This is a great cover of a great song. I love Kirsty's original, I love Tracey's hit cover (which includes Kirsty's "bay-bee!"), and I love this one. It's all good, folks.
Nice version, and I respect others comments here - but in my opinion the original artist (Kirsty in this case) understands the song, and its my opinion that they usually sing in best. Kirsty was original - RIP my love
I adore Kirsty's original, I really like Tracey Ullman's version, but Katrina added something that shows the real potential of the song. Which - in a way - is an hommage to Kirsty MacColl. And that's why I bring up a toast to Kirsty MacColl, who would have gone very far, if destiny had allowed her to.
I didn`t know this existed. This puts a new spin plus seriousness in a old comedy song. Even so I love Tracy Ullman`s version, this version holds it`s own as well. Thanks for posting this.
This is a stunning version of the song. I have loved this since Kirsty Maccoll wrote it in 1979, through the Maccoll directed version by Tracey Ullman, and I never thought I'd hear a modern version. Katrina has done a lovely job, I didn't realise she did this type of singing - much better than her pop stuff, in my opinion.
arguing over which version is best is silly. each version is a different and legitimate ARRANGEMENT of the song. each has it's merits and different people will like them for different reasons....it's a great song...it works in just about EVERY version i've seen here on youtube. katrina does a beautiful job.
This is a very nice version. To compare it to Tracey Ullman or Kirsty MacColl is unfair as this song is written in a different format. This is the type of song meant to be played for a couple as they snuggle before a fireplace before going to the bedroom. The other versions are pop versions. Kirsty would have been honored to hear the lyrics that she wrote being sung in such a beautiful format.
Sorry for your situation. I hope that you resolve it soon.
I would also like to add that this is a new direction for the singer. When she was younger, she had a more energetic beat in her songs. Now she is older, and has a slower, mellowed musical beat. A lot of rock singers are making a second career in this manner, and it's really neat.
it will take awhile for me to fix these emotions. basically, i'm paying the price for past mistakes. too bad this "friend" would give me a pass. anyways, great tune!
Its always easier to sing material that someone else wrote and sang. The Original is always the best because it took the most effort and creativity; not someone else who says "Oh, I can improve on that song"
I encountered this song in the 80s, when Tracey Ullman pulled off her version. I liked it, I bought the record. I later discovered the original Kirstey McColl, and I still adore it. Now i make acquaintance of Katrina's version, and I must say, she's got it right.
BTW, Katrina does a perfect cover of the Animal's "Gotta get out of this place".
The idea of "art" is simple. .personal interpretation. An apple in one person's eye is an orange in another's. Katrina doesn't ruin this song. In my view, her clear and distinctive vocals just make a beautiful song even more so. That's art. I'm often reminded of Tom Gray, an Atlanta artist who wrote "Money Changes Everything". The song was going nowhere until Cyndi Lauper recorded it. Now Tom is happily cashing those royalty checks. A GOOD song will always be just that. Good.
@mwolf49 good job you hit the nail on the head I like tracy's version because it is the one I grew up with but this is a wonderful interprtation of just a truly great song
A beautiful love song! Me n´my love are going to marrie this spring and this song coluld tell the story about us. Guss what song we will have at our wedding?
damn this song was ruined! It's meant to be an upbeat bubblegum type song...and now this version sounds like some emo heroin rock version...give tracey her song back...
Since when is this song "Traceys" ? Would you mean Tracey Ulman? The dodgy 80s comedian who never wrote it and did a crappy cover of it. Indeed Kirsty MaColl's version is better than this one, but it isn't an upbeat bubblegum anything...
Don't think anyone is disputing that.... but to criticise somethign on the basis that it is not like the original, when in fact that person is not aware of what the original is, then my comment becomes valid. i.e. The criticism was levelled that this song should be "bublegum pop" like "the original, with the misapprehension that Tracey Ulman's version was the original..... which it wasn't. I realise that my comment was viewed out of context, as it was a response to an earlier comment.
Keep in mind Kirsty MacColl was 16 when she wrote They Don't Know, and it's a genre song eg; Girl Group. Tracey's version was in line with her comedy as well as Kirsty's sense of humor. This version is so unexpectedly sweet! I'm so glad I found it here!
Wow. That was perfect. Finally, a version of this song at the right tempo and with the consideration the lyrics deserve. Kat is consistently amazing and a gifted musician.
This is beautiful - tracey's version was cheesey, kirsty's was badley produced - this is understated, straight to the point & totally sublime............
I have never heard this version before--BUT---how very simple, clear and emotional by being UNemotional--just very matter of fact in stating what IS---a situation exists that has become too difficult to just "dump in the bin" because others might deem it--possibly rightly--as madness or unsuitable. Try telling that to your own mind when it is overridden by your heart!--who wants to be sensible and safe anyway?--when a little madness can enrich the life we are allotted???--K xxxxxxxx
This is so true to life for me and a lovely version of an alredy great song from the much missed Kirsty. Thanks for posting it fabbyboy and I hope my friend K loves it as much as I do.

Well done FabbyBoy for posting this video of a song by one of my all time favourite(and now sadly missed) female artists sung by my other all time favourite female artist. It's just fantastic. I had no idea Katrina had covered this song until now! Thanks!
This song stands the test of time. It ranks alongside the work of the most famous pop songwriters - Lennon and McCartney couldn't have done a better job.
This is a great cover of a great song. I love Kirsty's original, I love Tracey's hit cover (which includes Kirsty's "bay-bee!"), and I love this one. It's all good, folks.
