You have to think about the MTV demographic. 12-18 year girls. Really funny shows for guys tend to not last long. We'll see what happens with Nitro Circus and Bully Beatdown. There are exceptions obviously (Jackass), but they're just that. The exception, not the rule.

Basically there are just a lot more stupid & lame people (particularly nowadays) who simply don't get or appreciate these kinds of shows vs smart & cool people that do. Shows like this often have a devoted but relatively small and typically underground following and don't end up staying on for longer than 2 or 3 seasons i.e. Wonder Showzen, The Tom Green Show, The Andy Milonakis Show. In the end, MTV is about ratings/money and caters mainly to the stupid, lame and often mediocre i.e. The Hills.
