I think putting the baby to potty every 20 minutes is little too much. I'm just starting out with EC and I'm still halfway through reading this book called EC Simplified (Hey, I'm a work at home mom of 2, so right now, I need simple, straightforward, and step-by-step guidance!) but based on what I read in the book so far, it's one thing to be observant and to respond to signs, but it's another to be making life all about potty. I honestly don't think that's how EC is supposed to be.
I wonder how they do it in Afrika. People who went there say that their babies NEVER wear diapers, yet mothers NEVER get soiled while carrying their babies. So how they do it?
It's not really potty training, its just avoiding diaper training when you think about it. Newborns famously eliminate when their diapers are removed, and I've seen advice that says to hold the diaper on them if they do that, and don't remove until they're finished. To me that sends the message to a baby that this is the place to eliminate, and then when they have learned to soil themselves and become indifferent for 2 or 3 years, then you try and teach them to do it in a different place?
We did Infant pottiy training from the second week after birth. At 40 days our baby already knew the potty (we used a plastic basin) and eliminated when we positioned him over it. Later he DID NOT NEED any potty training, since he already had elimination habits aquired earlier, just the difference was that instead of the basin now he was sitting on the potty.
Its funny how recently americans have become fascinated with "new" childcare methods such as this and breastfeeding for example when its been done for thousands of years and is still done in most countries today
Potty training could sometimes be so hard.. But when you got used to it.. It seems like nothing, just part of your daily life with your baby.. Thanks for sharing this such informative clip.
@strollertwinbaby You make a great point here - that elimination communication is a lifestyle, in the same way that diapering is a lifestyle. Once you ease into it, it's just routine. :)
A baby is not gna want his "mother" to put him over a potty every minute! They r goin to b thinkin "gosh, that pesky woman again? Get her away from me! Don't she understand I am just a baby who wants to explore? I hate u mom!" Geez! I startd potty training my boy at 15 mnths! Why? 1.that's when he mastered the skill of walking with out any more wiggles 2.he understands what he is told 3. he was able to say peepee or poo! 4.he was actually excited&happy he was using the potty!
A baby is meant to be a baby(up to 2 years) then they are a toddler. The parent is too lazy to change diapers. Some of those 5 day old babies are held over a toilet and if the mom loses grasp he might land in the toilet. If the mom is a crack head the baby may be flushed down the toilet!
@misslcean57 Too lazy to change diapers? This takes much more time and effort from the parents than just sticking a diaper on it and changing it every 2-3 hours. This practice is very common in many ocuntries outside of Western countries.
Look, who is talking experties...Male (!) doctors. Again....Don't get me wrong: I am only saying, it's almost funny. After all, they themselves have hardly ever worn (pardon me)a Maxi-Pad to see any sence in the power behind the EC movement.
it turns my stomach when I see huge mountains of dirty diapers rotting for generations ahead. in USA 22 billion dirty diapers are disposed in the environment every year. Just try to imagine a mountain the size of your city, consisting nothing but dirty diapers. Just because parrents prefer diapers instead to infant potty training.
Yes, disposable diapers are bad for the environment, but cloth diapers are another alternative if you don't want to do infant potty training. Which *I* don't! Putting your kid on the potty every twenty minutes? Some people just don't have the time. And just imagine the kid peeing on carpets or your couch. I could imagine to start doing this when my kid is about one, since it usually takes kid 8 to 10 months to get off diapers, my kid would be trained by two. That's early enough for me.
@misslcean57 I just hold my daughter in front of me on the adult toilet now (12 weeks old). She absolutely loves it and will go in any toilet now public or private. It is an instinct infants are born with. I saw them doing this type of thing when I was in Bangladesh. Although they don't always even own toilets there. This is the way it has been done for thousands of years before diapers. I was skeptical but it works.
I see a lot of these children without at least underware on...I don't get why they leave them off...did they ever think of hygene? All kinds of dirt and what-not could get up there...ya it sucks being in a diaper...but what about that dust bunny riding in your crack?
I am big pottytraining fan. What do you think people do in countries where are no diapers? The babys there are pottytrained by 12 month. Our older daughter was born in former Soviet Union in 1990. There were no diapers. You start in 7 weeks and you just hold baby over bowl or potty every 2-3 hours. When they start saying mama, they can also say pee pe so by 12 month they will ask you when they need to go to toilet. Our 9 year old daughter who was born in USA was potty trained by 14 month.
I watched my mom do it with my siblings (USSR). I was too young miself to remember by what age exactly -- but , sure, still infants -- they both could articulate their need-to-go.
There's no pressure, it is the child that DOES NOT WANT to poop in the pants. Have you tried to poop in a diaper? So, if you have a choice, would not you choose the potty instead?
Actually most of these kids are potty trained by 1 year. I was potty trained by 18 mo. Most kids are not potty trained until they are 3, many as late as almost 4.
Your comment is very ignorant- what do you think MOST of the world does with their children? Almost 70 percent of the worlds children never wear a diaper...
I am a republican and by your comment you seem to be one as well?
IMO this video was a biased. it showed a frantic woman searching for any sign of her baby wanting to eliminate, filming only a "false alarm", and saying that she brings the baby to the potty ever 20 minutes. I've never heard that number before. in all my research most parents bring the baby 6 to 10 times a day. They're obviously trying to make ec a spectacle when it's the norm nearly everyplace else. and of course the pediatrician is going to disagre with ec, he has his own book to sell!
That pediatrician is misunderstanding the motives behind ec. Its not about making your kids potty trained, its about keepng them clean and communicating!! I love how he blames ec on americas anal retentive culture when its not even the norm here...
I used to think it was a bit strange too, but then I started putting my daughter on the toilet because she hated having her diaper changed so much. It was amazing to me how quickly she caught on. We are not totally diaper free, but we go through a lot less now than before.

I wanna know how old these children are now and how long it took them to become 100% diaper free without the aide of a parent or caregiver.
This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard and think that these parents want a pat on the back.
Stupid democratic liberals.
