@Bolewsky Lol how would you even know? Maybe Donnie Marple makes a mean deep dish pizza. But why would you take that so personally? I mean the guy won the GC Championship drumoff. There aren't many guys that could top him, not on Youtube at least.
I dont take it personal AT ALL. It just disconcerts me because it proves what I have been saying all along. Most young drummers believe the mark of a great drummer is based on stick twirling and fitting as many notes as you can into a piece of music. And that is great if you want to be an "entertainer playing drums", which Donnie is. IMO,he is THE BEST at that. I however, choose to be a musician playing drums. If you don't understand the difference, it would benefit you to find it out.
@funky2714 Drummers who embelish frequently in music with dexterity are what we call "creative." Yeah, Donnie does some stick twirling here and there, but that doesn't really impress me to be honest.
On a side note, I'd like to thank you for having a mature conversation on here. That's pretty hard to come by on YT. And you had some cool fills in you vid too.
I am ALL FOR being creative. HOWEVER....It is one thing to be creative, and quite another to create and then never distinguish between "could I" and "should I". For EX...COULD I learn to do Donuts in my new sports car?? Sure I could! SHOULD I do donuts in my new sports car in the open field behind my house?? WHY NOT?? It would be fun! SHOULD I do donuts with my kids in the car on the highway during rush hour?? PROBABLY NOT. Musicianship involves choices made for the music at hand. DISCIPLINE .
You can learn as many words as you can from the dictionary. Even the biggest most impressive words. To be able to put those words together in an intelligent conversation with other people on the TOPIC AT HAND, is a whole other thing. Somone who FORCES big words in a conversation to show everyone he knows them, comes off sounding like a jackass. It must be in line with the subject of discussion. ONLY THEN do people care to hear it. BUT, when talking to yourself, EVERYTHING you say sounds good.
Not to mention there was absolutely no reason to comment "Not as good as Donnie Marple's." None.If you had posted the question asking if yours was as good, then it'd be different. He/she should go comment on Marples video. And I know you don't need me to 'speak' for you. It just sux to read that after enjoying your video ! Kind of a bring down and wholly unnecessary IMHO. Nice job btw !
Your drumming is amazing! The feel and colors you create on the kit is a true artform......
What kind of heads, tuning and muffling do you use ? Does it change from one video to another? Thanks. Looking forward to more of your videos........a true inspiration.
If you like this, you would love Chick Corea. Though you posted this along time ago, I hope you haven't changed your mind and stayed on the metal side.
He is a real master , this is what any drummer student should follow, timming , technique, style, who knows, I would like to play like him someday. Keep posting please.
Hey Fran, did u know that I will be using this song as my audition piece to Berklee. Your video has helped me alot! Thanks alot for the great lessons that you have given me, they have improved me so much. I wish I could go back.
i love this type of musicc. its so relaxing especially with a talented drummer likee yurselff. yu got those toms singinn man the way yu tuned themm! yur playing style has its own style, respectful and pure and yur hi-hat sticking is one to fall in love with. good job man. check my vids out sometime if yu can especially my new one. later. keep drumming! awesome, once again.
mostly who is this song by cause i cannot find it at all i keep searching and all i get is this video,so please tell me where i can get it or who its by,thanxs, and please respond!
dude, he says it right in the description of the video... the book is called "groove essentials: the play along". by tommy igoe. Best book ever in my opinion. I want to record myself too but I'm chicken! :) Great playing Fran!
Well, I might also want to ask that question. I've been forcing myself to play traditional for a while, and whenever I try to use standard, it feels weird and unnatural, but apart from that...However, when you're doing fast fills with the hat and the toms, you do get more control because your arm moves less with traditional because of the direction of the stick. In any case, tell us Fran! Why is it better to use traditional?
I can see your a real dedicated drummer. everything that makes a good drummer is in your plating:Good chops, good feel and most of all you have great control over what you are playing.
Damn, this is incredible, as well as all your Tommy Igoe play along videos, I just got the book recently and I'm trying to work on some of this stuff as well! Your playing is inspiring!
I like to approach playing tunes in various ways. From a standpoint of just blowing over the tunes with chops and aggression and other times from a very solid musical standpoint (my favorite). This take, was the one that I felt did this tune the most justice. Grooving through the second half of the solo section ostinato and laying for the hits was a little more musical. The ostinato is so cool that I felt the listener would more enjoy hearing THAT than me blowing all over the top of it.
No apology necessary bro!! That is the beauty of music. We all bring something different to the table. There is no right or wrong. Music touches us all in different ways and the way we respond to it with the emotions it brings out in us determines the way we choose to compliment it when we play. A world where everyone responds and is affected by music in the exact same way is one I surely DON'T want to live in
Hey. I can tell your from the sound you produce through this song is may I say through a program called "Pro Tools" You have done a nice sound. Work on a bit more of a feel. Other from that. Great playing. Maybe you can come and check my playing out
brilliant mate, this was very well played. Everything flowed nicely, and it was very musically played. This is probably the main reason why I love the "Groove Essentials" book. Well done mate, keep up the good work.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I have been in a weird "slump" for about the past two years. After playing drums for about 20 years I all of a sudden went into this long period of just not wanting to play. I felt awful about it but somehow I just lost interest. I just recently started to get the passion back and now I am back to practicing and playing every day. It's comments like yours that give me the hunger to play and practice even more.
I know how you felt Fran. My dad started me when I was 8 so I've played off and on for almost 56 years. Sometimes the "off" periods lasted several years but there was never a time when I didn't have at least sticks and a pad; now at 64 I'm back into it big time! I hope the bug never dies in you because the world needs good musical players like yourself, long after you're gone some guy will say you inspired him. But you have plenty life left, keep playing and enjoying it!
excellent drumming ..

I'd like to see you "go for it" a little harder.
Lay that shuffle groove down like you mean it.
Also you missed the second half of the drum solo.
I know its a bear to count, but give it a go.
Good work!

I guess I was reflecting the approach that I take when playing it and pushing it off on your performace.
That was wrong...sorry.
