  • The nuance was leaving his ( Marotta) high hat open a hair that created the buzz sound;infact, he said he didnt even know he was playing with it open.

  • quite possibly the best album of all time.

  • Jay"#9" Graydon, Chuck"Thumb Business" Rainey and Rick"High Hat" Marotta own this cut plus McDonalds awesome background vocals make this song a top 5 ever SD tune( the best driving song ever)-EPIC DAN !!If you dont get the nicknames that I have applied here watch the AJA greatest albums series it explains it all-Roger Nichol's work on this song shows why he was the best engineer ever!!Listen to the subtle nuances of this song every listen brings a new eargasm.

  • @79steelymatt Damn, that Chuck Rainey....

  • @79steelymatt Jay was the 9th guitarist to lay down a solo. Other guitarists who tried but did not make the final cut : Walter Becker, Larry Carlton, Rick Derringer, Dean Parks, Denny Dias, Steve Khan, and Lee Ritenour.

  • This song reminds me of the Blizzard of '78 early February, this song ruled the airwaves it seems at that time. Everybody home from work that week and chilling out listening to the radio.

  • That solo is short but very very innovative neo jazzy.

  • OMG, Listen to their incredible rhythm section!

    It's my favorite foreign movie!

  • The trumpet parts make my mouth water

  • The Bass Line to this track just makes it 1,000,000 time better. Just noticed that...

  • You can't help but smile when you hear this... :)

  • @SlumericanDream. What is wrong with you? This is one of the best classic rock songs ever!!!!

  • @SlumericanDream At least it's better than that gay pop shit

  • I love this song so much! One of the best rock bass lines of all time.

  • steely dan is such dope music

  • Where is my x-factor elegant motorcycle..oh..its coming.

  • This is what it feels like at Deham time raquet ball club with icy heat after.

  • This is what it feels like to go to Cambridge for a falafel by bike or lexus.

  • "I know you gonna love it! [peg]" He said her name like he knew she was fake lol.

  • "It's your favorite foreign movie"

I've always thought the lie referred to "your very foreign movie"...

  • @bear022013 dude...why must you be an idiot?!?! Music doesnt know a color...its 2012, stop acting ridiculous. Steely Dan actually had black guys in the band...but black or white its a great song

  • @bear022013 Hey idiot...some of the players on the song are black lol. Anyway, like Steve said...who gives a shit. Black or White this song is bad ass and all the guys who played on it are fantastic.

  • Best lyricists in rock.

  • Listen to Larry carlton and Lee Ritenour Room 335. That makes music so Awesome top Artist performing together :)

  • My absolute favorite Dan song among many great ones! Takes me back to when I was 15 again!! Such an great mix of styles and great harmonies!

  • One of my favorites from Aja. Great mix of Jazz and Funk.

  • I love the story behind the 2 guy's behind Steely Dan.....

    Music majors...of course.....

    Chick-Magnets.....NOT...

Makes for the best soulful sounds...heart-felt lyrics...Great Music!!!

  • 10 people don't like foreign films.

  • 8 lonely faggots out there.

  • @dillweed154 on the plus side there's 1,453 happy faggots.

  • @dillweed154

They wouldn't be lonely if they were bundled together.

  • Such a sweet song. I love how he says Peg. Fucking gorgeous!

  • One of my favorite effin' songs EVER.

  • For those who don't know, this song is about a Porn actress. Just listen to the lyrics :D.

    "It's your favorite foreign movie"

    Love it.

  • Does anyone know anything about the cover art for Aja? I have always wondered...

  • @aramanth Ok here is what I know about it. The pic was not created for the album. It's by photographer Hideki Fujii. The model is Sayoko Yamaguchi (model/actress). I've seen the Aerosmith video The Making of Pump & there is a bit where they are doing the album art and the art designer brings photos for the band to look at. I guess it was kind of the same as that you know. "this pic looks cool, let's use that". I heard that the album name comes from a friends wifes name.

  • it will come back to YOU!!!!!

  • Just found out Sunday while watching VHI that this song is by Steely Dan. I've always loved this song. Makes me remember my childhood happily.

  • I would like to learn to DJ and use this as a sample... or remix it into something yummy. It would make a really badass dance beat.

  • @VictoriaCALL911 Tariq Lord - Deja Vu Uptown Baby

  • @VictoriaCALL911

Check out "Big Love" by Pete Heller. Classic house tune somewhat based on this song.

  • The drum contributions of Bernard Purdie on The Dan LPs "The Royal Scam", "Aja", and "Gaucho" are mind boggling to say the least, a rare talent, a prodigy, this track, "Peg" is a fine example of an elite drummer joining Fagen and Becker.

  • at the end one of the back up singers really feels it. you have to listen for it but he goes. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhaaa. this is great music. also remember de la soul sampled this on there three feet high and rising album.

  • CLUB KID Smokey

  • The beginning of Fusion.

  • Yes Chevy played with these guys, a lot of musicians did. The beauty of Steely Dan is in the meticulous production of Donald and Walter. Everything is in perfect place and by that magic you can hear every instrument at once, no matter how many they've got going. I don't know if it's due to something in recording or in post, but you can hear every little dynamic. And to that end, one of the most iconic parts of this song is Michael MacDonald singing "Peeeg". :Love it.

  • @preorganizedchaos According to Wikipedia: Chevy played drums, in college, with Donald Fagan, and played drums and keyboards with a band called Chameleon Church

  • @preorganizedchaos I thought Chevy Chase plays keyboards, Iv'e seen him.

  • sometimes i wish i could just go back to when this song was fresh. absorb every meticulous hi-hat, re-remember every golden note, re-learn all the words. learn all new air guitar choreography. -_-

  • What can I say. The Dan Is AWESOME. Thank God for modern technology so this generation can hear what great music sounds like .Thank you Steely Dan for creating such tasteful music,I LOVE THESE GUY'S....I am not knocking todays so called artist but these dudes did not need gimmicks to convince the masses to notice them

  • The great Steely Dan full of light and happiness. What a joy!

  • They set a precedent. They were their own band. Love them!

  • to me this is hands down one of the greatest pop songs of the rock era. Just so much going on in this song. Love that bass.

  • 14 years old and I used to hate Steely Dan. My dad would play it all throughout the house. I now thank him every day for it. Life is much richer when I have something to listen to that's not Justin Bieber.

  • @Maladjusted111 LMAO Same as me man! I'm 20 and I have this album and Katy Lied. Thanks to my uncle asking for a few Steely Dan songs on a cd, I came across them for the first time a year ago. Now to my surprise, I'm a fan of these guys. FUCK BIEBER, MINAJ AND OTHER CRAPPY POP ARTISTS. There's unknown talent out there, but it's all about looks anymore these days. That's why when I was in high school I didn't give a shit about other students liked. I liked what I liked.

  • the best ever band from sunderland.

  • My mom meets Michael McDonald in collage. Michael askes her for her name. My mom says Peggy. He starts singing the harmony to Peg. My mom faints.

No wait, just listen to those lyrics!

No wait, check out those horns!

    Wait, ain't that Michael McDonald?

    Wow, check out that solo!

    Man, this song has everything...

  • @bearmassaro You said it all! I hope you don't mind my quoting you in my blog.

  • @GentlewomanMs

    Not at all, blog away!

  • I think I'm going to make a movie where two people who may have almost fallen in love are dancing with each other and flirting in a low key living room/kitchen university party. Cuz that's what this song makes me think of.

  • I love this song so much!!

  • This song always puts a smile on my face. Peg forever!

  • Super Adventure Island!

  • Love the Michael McDonald background vocals in this!

  • Arrested Development's "Mr. Wendel" is another song that almost sounds like it was inspired by this, I guess not exactly sampled though...

  • Nerina Pallot covered this a few years ago too.

  • Chuck Rainey did a lot for this song !

  • chuck rainey on bass. killer.

  • @01tnql Amen, bro

  • Michael McDonald's vocals in the background are unmistakable. This is fantastic blend of; jazz, funk, and pop.

  • did steely dan ever record a song that was not tight and smookin? i dont think so!!!! my favorite 70s and 80s group.

  • this a great great song whatever genere it is !

  • This isn't a very good song..... repetitive. Oh well, I need to learn it for class.

  • @Benefit1970 OK. I'll bite. Give me an example of a GOOD song.

  • @tmack43 Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Good lyrics, complex, non-repetitive, tough harmonies, intricate structure. It's not just a matter of opinion, it's a matter of how much creativity was needed to construct the song, and how much talent was needed to pull it off. Also, it's possible to "not like" a "good" song, or "like" a "not good" song.

  • @Benefit1970 Why even bothering commenting if you don't like a song? You know you'll end up having lots of answers about it. I personally love this song, even if its not one of Steely Dan's highlights.

Hey, by the way is your nickname named after Jethro Tull's "Benefit" from 1970? I love that album

  • @Tullvideoclips I know, but I had to research the song for class, and I think that providing an honest comment is useful. I didn't seek it out to be negative. And yes, that is where my user name is from, that album kicks serious ass.

  • @tmack43 the anwser to this question benefit is that it depends on the person.

  • @Benefit1970 Get a new pot dealer, asshole.

  • @Benefit1970 A song isn't good because it's repetitive? you obliviously don't know allot about music then :)

  • I love Peg. This song makes me happy. The mixture of styles and the approach smacks of intelligent pop music. It's perfect!!

  • ....(With Lyrics) is there a version without?

  • As soon as you hear the first note of any tune by them you just know, STEELY DAN. Great Band and great tune, Thanx for the post.

  • They require no title. They are quite unique. Probably timeless!

  • Everybody owned this album. The best!

  • one of my best by steely dan great song with weed lol

  • Awesome song love it

  • I believe it's ALL somewhat correct! Why does music this good have to be defined, anyway?

  • Jen, sorry did'nt mean to call you a dude

  • Saw Steely Dan at the Tower in Philly. Fucking unbelievable show, they played Peg spot on.....Steely Dan Forever! I am only 33 but that was on the bucket list for sure. On the flip side all the once hippy free loving fans turned out to be a bunch of uptight non-dancing, or pot smoking (I WAS!) corporate suits that forgot how to have fun at a show. Please God let that never be me!

  • Jay Graydon on guitar.

  • that is one badass guitar solo in there - anyone know who played it ?

  • @outoworkdreamer Was it Skunk Baxter?

  • Comment removed

  • Good music has no genre.

  • haha i love to play this song on drums it has so many open spots for fill and its just a great song in general

  • Music is a universal language.

  • Steely Dan did tons of collaberation with studio and stand in musicians with tons of different influence from jazz to funk to soul and gospel. Thats why the sound is so amazing.....a combo of different influences. Michael McDonald steals this track with his insanely good backup vocal.

  • Michael McDonald's vocals pretty much make this track.

  • The great thing about 70's music was that you could have pop, rock,r&b,jazz, country,tv and movie themes and novelty songs all on the billboard top 40 chart at the same time.

  • soooo much went into this song and so perfection came out

  • Comment removed

  • now that's some good music

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh just enjoy it ocd

  • Everyone quit your petty bickering. This is timeless and priceless stuff.

  • Not that it really matters... but its " i've seen your pic shots. "

  • SCREW michael mcdonald in all ways...except those that involve physical contact! anyway, what makes this is like all the other Steeley Dan's shit during this time...it was well written, usually hit home somehow, and made you relate in some way!!! Enjoy!!!

  • how cares jazz. classic or pop rock. everyone needs to stop trying to put everything in a catagory.... damn i love steely dan.... donald it just came back to me

  • @MrMeddled who do you like to listen to?

  • @MrMeddled Why don't you go away and listen to whatever crap is in the charts nowadays....

  • Ahhh to be Peg ! LOL.

  • My nephew says that Donald Fagen looks like Squidward from Spongebob Squarepants.

  • It sounds like a black song.

  • @98bigbutt that was their objective when they made this

  • Peg is one lucky woman!

  • Seth Rogen can gargle my balls.

  • I can play the saxophone bit on the kazoo really well!!

  • Steeley Dan provided the sound track to my high school years in a southern California beach town.

  • The 70's had the best song writers and musicians of any other detail.

  • I love jazz like this

  • To Dennis 'E.M'- your post is the best most succinct analysis of Steely Dan and the misconception of them as ''jazz'' that I have read or heard. I am SO glad
