Strictly speaking, this wouldn't be either fingerpicking or Travis-stye. Merle used a thumbpick and only his right index finger, and the people who really play his style call it "thumbpicking." "Travis picking" as usually used, as a synonym for fingerpicking in general, is largely a misnomer. But in any case, Buddy is using a flatpick plus his fingers, and where I come from, they call that "chicken picking."
I love it. Around 1:24 or so, he does flub up a little bit- and then Welk busts his chops about it after the song. Classic! Ol' Larry is pretty hard on the kid. If that the most I messed up, I'd be doing good!
I notice it's hybrid style with flatpick instead of a thumbpick

what kind of fender is it?

Yeah. Not exactly Travis Picking, he's just kind of noodling out the melody above the base notes. Travis would have rhythmic patterns.

That may be a Travis style on the verse but that's the Chet bridge. For sure! Especially on the second brdg.

Look at the size of those pick ups! I think they may be steel guitar pick ups - it would make sense since he is a steel whiz too.

I can't really tell, but either that strat is huge, or he's just really small. Really nice playing in this video. Stars for you.

I posted the San Antonio Rose clip from 1966.
