Patti - Do you suggest adding potassium in the form of 'live aquarium plant food' occasionally or any other nutrient, for that matter? The reason I ask, my aquarium plants do OK, but they do need an occasional 'boost' from the aquarium plant food which is (0-0-.3). I'm curious how this system has done overall.
yo man i need help what type of bulb should i use for a grow cupbard for only 'one' maybe 2 plants / dnt forget i only want one bulb /like you need one for vege and one for flowering what type isit where you can just grow on one bulb need to no fast!!!!
Great idea for an indoor setup! I have not tried fish waste as nutrients yet and a little hesitant that it may not really be enough to feed the plants well. For those who have tried aquaponics, is it really worth it? I mean, what result do you get from it?
everybody has their own preference but if you've not heard of inducion lamps you should check them out for the high lumens per watt and the spectrums as compared to HID,T5 LED, CFL, etc ck the indagro you tube video or pics on their site. for examle a 400 watt induction with 92,800 lm has a higher VEL then 1000 w HPS saves 600 watts to operate at very little heat with 100,000 hr lamps life at less then 30% lumen loss.
Nice video. The only thing I would point out is that the energy you expend to run your pump and lights is very costly. Instead of putting this inside the the dark house, build a small greenhouse on the south facing side and use manure/wood chip composting for your energy.

This is really an innovative hydroponic system. I may build my own system patterned to this one because I already have a similar metal shelving unit at the basement. Thanks for sharing this great video. I hope to grow my own fresh vegetables with it, too ;)
I saw your video on hydro-gardening.You seem to care about helping the environment and not just out there trying to sell a hydro system, I thought you might be willing to answer a
few of my questions. 1. I have a worm farm/compost bin. Can I use "worm tea" to fertilize? I do not like chemical fertilizers. 2. What types of growing media have you used, wool,
rocks, perlite, STG, etc. which do you prefer? 3. Do you prefer E&F, floating table,
Just love all your videos, you are great and I have learned alot from watching your videos and actually applying them to my own raised bed garden. Thank you!
I plan to deploy Aquaponics on my indoor fish farm as a means to filter out ammonia from the fish water. I deploy big fish tanks of 40 m3 water each. I need to calculate the optimum plant population as well as hydroton quantity needed to achieve perfect filtering of this water quantity. Is there a proven analogy (i.e., plant population and/or hydroton quantity to fish water quantity) that ensures a well-balanced nitrogen cycle? Your assistance would be invaluable.
as soon as she said galvanized -red flags bad bad yes toxic toxic toxic! it leaches into abut everything unless ;your not planning on having kids and a wierd painfull death I guess gavalinized is the way to go
ok, ideas are good but maybe not the "galvanized" planters, galvanizing is hot dip zinc, which is toxic to fish for one, and secondly will lead to heavy metal toxicity to those who consume surviving fish in any meaningful quantity, good concept, just needs better engineering., note to self, don't put anything in an aquaponic system you wouldn't put in your mouth, since that's where all the byproducts of your construction will end up....
It amazes me sometimes how ignorant people can be. WEED grows just like any other plant. and its not fragile at all. It grows like a WEED. All plants need seasonal light cycles. Ammonia is NOT bad if the proper bacteria are introduced into the solution to transform the ammonia into Nitrates. The only things I see wrong with this system are 1. Pearlite tends to jam the pump. 2. Pearlite does not supprt the weight of a plant well A hit or two now and then is great but WEED does not FEED.
weed is fragile.. if you want to have a good harvest you must consider the proper lighting.. summer days is the best lighting conditions for weed.. it must have proper ventilation and too much water is bad.. ants is harmful to weeds..basically they need proper care.. I am not a grower but i read a lot... do you actually know what kind of weed im referring to?? anyway its good having to exchange ideas.. Godspeed!
What is the name of those little fish that they used to gather and catch along the Lake Michigan shoreline (maybe they still do)? They'd bring the whole family and cook them as soon as they caught them. I wonder if they would grow in a tank that small?
no... no it is not. Trust me. I have done experiments to see how badly I could treat some of my plants and I still manage to harvest bud off of them with everything from 0 care all the way to drowning or drying the thing up... It isn't called weed because it sounds funny... it is just that. a natural pioneer species... MrTillson75 know what I'm talking about!
no matter what you grow you should be able to take knowlege from all aspects of indoor gardens from marijuana to veggies its all the same open your mind!
nope.. marijuana is so different from ordinary veggies. it needs attention and accurate lighting.. its like light for the long days of summer and less light for the short days of winter..

HI, Very Nice, But just for your information, Galvanized steel and all other metal planters alter the PH of the soil, and even if your vegetables don't look effected, the metal still will leach into the root system of the plants via watering. I thought you'd give that some thought for the next time :-)
Ok let's say the economy implodes, power is out. I want to have an indoor garden year round to support my family (with grow lights or something similar). What's the best solution? If anyone has any info, send me a private message. I'm searching for plans for a 4x4' indoor garden.
where does the water from the beds go? that timer setup is going to end the whole system before it starts. the grow bed is supposed to act as a boilogical filter running your filter only 3 hours a day will build amonia in the grobed and kill the seedlings, furthermore the nitrogen cycle will never take place and the fish will die
ther eare plenty of videos here that show systems that will and do work. I asked her to show us a follow up to THIS system and she sent me a link to some hydroponic seed starter. so I can assume this did not work, like many of us who have aquaponics systems know this one will not work. want to see aquaponics in action type it in to the search.
the hydroponic seed starter is THIS system , if you watch the starter vid carefully she shows this equipment and she shows the fish tank (but u cant see the fish)
OMG don't follow this ladys advce at all. clear vinal tubbing under a floressent light?nnnnnnnnoooooo! the valve? should be two, one for each grobed. perlite? again no! its too lite and will float around also allows roots to be distrubed more easily, and alows to much light into the root zone and you need more medium than that. the tank is cloudy because the gravel in the tank was not washed and she has to much. if your going to do an educational do your homework first.
Don't use clear tubing as it promotes algae growth. Secondly, the more valves, fittings and elbows you run your water through, the more change you are going to clog your lines from flak. Not enough aeration either. That 12" airstone ain't bubbling enough.
@NOSMOJEFF we manufacture Horticultural LED that doesnt heat at all. We use it for our vertical gardens, vertical farming and many others such as any hydro or aeroponics systems.
It's inexpensive if you are smart, under $100 (an Aerogarden is way more), and who cares if kids put their hands in the fish tank? Mine has a wire mesh like for a reptile cage on it.
Fantastic potential earth science project for school! Probably worth pointing out, that the outlets should be on a gfci (ground fault) as there is lots of water around? Did you by chance, calculate the cost per day/week/month to operate the lights and pump? How great would it be to have school kids figure out all these variables. Thanks Patti!!!
power consumption for fluorescent lights is negligible. same for the pumps especially since they aren't one nearly as much anyway. you only notice a difference in power consumption with HID (high intensity discharge) lights
