It's pretty incredible, really, that he was convicted. VERY rare to convict on circumstantial evidence, even as overwhelming as this is--the prosecutors did an amazing job, because a defendant like that, who WANTS to believe someone like MacDonald could murder his family? He's educated, he's charming & good-looking--he went to Princeton, for God's sake! The prosecutors really hit it out of the park. Those poor babies & Colette...so terribly sad. Cannot believe he was JOKING on TV about this!
3:28 Heartbreaking...And is it just me or did MacDonald, on The Dick Cavett show, referring to him and his wife Collette watching Cavett's show with a smile, seem a bit inappropriate, especially taking into account that he was talking about the night of his family's murder?
a short haircut soldier in polarized 1960s usa, goes from being in the armed forces and having hippys kill his family----to moving to california, around 1970s hippys and draft dodgers!!!
@jksonny--- to be frank, sometimes I STILL vacillate between "did he or didn't he?" He's just SO convincing, & his story has never changed.. Would u mind sending me a private message on this site, or just detailing for me here, what YOU believe MacDonald's motive was? And, why do u think he killed the girls? Why do u think he got so angry with Colette, etc? I know I'm asking 4 alot-- but it's YOUR fault f0r getting me so curious, lol! But, rest assured, I'm 99.9% sure he DID do it. thanks!
cont'd: Now- I'VE done CPR -- in hospitals, patients' private homes, etc. .... & I'm Sorry, "Jeffy" -- there is NO WAY u applied CPR to Kimberley OR Kristen! The FIRST thing u do, the first instruction in "CPR class": TURN THE PATIENT ON THEIR BACK, to facilitate an open airway. But, those poor angels, are on their SIDES, w/ their little arms UNDER them... ? HOW did he breathe into their mouths OR compress their chests, when their little mouths are turned to the SIDE? No. Way.
To "jksonny"-- first, thanks SO MUCH for uploading this gem of a mystery... thanks 2 u, I've been onlne for the last week, studying Bob Stevenson's collection of documents & Mr. Kassab's notes.... do YOU believe MacDonald "did it"? As for me: I've tried, SO HARD, to keep an open mind- But THEN, , I saw something that stopped me cold. And it was this: MacDonald said that he checked his daughters' pulses, THEN began trying to apply CPR, right? Ok.... cont'd in next comment..
@1lricardo I've never had any doubt that MacDonald is 100% guilty. His story is a complete fabrication. Among many, many others are the issues you mentioned. Plus, if Mac gave both girls CPR, why were they found on their sides? And why were both under the covers? He also said that during CPR, he saw air coming from Kimberly's chest. Kimberly had no chest wounds and even if she did, it would have been too dark to see anything (he said he didn't turn on the lights). The list goes on and on.
@jksonny -- Seriously, u NEVER wondered if his story could be true, even at first? What do u make of "Helena Stoeckeley" ? I just watched the "60 minutes" tape, & she APPEARED to be relatively sane at the time; a little "loopy", IMO, but she wasn't , like, confessing all over the place, as Mr. Kearns suggested. She even said that she was afraid to name the "cult" , b/c of her unborn child BTW, whatever became of that baby, since Helena died the very next year, do u know ? Thanks!
@1lricardo No. I never believed MacDonald's story. It's too ridiculous. As for Stoeckley, she confessed, un-confessed, and re-confessed again and again. None of her stories match each other, nor do they match the physical evidence. They also don't match MacDonald's own version of events. Helena was diagnosed as a paranoid schizoid early in life. She was just a sad, lonely, mentally ill alcoholic/drug addict who wanted attention. MacDonald is a dangerous sociopath who is right where he belongs.
@Gwyka -- whoa! Thanks for the info. Yeah, I remember Helena S.'s pregnant interview w/ T. Gunderson - & I read her autopsy report; it stated that she'd been dead, at home, for a few DAYS, & her one year old son was left with her body- alone- until somebody found Helena! The Medical Examiner also made a note on the report, that he had to contact the State prison to both notify & get her husband's authorization to do the procedure. Her entire life was just... "disturbing", in a word.
@karmalevel -- & u are a total moron. What are u talking about? How is saying, "I'm 99.9% SURE he DID it", working for" MAC'S" camp, u trolling creep?
@jksonny there could never have come air out of Kim`s chest because her throat was severely damaged, thus the air he claimed to have pumped into her mouth could never reach the poor child`s lungs. For a high skilled medic he did a poor job, but at least he washed his own hands…..
@Hoth1907 Also, why perform CPR, then turn the girls onto their sides and pull up the covers? And Mac claims to have stood in the doorways of the girls' rooms and to have seen them covered with blood - impossible b/c he did not turn on the lights and the rooms were almost completely dark. Also, according to Mac, he had been injured at this point so his blood should have been found in/on both girls' beds.
@recoverfromhydro No. Freddy and Mildred Kassab died in 1994 (Freddy was Colette's stepfather - her biological father committed suicide). Jeff's father died when he was in medical school and his mother died in 1990.
He has the most hateful eyes. They are truly scary looking. I have only seen eyes like that in one more individual since that was also a murderer....Casey Anthony.
2:15 yep. I was just going to make a point lol but there are real psychopaths reading these comments so I'll not point out something I really wanted to point out lol
@RIPmyers Yeah! That's exactly what I thought you were going to say! You are obviously just some troll looking to hang your tag where ever you please; however, you need to back up your lies with some actual evidence! Cant believe that this guy after murders of his entire fammily in such a horrific way, is like going on tv shows and making a laught??? I acctualy was on his side when I started to watch this, cause I colud not believe that a father can stabed his little 2yr old girl so many times ... Now, I think that his a 100 percent sociopath!!!
@NoelNora Wow! Try providing some actual evidence before convincing yourself that MacDonald is "a 100 percent sociopath." I recommend reading Fatal Justice: Reinvestigating the Macdonald Murders by Jerry Allen Potter, Fred Bost . A well-documented argument for the other side of the MacDonald case. An argument that the prosecution mishandled key crime-scene evidence, withheld potentially exculpatory material, and discounted confessions from other suspects. You are evidentially very gullible!
those footages of him in '79 when he was first arrested and stuff, he looks really guilty. he looks pissed of and irritated or something. i think an innocent person wouldnt look like that at all.
@bellacinderellakk how to fail in life 101 should be the title of the book. after u commit the murders, u go on tv bragging and stuff? no sense of right and wrong? no religion or God?
I was just musing....he says, "By telling them I found the killers, I wanted to assuage THEIR grief"---in other words, HIS was perfectly non-existent--in fact, he feels nothing!
@kfag101 It's excellent. It may be a bit overly dramatic at times but it's a good read. It's also disturbing and may make you feel a bit paranoid about some of the people you know.
@jksonny Greatest true crime book i've ever read. I read it in one sitting & it's almost 700 pages! The way it's written will keep you turning page after page & yes it is dramatic, but very detailed about MacDonald the man, his life, his family, & the case. I highly reccomend it. Also, see the tv movie with Gary Cole playing MacDonald. Very good!
@lynn0511 yep Mcginnis was on his side at first, but he says in the book that his doubts grew as the trial wore on. He comments on how cold mcdonald was throughout the whole trial concerning the murders. The book actually gave a strong motive that the lawyers couldn't come up with- a combination of diet pills & mcdonalds "narcissistic personality" triggered his rage the night of the murders.
@kfag101 nah. Schizo or mentally ill folks sure. But sociopaths know damn well right from wrong. They do know how to act appropriately, they just feel they dont have too. MacDonald is narcisistic - cares only about himself. He didn't snap, he didnt lose control. There was no compulsion. He maybe didnt plan for it, but he let it escalate and decided to get rid of his family. He felt he deserved better, and they were leeches. Its so sad. Im glad he got caught.
@kfag101 Kassab was also a very tough guy. He was involved in spying in WWII and his own wife and child had been killed during a bombing raid. MacDonald picked the wrong guy to jerk around.
