Sylvanas used to be a High Elf (the original elf race). She was captured by the Scourge, and rather than killing her they turned her into a Banshee and force her to do their will.

She committed many vile acts, but eventually found her conscience again, and knowing what she had done, escaped the Scourge to gather others and form the Forsaken, a group of undead who have kept their memories and fled from evil.

She now resides in the Undercity as their queen, seeking a way to return to her kin.

Because the original high/blood elves were very crude looking, Sylvanas used a slightly tweaked Night Elf model. Once they added new Blood Elven models, updating her to a Sin'dorei model wasn't on the agenda, apparently. Though most other elven models used the newer model.

Sylvanas now sports her own semi-unique model. She's now a highly modified Sin'dorei model with clothing/armor that resembles her Dark Ranger attire of WC3.
