@davidkkt34 Laettner was a solid pro and an All Star, who played hard and put up solid numbers for most of his long career. No point in comparing him to a complete bust. He was picked because they wanted one college player for that team, and I think Laettner at that time was voted the college player of the year.
@75samuel75 I wasn't calling the guy a horrible player. What I meant was, he didn't have much PT and was basically a random guy just like Morrison was in the Lakers.
@tiktokbum i think he was talking about the olympics prior to 1992. he was also on the 1988 team that placed 3rd. so he was saying how it was nice how they didnt win in 1988 and to come back the next olympics and take gold
Shaq, Hakeem the Dream, Isiah Thomas, Shawn Kemp, Mourning, Gary Payton, Kevin Johnson. Shit, even Kevin Duckworth should've been on the Dream team ahead of Laettner
go back and learn some USA basketball history. It was a college team for so long before the pros were playing. It is only fair to put atleast one college kid in the game. Plus...Laettner would own anyone of you on the court that have made a good or bad comment here.
Actually not quite. Daly had to get their egos on check before it ruined the team chemistry. I mean if you have 10 superstars in one team, you gotta make sure they don't become selfish and try to steal all the spotlight.
isiah thomas should had been on that team...He beat Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. He won two championships. Pippen should had never been on that team along with stockton. Dominque, bernard king and even dennis rodman should had made that team. Anybody that felt that isiah should not had been on that team dong know basketball
@haczu86 i see him as the second best behind of course magic, but all time assist and steal leader kind of hard to argue that he isn't the top 5 pg with all time assist record cuz thats the pg job
@espndude7777777 its coz he doesnt have a ring coz he stayed loyal to one team and was unlucky that their prime came with the era of MJ and the bulls... otherwise he would have had two rings and nobody could dis him...
Are you serious? You're going to replace Stockton, one of the best PG of all-time, with Dennis Rodman? Bernard King wasn't even playing at the time you stupid fuck.
I'm just grateful to this day that Isaiah "Cry baby" Thomas wasn't on that team. Not only was he/is a uber dirt bag, but he wasn't one of the top 11 players in the league.
it was the NBA + one and Laettner was the Best college player on the team that won the NCAA championship 2 x I think so who else should they have put on the team to represent? I believe Laettner to his credit knew it was luck to be on the team. He has nothing to be ashamed of. Chris Mullins put up the 3rd best #'s stats wise on the team and to me didn't get enough hype for being the stats wise 3rd best on the team. He had game high points once or twice and his out side shot on that team was key
Not just greatest team ever but also ONLY team of adults that ever played. Classy, well spoken, respect, professionals. After that team it was all downhill
On that team, they wanted to add one non-professional. The last two choices were between Laetner The collegiate player of the year, or Alonzo Mourning, fresh out of H.S in Virginia. Even though, Alonzo out played Laetner during those sessions, Laetner got the nod.....largely because of Coach K, being on the coaching staff.
As everyone has stated before,It was a rule that one college player HAD to be selected, and Laettner was the best player in college at the time so he was the choice.
it was said that Jordan was a major reason for isiah thomas not making the dream team squad and while i agree that Laettner was picked for the team mainly because of his skin colour as Shaq was being hyped up much more then laettner at the time.
If Shaq was on this team then it would not have had even 1 weak link, not that Laettner wasnt a good player he just wasnt great!
I still think they should have put the human highlight film on that squad instead of laettner tho
@rasetsuyagami Because the rules stated that they had to have at least 1 college player, Laettner was college player of the year so he got put in the side
Christian Laettner: I just can't say enough about 'MY' team, we would've never had a chance if not for me being apart of this team. My favorite memory was during the Gold Medal game during Croatia, we were down one and Grant Hill inbounded the ball, and I hit the turn around jumper a the free throw line to win the game. MJ, Magic and Larry told me how great I was and that I was the greatest ever.
People seem to forget or just not realize: Laettner was the best player in college at the time. He might have also been the most hated college player. Nonetheless, if they were going to add one college player and one player ONLY, Leattner made the most since at the time, as his Blue Devils just came off their 2nd straight NCAA championship
It was a shame that Thomas or Dominique wasn't on the squad. Bird and Magic were at the end of their careers also, but they of course deserved to be on the squad. Mullin is a question mark for sure. I heard about those practices! They went at it in the practices. Greatest team ever assembled.
@thewolfmanchu Yeah, I think about that every time the Dream Team is mentioned. Believe it or not, the Dream Team could have been even BETTER. Scrap Mullin and Laettner, and replace them with Isiah Thomas and Dominique Wilkins. Funny thing is it wouldn't have made any difference.
mullin was all nba first team selection in the olympic year.......so no question any more about his basketball skills.......he deserved that spot.....
It's been my experience that you don't try to dwell on the past or imagine what could have been, for better or worse. Had the US team beaten the Soviets in 1972, we might have never had assembled the Dream Team in 1992.
I would have replaced Mullin with James Worthy and Laettner with Hakeem Olajuwon. Since Olajuwon didn't become a US citizen until later, Shaquille O'Neal would have been a better choice than Laettner. Who knows? They might not played as well together as they did. Let it be :)
Chris Mullin and especially Christian Laettner where definitely not worthy of being on that Dream Team. Token White Boys imo. and I am a caucasian so don't say it's a racist comment it's just a fact. However, they were still the greatest team ever assembled.
I agree. They said they wanted to put one college kid on the team in regards to Laetner. But I think they just wanted to whiten the team up. Shaq wasn't in the pros until the next season and they could've used Shaq. There was a lot of attention on Shaq while he was at LSU. Chris Mullin was a decent player.
@kennethhamilton2003 - Chris Mullin is second to Larry Bird as the best shooter of that team and again 2nd behind Bird in NBA at that time. Laettner is the questionable addition.
@drestyle1 I believe they had the option of Christian or Shaq and don't know why they went with Christian. In any event, it may have been best to save Shaq for 1994 like they did and get that '94 gold 'cause we needed Shaq moreso in '94 then here.
@drestyle1 The reason why he was on that team, was David Stern wanted one rookie on the team and Laettner had just pulled out the amazing NCAA championship last second shot win for Duke that year.
@vincespell why? it's suppose to be the best players in the u.s. There were guys in the nba riding the bench who would shit on laettner. the usa commitee was all over his nuts even though he had no right to be in there. It was a spit in the face of many great players in the nba.
@wallen444 christian laettner was a college standout but didnt have a successful professional career. he was still kind of a superstar in 92 so he got picked
@ParkerTehOwnerer1337 i know right damn if you woulda just had shaq dang!!!!
