@kochs1000 (reading your comments).. nope, you're a dude!... with a name of "kochs1000"... impressive! Can you read music? Tabs? Read in general? I have and do play since the age of nine and can sight read (look it up) anything written on staff paper (take the cock out of your mouth... and look it up!). I can tell you that Phish makes 99..9% of bands out there look like they could be written in crayon. Get musical educated. Have a nice time at the American Idol Tour... u douche.
@kochs1000 then go watch something else asshole...i've seen all 3 incarnations of phish, and i can tell you that what i saw in 09-10 was better than anything in 10 yrs. i do agree that their new stuff is generally not up to the standards they've set over the years, but luckily they play way more than just that. and @georgiaswamper, get a fucking life and get over yourself. congrats, your bluegrass band plays better than a non-bluegrass band...not for long if phish practiced harder at it tho
i dont understand why people who dont get phish gotta bad mouth them and talk crap, its like why just because you dont get why they are the way they are you have to post a bunch of negative comments....people fear what they dont understand
you geeks have to get a life and quit blowing phish lol not very good anymore playedout and all thier new music sucks this band is done.sorry no thier not u will always have teenage srubs going to these shows thinging this is just like a dead show lol there are lots of better bands out thier. PHISH= DIRTBAG PHANS
@kochs1000 Based upon your spelling and grammar skills, I assume that you must be very intelligent. So intelligent, in fact, that you're picking up my sarcasm right now.
city slickers with bluegrass instruments. its amazing that with fuckin phd's in music they still cant even play close to any other bluegrass musician. i know 15 yr old kids that have more talent than this whole band!
God I miss phish, it will never be the same. No more shake downs no more vending beer is 13 bucks a glass cops every where and the sound isnt the same. the randomness isnt the same. where has the vibe gone. Am I alone here in missing phish even though they are still around?
@inkedlife62 dude i think phish is at the top of their game. Even though the venues may be bigger, the phans are all still the same. And listen to the shows from 2010 and 2011, they are playing amazing!! Maybe not as many goofy acts and stuff but the jams are insane!! It does suck that they can't play at a bar or something but a band this good was bound to get this big someday
i love bluegrass music. people should all realize that these guys are based in bluegrass being from virginia. does anyone know where they were doing this? msg me on my profile. thx. and to whoever posted this, right fuckiing on!
hey pkinngrinnin, look up Jeff Mosier and Blueground Undergrass. Jeff is the banjo player who taught these guys, or enhanced their, bluegrassability. Mosier is insanely talented, so they were evenly matched. Great stuff here.
Yeah, the big thing with Phish is at least they take chances. Sure they have off moments and even off shows but there are not many bands who put it all out there and take chances every night. No other band would pull something like Fishman's major scale solo haha, not even Panic. And Phish pulled crazier shit than this all the time.
I feel sorry for everyone on here bashing these artists for playing music. Isn't that what it's all about, the music, regardless if they are "purists" or not. If I'm not mistaken, I beleive Jerry has even done some non-rock music i.e Old and in the Way, which was some very good bluegrass. Everyone needs to just love music, regardless of genre. If it makes you feel good then great, if not don't listen to it, but don't criticize a band for trying something different.
Can't touch this!!!! Thanks for sharing. My first show was summer '94 and I still follow them. Phish is and always will be the greatest band of all time!
phish are not hippies, more like college music nerds. they have achieved great strides in the realm of improvisational band communication and its just overall interesting and challenging music. i think they definitely have an understanding and profound respect for the beauty and purity of bluegrass and im sure thats why they decided to learn it. so for phish's detractors, please note this and the fact that this performance was right after they first learned bluegrass, check some later ones
phish had the ability to play anykind of music they wanted to, and if you someone doesn't enjoy it then thats fine. but, on the other hand you cannot deny the talent that these four guys had. In my OWN OPINON, Phish, when they are playing together, are the tighest(musically) band of all time.
Anyone who criticizes Phish for playing bluegrass is a complete IDIOT plain and simple. Bluegrass was incorporated into their music WAY before this video anyway. Songs like Uncle Penn were covered by them back in the 80s.
yeah serisouly if you're really insulting this then you're missing the point - they broadened their horizons by learning bluegrass because they like playing it, and it's so clear - it's not a bluegrass concert, it is a phish concert and they took some time out of it to explore a different genre - big deal
bluegrass was founded on the principal of sharing music and having fun. Commercial success means nothing to true bluegrass musicians. To them, like phish, music is about communication and havig fun with the people you're playing with and the audience. Do you really think phish is saying "look at me?" - THE DRUMMER WEARS THE SAME DRESS EVERY NIGHT, the bassist rolls his pant legs up exposing his white high tops, and the guitarist wears pajama pants and looney toones shirts.
for the guy who made the comment about the drugs, actually, it's a pretty shitty and ineffective argument due to the fact that soo many artists that are considered famous for their talent have taken drugs.
I think some of you are massively misinterpreting the purpose of this video..they didn't do this to prove a point to the bluegrass community or to show they were the best bluegrass musicians ever, they were just broadening there minds musically and above all having fun! On that note name ONE other rock group that at the end of a set drops their routine instruments for a banjo and a mandolin and kicks out some bluegrass jams.

Sorry to disappoint, but this sucks. I grew up knee-deep in bluegrass and my dad was a fiddler for 60 years. You can't "learn" bluegrass just because you have money. This is a watered-down "look at me, I'm doing it!" version of bluegrass. Typical audiences never do their homework, either. They think ANYTHING with a mandolin is bluegrass. Bluegrass is more than instrumentation. You had to be there (I wasn't, the greats were). Yuck.
Perhaps the dress might've been a tip off for you that it's not quite as serious a situation as you've interpreted it. If you don't like it, you can always do the polite and southernly thing and go fuck off.
They're just learning bluegrass to play some new songs. the video isnt called "phish the great new bluegrass legend better than everyone else". maybe if you listened to more phish you'd be able to figure out what is going on here.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And maybe if you listened to more bluegrass you'd know this is pure shit. But they are brilliant---brilliant folks NEVER leave home without their heroin. I'm so tired of folks turning mediocre druggie-hippies into heroes.
Oh more of your boring, uninsightful hypocrisy. I didn't realize it was you again replying to me. Please tell us your opinions on the vacuum cleaner playing. Thank you.
you missed the point of what i said completely. waht i was trying to say was that phish fans DONT CARE that this is "pure shit" from a bluegrass purist statement. maybe they are mediocre at bluegrass. but that doesnt matter. and about the drugs, again. no one cares.
Dude, you either get Phish or you don't. If you don't, that is fine, that leaves more seats for the folks who do. When the drummer, wearing a dress plays a basic scale on a mandolin he has no idea how to play, that is funny. The crowd gets that. No one is saying Phish is a great bluegrass band... This was 8 minutes during a 3+ hour show. This shows just how far outside of their comfort zone the band was willing to go, and speaks to their willingness to keep pushing the boundaries.
heroin, not their drug of choice. are you implying that "true bluegrass players" don't use mind-altering substances? just so you know, i don't know anybody that considers enjoying someone's music the same as "turning mediocre druggie-hippies into heroes". do you consider your favorite artists "heroes"?
yeah, if you weren't there you can't enjoy or play it. i understrand that you don't want our chocalate mixed mixed with your peanut butter, but some great things came from crazy experimentation. is the fear exploitation? since this is a FREE video, i hope not. it seems that you're angry that the "true" bluegrass players aren't getting there due. isn't this HELPING that? someone that listens to Phish can hear this and say, "wow, i never knew i liked this" and get into other bands. i know i did!

Exactly - for example, if you go to part 1, you can see them holding up fans to their mics and making a beat with them, then' turning it into a jam.
