  • 1:51 what the fuck

    this cat

    is so insanely next level

  • Beautiful stuff...awesome playing....

  • This IS some good trombone playing!!!

  • Mr Mason...... I slacked....... I called your Northwestern phone number..... and you called me back!!! You are better than most people.... most people dont even return phone calls....

That said.... I called you.... asked about a Master's program at Northwestern.....

You were so kind.... so sincere.....

I am still here..... I still think about your sound......

This is the video that made me think beyond my playing styles.....

    Someday.....right???

    Keep shredding!!!!!!

    D. Brogan.

  • Who would dislike this?

  • This is the most insanely badass trombone shredding I've ever seen.

  • Ok, Elliot. The best compliment I can think of is that you make the trombone sound appropriate for contemporary jazz.

  • Cool man, i been trying to really elaborate in im improv so listening to some of your stuff is crazy cuss you rite on the money with it so, big-ups to you man and your awesome playing dude. I have a few videos up feel free to kick me a new a-hole.lol... I need it.

  • Hey mason is this a different mode your playing in or is it the key?

  • @MrDerrickHarris

I try not to think in modes or keys, more like a sound over a sound.

A sound that's personal to you will have more of an emotional impact.

Then connect these sounds by thinking more linearly instead of looking at things horizontally, just like a piano player connects a progression when comping.

    Best -Elliot

  • Taking the Watrous approach to the next level...I'm digging it

  • There's more inspiration in this solo than I've heard in a long time. Thanks for posting!

  • WOW..THAT'S SOME GOOD AIR...

  • Wow, killer trombone work!!! Nice Fedora bass too.

  • Elliot, is there any news on your debut album? I would love to buy it once it's released...

  • Thank you for your interest. The album is recorded, mixed/mastered. We're finishing up the artwork and should have it ready for sale within a month.

I will also put up a new 10 min movie consisting of live/mixed video footage from inside the studio.

  • Elliot Mason's lines are so harmonically complex!

  • what sort of scale exercises did you work on. and what sort of flexible excercises did you do?

  • WOW. I can't believe how much I enjoyed this. Very nice playing and interaction amongst the musicians.

  • Who is that guy in the red shirt? Anyway hey, today I learned Les Paul died. Also thinking about Frank Rosolino at the moment.

  • one of my favorite vids on this site. it definitely inspires me to shed my intervals!

  • I never tire of listening to you Elliot, simply mind blowing playing and harmonic ideas, the future of jazz is in very safe hands with the likes of you continually pushing the envelope.

  • who's the sax player at the very beginning whom we don't get to hear?

  • Ada Rovatti.

She just sat in for this tune, she's killin'

  • elliot- a blunt question, but what kind of stuff do you shed in order to play leaps and jumps at faster tempos? (besides relaxing the chops)

  • To begin with try doing basic 4th and 5th cycles from low E's & F's to as high as you feel comfortable, back down & up continuously. The cycles help you to hear the note first before pitching it. Then just work on speeding it up, analyze yourself, figure out what you're doing wrong when the note isn't centered. -Elliot

  • He's amazing: part of a new breed of "Super Players" like Wycliffe Gordon, and Marshall Gilkes.

  • You are scary, man. Seriously...wow. Any chance you'd be interested in coming out to the 76 trombones festival in Las Vegas this November?

  • Best trombone player ive ever heard in my life.He must have a special bone that anables him to play with such ease.Sounds like this guy is the next evolutionary link that will propel trombone to a new level for mankind.

  • ......

no way man that is just...good. Very very very very good. Really inspiring stuff

    :)

  • ....... indeed!

  • yo elliot mason ain't the only one with that much boblookable bop of doom. You almost forgot about Issac Smith

  • Elliot,

for the love of god please come do a show out on the west coast of canada with your band or one that features you. I would be overjoyed at the prospect of seeing you play.

  • WOW.This trombone player is so amazing.I had no idea that it was even possible to play the trombone like this!IM going to be in a lot of pain for a long time after hearing this .

  • I have never heard any bone player even close to as amazing as this genetic freak .I have never even dreamed it was possible to do that on bone .SCARY>

  • Elliot is no genetic freak. He plays so brilliantly because he shedded long and hard from a very early age - about three, I believe.

  • Elliot Mason is the freakiest and most harmonicaly advanced trombone player that ever existed. There isnt any other trombone player that could even come close to what he plays on trombone. He must be accessesing hyper innerdimmensional information from other worlds and realities.

  • einstien on trombone

  • best trombone of his generation . this guy has complete control of his instrument .his articulations are hyper clean .there is surely no one who wouldnt shudder with fear when he walks into the room .

  • Simply Awesome....

    Come to Miami!!

  • i think i came...

  • That's very interesting.

    Thanks for the info!

  • not that it matters too much, would you mind telling me what horn/mouthpiece set up you are using?

  • I am now using a heavy Bach 7c mouthpiece with a custom flatter rim. The bell section is the 1st prototype of a new trombone under my name coming to the US market late 08. Andy Taylor from the UK will be spinning double the thickness red brass bells. Mike Corrigan & I have collaborated designs to bring unbelievable & unique sounding slides to match. I'm ecstatic that the trombone community will for the 1st time have this custom dark centered sounding horn as an option. -Elliot

  • I have a large bore bell section that Andy Taylor build (507) and they are certainly interesting horns.... not particularly forgiving of sloppy playing but very responsive when played cleanly. Yours is the only other Taylor trombone bell I have ever seen.... you sound great on it. Hugh

  • people aren't supposed to be able to do that on trombone! you sounded great last night at bass hall man

  • One of my favorite videos on YouTube! Keep posting!

  • think i'm gonna suicide after hearing that... :D

  • interesting, i really didn't dig this when i heard it the first few times but now i really like it. Keep killin it dude.

  • Burnin'. Seriously, man, that's absolutely unreal.

  • does anyone know that he's double tonguing or is he really doodle tonguing?

  • Neither, out of the two it's closer to doodle as the tongue is moving up and down rather than back and forward, but even compared to the doodle the position of the tongue is slightly different. Try using syllable 'dar-dle' and experiment moving the tip of your tongue from the bottom of your front teeth to the roof of your mouth to see what's comfortable for you. I actually use a fast single for most of the time and combine it with the above.

  • Elliot, you need to make a video (DVD) of your practice session(s) and just talk about how you do this stuff on trombone. Its pretty frickin amazing.

  • Killing. Ada Rovotti finishing her solo at the start?

  • my god....

  • Holy shit!!! I just creamed myself....

  • i need to get some new pants on.

  • I can imagine this is what would happen if McCoy switched to trombone. awesome sound man, very innovative

  • wow !!!

  • Killer solo! He sounds a little like Hal Crook.

  • He was a student of Hal's from the time he was 16 years old

  • Man, when I first Conrad Herwig I was pretty floored, now this guy has gone one step further.

  • Congrats on joining the LCJO, Elliot. Bet you don't get to stretch out like this though!

  • ummm....what just happened? I think I wet myself. Elliot, you're killin, dude...

  • Elliot.... come through Richmond, VA!!! There are at least 15 local trombonist who would stop all plans to see your performance. That solo was fabulous!!!

    db RVA

ps... Rex Richardson(trumpet) is here in RVA. That would be one kick ass quintet gig!!! I already have the back up band charted in my head with the best local players.

  • Amazing!

  • omg! you are amazing! How did you learn to play on that heavy ass taylor bell?

  • That is simply one of the most incredible trombone solos I've ever heard. I haven't heard anybody sound like that on trombone- holy crap!!! Elliot is blazing new territory on trombone, and it will take a while for everyone else to catch up.

  • Amigo debe saber que Jaco toco en ese proyecto pero ahorita esta tocando con el pianista michel camilo

  • Elliot Mason sounds just like Michael Brecker on trombone....hes the nastiest trombone player alive...Wycliffe Gorden, and Robin Eubanks are bad too!

  • Just obscene! I hope Elliot realises he is going to be personally responsible for the detruction of loads of trombones across the world as players will see this and just chuck their instruments in the bin!

  • dude, he is by far the best trombone player (technically) on this planet. ellisot mason is a beast.

  • Yo fui a ese conecierto porque pensaba q el bajista era Jaco Pastorius,,, menos mal q bajaron el video porque en esa cancion me quede dormido,,,

  • dude wtf

  • Beautiful, thanks for posting!
