quite the same. STYX does still rock however !!!

  • i have that album it is awsome

  • Dennis's latest album is fantastic. I saw Styx last year and they were still excellent, maybe not as good as the old days but they still rocked the place.

Both are genuine talents in a music world full of garbage, just be thankful they were together for a few great years and shut yer whining!

  • Tommy Shaw got the pipes

  • Talented lead singers and their egos..what can you do? I think the rest of the band had enough of Deyoung in the end.

  • Shaw seems to have all the same ego issues

  • I agree the rest probably did have enough of Dennis. But Dennis was the primary songwriter and singer in the band. If Styx had never had Dennis in it. They would have never been anywhere close to as big as they are.

  • "Come Sail Away" didn't make it to #1?....they played the hell out of that song on the radio.

  • I saw STYX perform in 1996, just awesome !!!

  • Such a distinct sound with their harmonies. Lots of good 70's memories for me. Good post.

  • OF COURSE the blondes are the backing vocals :)

  • Dennis is right about rock and tv. The show didn't come of well. It was only okay. Dennis, great though he was, came off like the little kid who wants everyone to like him but noone does. Its like he tried too hard. He's a great man, but he just needs to let go. The rest of the band isn't stupid.

  • denis looks like neil peart in this video

  • Both are rock GODS!

  • sorry, what were you replying to, i forgot

  • so this is from 1995 right?? Man dennis has aged in 14 years. Also, He looks older in the 83 sail away video clip here on you tube. The one where he is wearing orange shirt... Im confused...he looks so good here compared to the other clip from 83. In the niagra one he looks 75.

  • Dennis looks fine now. The only difference between now and then is the fact that he stopped coloring his hair.

  • I for got all the great songs they made, that was a good Riges & cathy Lee show.

  • Are Styx any relation to the Rolling Stones ? I mean Styx and Stones LOL

  • tommy made the band. he was also the most talented.

  • C0rrect my friend :D

  • Tom did not make the band he only took the band in a new direction. That is when he and Dennis started having trouble due to their creative differences.

  • Tommy Shaw was the most talented. Get that greatest hits album and look at songwriting credits.Dennis wrote 70 percent if their hits.

  • When is this from??? 1995? Wow man... I miss these guys together

  • there songs are great

  • too bad they edited out the part where JY cracks kathie lee over the head with his guitar.

  • LOL!

  • it seems odd the "J.Y." has the acustic guitar and Tommy has the eltrict...

  • Umm, both are playing acoustics. Tommy Shaw is using a Ovation 12 string (he usually plays a Taylor now when he plays acoustic, and he does seem to favor 12 strings).

  • saw dennis live 3rd row...extremely talented!

but tommy shaw is one of the greatest rock stars of all time!!!

  • I agree.Tommy Rocks!

  • Dude, the mad skills... They sound so great!

  • Watching this it's hard to believe what happened between these guys only a few years later...

  • regis has no idea about any of the stuff hes trying to ask them...which is kind of funny

  • dennis has greyed but regis looks the same,,go figure, maybe he is a robot

  • David Spade should play Tommy Shaw if they ever make a movie! LOL!

  • get horshack to play the drummer

  • ..........and the guy who plays Burke in Aliens could be Denis DeYoung!!

  • Thats better than what they got going on now Dennis Jy and Tommy got great harmonies together should have kept it together instead of fighting over nothing dam you guys

  • So many great songs. BTW--- Come Sail Away is about aliens. Just give it a listen.

  • Dennis Deyoung looks kinda like neil peart lol

  • I used to like Styx when I was 11 or 12 years old. Now it just makes me want to take cover by listening to some Van Der Graaf Generator or Ween.

  • Renegade sounded pretty good.

  • This is like a bad Saturday Night Live skit, like Wayne's World. They only play 10 seconds of each song. Ridiculous! I know there are time constraints on t.v., but just play one song all the way through!

  • No one can replace Dennis. He is a legend. I think that Larry is a good singer though.

  • I agree. A lot of die hard fans don't like Gowan. However, I think he is a great replacement. As in all great bands, egos clash, musicians get pissed, and members depart. As a guitaritst for over 40+ years of experience in bands, I can almost guarantee you DeYoung will never work with this band again. (Then again Hell froze over didn't it; So, I guess anything is possible). Keep rockin Styx!!!!

  • Saw Styx last night in Vegas. Larry Gowan is lights out! He is such a great performer and a great replacement for Dennis.

  • dennis rules! larry gowan is "Gowan" to hell! no one can replace dennis lol

  • The real point should be that though someone else may be able to replace Dennis, no one should replace him - the founder of the band and writer of most of the bands best songs. They fired him based on a misunderstanding against his wishes - a crime against rock 'n roll.

  • He actually wasn't the founder of the band. That title would go to the Panazzo brothers. Dennis wrote the chick songs. Tommy and JY wrote the good shit.

  • Wow, I really like the piano version of too much time on my hands. Sounded just incrediblle.

  • When was this? Technically they cant reunite because john is dead and now Chuck can only play when his health allows

  • they sure were screaming it out, oh well, i guess it was a good tv performance, what happened to orginal bassist, did he pass away?

  • Styx unleaded...ugh

  • unplugged?

  • At 6:57..."Better than flowers anyday"..Awesome!

  • Yeah eaglewheels1995, Kathy Lee was right. A song written to you is "better than flowers". The flowers wilt and die and get tossed in the trash. A song can live forever.

  • and royalties from the song ain't bad, either...

  • Gosh I miss these days

  • Its to bad the tension is so great. JY could be playing lead for Priest, Dennis could be the music director for any major musical, and Tommy is just a Rock star. What I don't get is why they never play Cold War. That has to be my favorite Tommy Shaw solo. They still kill but Deyoung is really tough to replace on vocals.

  • Wow. You're an idiot.

  • i'm gonna see him in concert yeah!

  • Regis is a big jerk and Lee is an annoying- laughing-nut. They don't sound bad, just not enough time for the entire songs.I love renegade. Quit watching the show a long time ago. How Kathie Lee is back on television I will never know.

  • Regis has them jumping from song to song like a pack of College drunks at Karoke night at the local tavern. These guys are better than that! To many great songs to "diseect" out in 5 mins. Shame on you Regis and Kathy you goof

balls "Not the them song from the pig Movie" then a horde of sad nervous fake laughs. Disgusting!

  • I love Styx, but they sounded like crap!

  • I remember watching this when it aired back in 95! STYX is awesome! hey sound just as good live. Not too many people can sing that well live.

  • Great band, all very talented individuals...interesting that JY was/is an aeronautical engineer also,a good rock band always pays better...

  • Thing about Styx's songs is, they translated so well when they were played acoustically. This and the stuff on here from Tommy Shaw's Borders tour is just as good as what they played onstage.

  • Too bad they cant work out their differences this is great!

  • tommy has a 12 string...

  • tommy has a 12 string...

  • I was there in front of the piano at this taping - way cool to see it!

  • Great post! Thanks. To those of you injecting yourself into the band's internal divisions, get real and enjoy the music.

  • Need to turn down JY's mike and turn up Tommy's and Dennis'!!

  • although they dont play as a band today u can tell how much dennis and tommy feel the music

  • That was great! Thanks for the post.
