The reason behind General Hummel having an M1911A1 while the other marines carry M9s is because Hummel is a Vietnam veteran, an older marine, his military issue sideram back in the day was a 1911(Colt .45 may refer to many pistols), while the younger marines were issued the Beretta M9, since the M9 took the torch from the 1911 during the 80s, and became the standard issue sideram. This being said, his 1911 looks to be nickel plated, so it may be an honorary pistol given to him.

My only gripe with this scene is Major Baxter missing at point blank range. Ok he clipped him in the shoulder, but man you would expect a guy like him to get a clean headshot

Screw Nicolas cage, this movie was about Ed Harris to me. General Hummel, most bad ass antagonist since Darth Vader. "You're talking to a General soldier, Maintain discipline", best line from the movie.
