DAM !! IM GETTING OLD,I remember listening to this on a little transistor radio going from wash dc to toronto canada for a class field trip (french) in aprilof 1970-something remembering the beautiful sites on the way up but making this my favorite song on the way up and back.looking for it on any staion.
The nuance was leaving his ( Marotta) high hat open a hair that created the buzz sound;infact, he said he didnt even know he was playing with it open.
Jay"#9" Graydon, Chuck"Thumb Business" Rainey and Rick"High Hat" Marotta own this cut plus McDonalds awesome background vocals make this song a top 5 ever SD tune( the best driving song ever)-EPIC DAN !!If you dont get the nicknames that I have applied here watch the AJA greatest albums series it explains it all-Roger Nichol's work on this song shows why he was the best engineer ever!!Listen to the subtle nuances of this song every listen brings a new eargasm.
@79steelymatt Jay was the 9th guitarist to lay down a solo. Other guitarists who tried but did not make the final cut : Walter Becker, Larry Carlton, Rick Derringer, Dean Parks, Denny Dias, Steve Khan, and Lee Ritenour.
This song reminds me of the Blizzard of '78 early February, this song ruled the airwaves it seems at that time. Everybody home from work that week and chilling out listening to the radio.
sooo funny I am 41 and I remember driving around with my old man in his ford maverick and listening to him sing along with this on the radio thinking he was lame
HI Y'all GREETINGS FROM THE SOUTH MORNING WITH MOMMY I WANT A BETTER EXISTENCE FOR KAS EVEN IF I HAVE TO DIE AND NO LONGERF BE THE SHIT HOT PHARMACIST.
No other band in the history of popular music so effectively melded Rock and Blues phrasing into jazz structures so effectively , Their arranging skills are peerless , and for all its subtle complexities and virtuostic performances , the music has raw heart and soul and grooves hard , every song these two fuckers wrote was unforgettable....They have always been simultaneously behind the times and ahead of them ,an aural playground of their own .....and dont get me started on their lyrics .lol
@bear022013 dude...why must you be an idiot?!?! Music doesnt know a color...its 2012, stop acting ridiculous. Steely Dan actually had black guys in the band...but black or white its a great song
@bear022013 Hey idiot...some of the players on the song are black lol. Anyway, like Steve said...who gives a shit. Black or White this song is bad ass and all the guys who played on it are fantastic.
@aramanth Ok here is what I know about it. The pic was not created for the album. It's by photographer Hideki Fujii. The model is Sayoko Yamaguchi (model/actress). I've seen the Aerosmith video The Making of Pump & there is a bit where they are doing the album art and the art designer brings photos for the band to look at. I guess it was kind of the same as that you know. "this pic looks cool, let's use that". I heard that the album name comes from a friends wifes name.
The drum contributions of Bernard Purdie on The Dan LPs "The Royal Scam", "Aja", and "Gaucho" are mind boggling to say the least, a rare talent, a prodigy, this track, "Peg" is a fine example of an elite drummer joining Fagen and Becker.
at the end one of the back up singers really feels it. you have to listen for it but he goes. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhaaa. this is great music. also remember de la soul sampled this on there three feet high and rising album.
Yes Chevy played with these guys, a lot of musicians did. The beauty of Steely Dan is in the meticulous production of Donald and Walter. Everything is in perfect place and by that magic you can hear every instrument at once, no matter how many they've got going. I don't know if it's due to something in recording or in post, but you can hear every little dynamic. And to that end, one of the most iconic parts of this song is Michael MacDonald singing "Peeeg". :Love it.
@preorganizedchaos According to Wikipedia: Chevy played drums, in college, with Donald Fagan, and played drums and keyboards with a band called Chameleon Church

What can I say. The Dan Is AWESOME. Thank God for modern technology so this generation can hear what great music sounds like .Thank you Steely Dan for creating such tasteful music,I LOVE THESE GUY'S....I am not knocking todays so called artist but these dudes did not need gimmicks to convince the masses to notice them
14 years old and I used to hate Steely Dan. My dad would play it all throughout the house. I now thank him every day for it. Life is much richer when I have something to listen to that's not Justin Bieber.
@Maladjusted111 LMAO Same as me man! I'm 20 and I have this album and Katy Lied. Thanks to my uncle asking for a few Steely Dan songs on a cd, I came across them for the first time a year ago. Now to my surprise, I'm a fan of these guys. FUCK BIEBER, MINAJ AND OTHER CRAPPY POP ARTISTS. There's unknown talent out there, but it's all about looks anymore these days. That's why when I was in high school I didn't give a shit about other students liked. I liked what I liked.
I think I'm going to make a movie where two people who may have almost fallen in love are dancing with each other and flirting in a low key living room/kitchen university party. Cuz that's what this song makes me think of.

The great thing about 70's music was that you could have pop, rock,r&b,jazz, country,tv and movie themes and novelty songs all on the billboard top 40 chart at the same time.
SCREW michael mcdonald in all ways...except those that involve physical contact! anyway, what makes this is like all the other Steeley Dan's shit during this time...it was well written, usually hit home somehow, and made you relate in some way!!! Enjoy!!!
how cares jazz. classic or pop rock. everyone needs to stop trying to put everything in a catagory.... damn i love steely dan.... donald it just came back to me

Enjoy!!!
