Check out NLP as this will help you all as you navigate the ADHD world. I am a Practitioner and have had great success with my grandson. All the best!
I have a nine year old who is in public school- I am thinking of pulling him out and homeschooling. Is there any legal paper work I have to do to do this through the state? If so-what?
@lisagrayz It varies from state to state and between municipalities, but you'll usually have to fill out some paperwork with the local district in order to make sure things are on the up and up. Also, you'll need to make sure that you can meet the educational criteria, so you'll need to research what that is for your state. It's a hard thing to do. In your position, I would seek out some professional advice (if you can find it).
I'm so late in watching videos, I hope the home schooling is going well! very challenging I'm sure. Darren's got ADHD, since he was quite young...so yea, complex issue and knowing how to work with it, instead of battling with it.
@Lara604 I didn't know that Darren had the same kind of thing going on. Are you constantly having to remind him of things? Always have to make sure he's got his wallet and keys in the same spot at night so he can find them in the morning? Over time, Priscilla has gotten used to this sort of thing and she's actually read books on it in order to sort it all out. It's a learning experience for everyone.
@fuerve Yes, he was diagnosed as a kid back in the 80s, and as an adult it took on some different traits, but he's been on meds most of the time that help him with focus and prioritizing. It really is a learning experience for everyone, and needs constant attention and understanding from both parties.
oh yeah, I do have a variety of textbooks on hand in all subjects. I would recommend you make sure that the metric system and decimals and fractions are "overtrained".
Hannah is pretty active and I am curious to see whether or not she will show signs of ADHD (as do I..although I have not been formally diagnosed). I will be following close and I wish you all the best! What a neat time for all of you! xoxoxo
It's very neat but also very scary, in its way. It's a big change and a big step without the lead-up of actually having brought him up and been privy to his needs throughout his whole life. It's like a fast train making a 30 degree turn at full steam.
Good luck man! I always wondered what would happen if you tried to teach middleschoolers or highschoolers something like Linear Algebra or Logic. That would be pretty interesting.
We're hoping to cover some classics as well. Greek and Latin roots, some classic literature, stuff that they apparently don't get to as often in school nowadays (or am I just not seeing it?).
Thanks for the well wishes. Yeah, we're going to attempt to keep it up at a fairly high level for a number of reasons, not least of which is that the only textbooks we have are from college :)
Your nephew is lucky to have such a caring aunt and uncle. I will be looking forward to your videos re this subject. If I come across any info, I will let you know. Quite a challenge and quite an opportunity. Good luck.

I'll definitely go in for the logic when I get a chance.

if any help in science and german is needed just give me a shout

Hey, we'll take all the help we can get. We'll see how he's doing when we get to that point. Thanks for the offer.

That'll be fun. Prepare my friend! Let me tell, as father of a teenaged kid, they learn at a much faster rate than we did!
ReverendAtomSmasher 2 years ago
I certainly hope so, because I was pretty dense when I was a kid.
fuerve 2 years ago
Hell, I'm pretty dense now! lol Seriously though, my son was dealing with some subjects I didn't touch until High School in 7th grade....

Wow. Kudos to you teaching an ADHD child latin roots!

@fuerve lol, well they say with each generation what you learn is pushed down three grades.
They'll be learning in middle school what you learned in high school.
Good luck man, and all the best. It was nice seeing a video from you again.

It starts today! Right now, the missus is at home getting the boy ready for his first day. She's really nervous but very determined to make it work.
