@aztechnine -- Actually, Emily Hay had never heard Art Bears or Henry Cow when she was in this group (of course, Kerman and Grigsby were well familiar with the ReR family). I really don't think Emily sounds like Dagmar at all - she doesn't have that distinctive register-break in her voice, or the accent. People used to compare us to Jethro Tull, just because we had a Flute. These comparisons are mostly superficial.
@aztechnine - By the time of U TOTEM, Kerman had completely absorbed Henry Cow/Art Bears (let's not forget he was also a Gentle Giant fan). I think the first 5 UU's album shows these influences, but later Kerman moved on. I was interested in those groups becuase they were pushing so-called progressive rock into new areas. However, when we formed U TOTEM, we were really thinking about 20th C. composers like Messiaen and Lutoslawski. Could we incorporate their ideas into a rock context?
Oh. This is so wonderful. This track has great emotional value for me. It was very important for me a couple of years ago, when I was in a state of emotional dispair. I even vent so far to print out the lyrics of the song and post it on the board downstairs at my apartment. Everybody probably though I was nuts... ;) It made a lot of sense back then. Now I can put some distance to this, and just enjoy the song. Emily Hay puts out a wonderful version of the song
Rottenhatable, it's good to know I'm not the only person that's "nuts" - I myself often sing this song and other progressive tunes to calm my despair. I remember last summer, just to "get it out", I wrote out all the lyrics to the Art Bears' "Pirate Song", along with some choice Peter Hammill tunes. =D
This is much better than the recorded version... Emily really amplifies its wonder. Much as I love Curt, his voice, I feel was not appropriate for the tone of this tune...
Dear RotaryTotem, thank you for your explanation as to the circumstances of your recording. However, your flute is very expressive and due to the inherent high pitch above the other instruments it was still clear and a joy to hear. Thank you.
I'm glad you liked it! Check out Emily Hay's solo work as well as albums with U Totem, Motor Totemist Guild, Otherparts, I Am Umbrella, Vinny Golia and others. Cheers!
This concert was recorded in 1990 by an amateur using a built-in microphone on a hand-held VHS recorder from the balcony of a nightclub in Montreal. I didn't even know it was being recorded until I was handed a tape after the concert. I was happy to have a document of the concert, but the quality of the recording is something over which I had absolutely no control.
no i love this music and i love how it pays homage to Desperate Straights and In Praise of Learning

Beautiful, she sound little close to Dagmar Krause in some sounds of voices.

Adding to this: Curt Wilson's vocals on the orginal version was fantastic!

Great flute. Voice and flute seem to be overshadowed by percussion and accompaniment.Better balance needed. Overall, a good performance. Keep it up.
