I've been listening to the recent versions of this song from the 2011 reunion tour and quite frankly, they stink. THIS is the definitive version of Heartbeat City live. In the recent performances Ric doesn't even play rhythm, Elliot is just going through the motions and Greg is left to carry the song single-handedly. It's not just Ben's absence that makes the recent performances lackluster. Watch this one if you really want to see Heartbeat City as it should be performed live.
i was 13yrs old in summer 85 during live aid and it was just a buzz![taking into consideration i was living in the country].i missed this performance and to transfer the studio version to live version is just jaw dropping-tanx4post.just thinking about 80s brings tears to my eyes.
Whoops, in my reply to soulasylummeatpuppet, meant to say Ben Orr sang lead on most of MY favorite songs by Cars, not most of their hit songs. Do not want to slight Ric Ocasek!
As a HUGE Cars fan, I have to recommend this performance over the 2011 live performances of this song. Maybe it's because Ben's gone or maybe they just haven't played together for a quarter of a century. The recent live versions of Heartbeat City here on YouTube are...well...really lame. They're still a great band and I love Move Like This.
Disappointed. It's like this whole video was perfoemed by a four man band. The cameras zooming in on everyone except Benjamin Orr. Wtf? Why was he avoided?
@outacontrol41 they did the same thing in a lot of there videos from the 80's i wish someone would explain why he was pushed into the background.he was the best thing they had in the early days.makes no sense at all.
@soulasylummeatpuppet I agree with you that not spotlighting Ben Orr in their videos is a mystery! Why not? Being a casual Cars fan, I bought a DVD set few yrs. ago and was surprised to see that it was Orr that sang lead vocal on most of their hit songs AND wrote a lot of them. I like Ric, Elliot & others & appreciate their contributions and that's what made them a great group, but maybe media & director of their videos felt that Ric Ocasek was the mastermind behind the Cars?
It's so catchy, at first listen i said "this is a little to pop for me", but then the catchieness kicked in and i find myself listening to it a sixth time. Even when the Cars did make the transistion from new wave hard rock and power pop to pop-rock and synthpop I still find the Easton breakdown solos worth all the wait of their cheesy MTV pop-rock, They were just fine as a oriented rock band. I hate MTV. "MTV killed the music star!"
I must have played the Heartbeat City tape about a thousand times in my new Honda Civic CRX back in 1984. Good times. I remember Live Aid being a fun day too.
Some Idiots are posting on the Drive video of this concert that the cars are not really playing and that they are lipsyncing. Those idiots must have been raised on Justin Beiber and Timberlake and Britney and other Disney creations as well as U2 ripoffs like coldplay. They cannot believe that a group could play live so well and so good. Such idiots need to be educated on the 80s.
how could anyone say that they were lipsyncing, 85 was the very first time i heard this songand it got me into the cars and the gone but not forgotten benjamim orr R.I.P. brilliant group nothing to touch them now.
@yesimoverhere Clearly the lead vox and instruments are live. But the backing vox sound too overproduced to be live and are probably a backing tape. They are definitely playing to a click track. That's why the drummer is wearing headphones and why the KB player can hit one key with one finger and get perfectly timed arpeggios coming out of his instrument. It's a great song though, by a great band!
@GrinchXP Be silent a vegetable. Even in the USSR we in the mid-eighties listened to them and loved, if you don't like that don't listen. Plywood it or not personally to me without a difference - a song good and memoirs on those times who was even better after all than many of those then near to me already isn't present in the live
@GrinchXP Clearly the lead vox and instruments are live. But the backing vox sound too overproduced to be live and are probably a backing tape. They are definitely playing to a click track. What a time it was, truely a time lost forever and a time I'll never forget and a time that will always be a part of me. Those who are sad about times gone by, let it go, don't let life get in the way of what is important, it can still be as good as it once was, you just gotta make it so. Tought to do I know, but it is doable, try it. I promise it will work out.
I agree with everyone people !! Great crowd , great song , great band and i also whould like to travel back then if that was possible...Thank god there where these kind of people that made such great great music that will be the same in everyones ears for ages !!!!! So wonderfull to hear again and again.Thank you, thank you....!!!!!!
I find it just too ironic how judas priest came right before the cars, why, well one, those are my two favorite bands of all time, and two they come from different sides of rock
Got my Cars tickets for the May 10 concert in Seattle! Gonna meet up with a buddy from High School I haven't seen since, well, HS (1985). Gonna effin' rock!
Is Rick Ocasec Howard Sterns long lost brother from the past? Just kidding I have always dug this bands sound and style and have bought their solo music too. I hear the new music is great it's just too bad that Ben wasn't still around. His voice was truly unique and special and will be greatly missed by fans of the Cars.
@catcage, that day the person mixing for all groups, screwed up all the levels. I was all messed up for several seconds. I know because I heard it live as I was there and remember it. 20 some years later the recordings re-emerged and somehow the problem was "magically" fixed. And you're hearing them live, but that little sections mixing got repaired. I suspect editing removed the first line. But you are right, ric ocasek is a genius. (and yes, that's how it's spelled)
@driedfreeze Yes, sorry for my English, I'm from Argentina and I'm a fan of the cars ... I have not said as criticism, only as showing that the genious also have errors ... bands like that will never exist! and if it is Ocasek ... only to write fast
In 1978 I had the pleasure of spending a day with the band sitting around the pool at the Whitehall Hotel in Houston, Tx. An awesome day. I watched Ric write song after song like he was writing letters to his mom. I was invited to come back the next night and ride with the band to the concert but went with friends. I did get to sit with the sound and light engineers in the crowd and saw the playlist and knew every song they were going to perform. What a memory. They were all great.
Now that you mention it, there is some similarity in Ric's and Lou Reed's voices. Both are 80's icons. Lou made something of a comeback singing on The Killers's song "Tranquilize" but I don't think he made much of a contribution. In fact, the song may have been better without him.
C'est vrai qu'il n'y aura peut-être jamais mieux que les années 80,et les Cars resteront pour toujours à mon avis un des meilleurs groupe du monde .Excellents musiciens et chanteurs. Et surtout magnifique Benjamin . Repose en paix
Thanks to all for posting all the Live Aid set of the Cars. I can only remember the uk's bbc showing 2 songs of the set. Showed more coverage in the uk of the usa live aid with a man on stage throwing a freisbee into the crowd. thanks again
If you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Awesome video. I had the pleasure of spending a day with the band in Houston in 1978. Around the hotel pool I watched Ric, sitting in his lawn chair, writing song after song like he was writing letters home. Amazing. Enjoyed everyone of the guys and crew. They invited me to ride with them to the show the next night and then sit with the mixing board during the show. I knew the song lineup and enjoyed just spending the time with them all. God bless Ben. He is missed very very much.
Hey man, we ARE getting old. I know all the hype about a possible reunion and the video clip on their Facebook page. And of coure all of us Cars fans are extatic. But this performance is the summit, the pinnacle. I would love to see a reunion, but I don't think they'll ever do better than this song in this place.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Great watching these clips again. The Cars were so ultra cool, contained and in such complete control. Real pro's.This show was soooooooo much better than Woodstock. Simply no comparison as far as music festival shows go.
I remember watching The Cars doing this on Live Aid with my wife in our basement apartment. Can it really be a quarter of a century? Damn, I'm feelin' old........
Did you see Ben looking over at Greg and smile near the end of the song? These fellows are just having a good time and making great music. Let's see...for about the hundredth time I'll say it, they just don't make music like that any more.
Fellow fans, I found a report on The Cars Facebook that states that there is some talk about nominating them for Rock and Roll hall of Fame induction. I'm sure we all agree it is long overdue. I tried to create a link to the page but I think it's not allowed on Youtube. So go to cars Facebook page. You will find the thread about halfway down the page. You'll find the link to the petition there. Let's make this happen!
gosssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I WANT TO CRY TAKE ME BACK IN TIME PLIZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH SHITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT MAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey guys, the last "reunion" of sorts with The New Cars was a flop, but please give it another try. We're all old men now, but the music is still great. I'll fly across the country and pay whatever to see you live.
It was great! Gods blessings, always, ~ ♫♪ Vit

"It's getting closer - out of sight" Great lyrics - almost as good as their line...

@tigershoot I know its tragic, so much tallent =( The Cars just arent the Cars without him. =(
But it really annoys me that the camera (especialy during the 80s) just ignored bassists even if they are as tallented as Benjamin =(

@relztrah I never caught that before! Bejamin and Rick... So amazing. No, they don't make music like that any more. They just don't.

Hey guys, the last "reunion" of sorts with The New Cars was a flop, but please give it another try. We're all old men now, but the music is still great. I'll fly across the country and pay whatever to see you live.
