When I was younger I had insecurities with my hair because I was looked at different on school I was the only one I knew of who had natural hair I loved it . It was long and well defined but I let what people say affect me I cried to my mom to relax my hair now here I am 11 years later after since my first relaxer and I regret it soooooo much now its gonna take a while to get back my natural hair and pattern and I have heat damage and slot of breakage :( but I'll just try to remember it will be
I can totally relate to u! My daughter is my inspiration for going natural too. I love her hair n her curls and I was like, I wonder would we have the same curl pattern. She's 16 months and her hair is 7 inches in the back n 8 in the top. I want her to stay natural so I figured that I should be a role model to her. As parents we have to lead by example!!
Nice video. You and ur dd have beautiful hair. be careful blowdrying and flat ironing a lot u could end up with heat damage. A lot of people end up having to transition a 2nd time. I bc'd but not because I didn't care about my hair. I was over relaxed hair and ready to embrace the real me. I take good care of my hair in 3 years from inch to almost bsl. mine looks like ur dd's hair.
It is so nice to hear your story. We have the same story. Our mother's relaxed and their business caused us to stretch, our daughters hair inspired us, and I like to be very patient with my hair. It is very nice to see your success! Congratulations! I hope to celebrate with you in the years to come.
I am transistioning again after 4 years. My 11 daughter transistioned two years ago (her choice) and she is my inspiration! When she was around 4 she constantly questioned why her hair was not like mine (relaxed) :(. Glad I came across this video. I just found out I am expecting so now I definately have double motivation! I will be 13 months post when I deliver.
I am thinking of transitioning from relaxed to natural and glad to hear that you don't have to do the 'big chop'. I don't want to lose my length. However it seems that natural hair takes up so much time and money in maintanence and styling. I doubt if I have the patience or time to spend 4 hours on my hair. I've worn some braid out styles and I like those because there is less heat on my hair, but I'm still experimenting. Curly hair styles is more drying than wrapping relaxed hair.
I have decided to transition also from Relax to Natural, your video was a positive and inspiring video for me as well. Thanks for the words of encouagement :~)
I've only been on my HHJ for two months and I'm currently SL... Can you do an updated video of the products you use/used to help you stretch to natural.
Your hair is beautiful and healthy and you are transitioning. :-) We don't need relaxers to have beautifyul hair. I wish my mother took care of my hair rather than packing grease in it and bringing me to the hairdresser.
This is a great and inspiring video. I knew I was too vain to BC the first time I went natural back in 2006. I just got my relaxed ends trimmed as normal until they were all gone. It took a little over 3 years total. I LOVED how healthy my hair looked and felt once it was all natural. I also wore my hair straight 99% of the time with a shampoo and flat iron once a week, and wrapping EVERY night. What I DIDNT love was how quickly my hair would sweat out just from stepping outside. :(
What products do you use on your daughters hair? My 2 year old daughter inspired me to transition too. Having to learn her hair motivated me to want to learn my own natural texture.
Thank you girl soo much for these videos. I've started my transition about 1 year ago but was still at a loss. Until a few days ago I was online doing research on how to grow my hair and restore health. Your journey has inspired me. My hair is 3b3c and was long while growing up. My twenties were'nt too forgiving of the many hair mistakes I've made. Now @ 31 I have learned to baby it :D (I thought I was spoiled) I have soaked up fantastic tips from you and I will be watching faithfully!! :)
You are an inspiration. Nina - the coconut oil didn't work for me did I do something wrong? It made my hair hard and brittle. Let me know your thoughts.
Hey gorgeous hair....I left a comment on another video that was older so was thinking you might see this first...I am transitioning too for about 16 mos. approx. now but the only problem I am seeing is the humidity when it comes to straightening/flat ironing now. I am in FL and in 100% humidity!!! lol, thanks in advance for any suggestions!!!!!
You know that you dont have to cut off the relaxer... trimming the ends little by little will remove all of it sooner than you think... its what I did... Just some advice...
Nina, thank you! My hair hangs below my bra strap, relaxed and very healthy. My last relaxer was 4/29/11. I feel called to journey back to natural and maintain my very long healthy hair. Would you do me a favor and do a review of Komaza hair products?
Its a beautiful thing youre doing 4 your daughter.the way a young girl sees her hair rlly affects her self esteem even when shes much older. my mom gave me a perm when i was 5! and ive always thought my natural hair was ugly even though b4 th perm it was thick strong and 2 my waist. i completely natural now though and ive embraced my natural hair. i <3 it and constantly get compliments. its definitely made my hair healthy and stong again. and its grown more in these 18 mos than since i was 5
Thank you for doing this for us...I keep stretching up to 5 months and then relaxing because I get discouraged. I'm almost 4 months right now and starting to get irritated with my new growth.....especially my front edges!! I'd love to get to know my natural texture, but I feel like it isn't cooperating with me now, what's gonna happen if I go totally natural?
You are such an inspiration Nina. My daughter is my motivation also. She is 8 1/2 and has never been relaxed and appears to have a 3c texture also. I too want to help her embrace her beautiful hair. She would also ask me to flat iron her hair so it could be "just like mine" and i hated that she thought straight hair was the form of "pretty" hair. I initially planned to do a big chop once my new growth was at an acceptable length but thanks to you i see that It is possible to transition to end!
I wish I found your channel 6 months ago...I was 9 months stretched and I lost my mind trying to detangle so I waited a week and put a lite relaxer on it. Now after watching your video I have the courage to continue my 5 month stretch!!! BTW ....I subbed!! :) Keep up the good work!!!!
thanx for the informative videos........ i plan to stretch/transition indefinitely now. absolutely positively. knowing long term transitioning w/ regular trims can be done is inspiring. i don't luv the big chop (i've done it b4) never again. are you worried about heat damage? how often do you wear your hair straight? i hope u do more videos soon! healthy hair, body, mind, spirit and good luck everyone!
why are there 11 dislikes on this video. This is such a positive and inspiring video. Thank you so much! For all those 11 idiots who disliked this video, you're a MORON!
Hi Nina, I love your videos, you have inspired me to co wash once a week when I was much like you dreding to wash and so I only washed every six to eight weeks, and I relax about every 4 to 5 months, I think I can strecth longer after listening and watching you, you videos are tasefully done, and your daughter is precious, thanks for sharing and I hope you keep sharing, God bless you!
I started transitioning under the same circumstances. I was stretching my relaxers from 6 to 12 weeks. During my 2nd stretch, my gramma wasn't available when it was time to relax so I decided to wait until the next one. One day during the 4th month I was like "dealing with my new growth isn't hard and it's actually kinda pretty. what do i need a perm for?" By the next scheduled touch-up, I decided not to relax anymore.
Great vid, Ur daughter is beautiful and has alot of hair too, My daughter's hair is mid back length as well I just hate the shrinkage. Both of our hair is naturally curly, I damaged my hair by flat ironing it so I cut the damaged hair off last year. i'm hoping to reach ur length within the next 2yrs. Wish me luck ; )
I am glad that you did this video. I thought that I would have to do the BC and I didn't want to do that. Know that I have found out that I can continue on without the BC is great. I have been transitioning since Dec. 2010. And I am slowly learning the different styles I can do to my hair.
Hola Nina, Mate I am catching up on your hair vids and OMG you, go gurl!!! Your hair is gorgeous. I was on Lista showing my coz, my page and your hair esp. We just watch this vid. and she is amazed... I told her women of color can have long beautiful hair. And No you don't have to be mixed-LOL... I am so proud to be your hair sista and you are def. my one of my HAiRoes-LOL. I am almost to one of my first goals and thats BSL. I have an inch to 1.5 inches to grow... catch online keep it movin
I like your hair i have been watch your video all the time and watch hair your hair get long and long how long did you take to get they keep up the good work !!! rena2513
Please respond. I know I'm posting the same question but I don't know whether you look at your older posts. I'm sry.
My braidout @ 14 months post is good until it starts to revert though I take out the braids once my hair is dry. How do I keep out the humidity to make decent braidouts?
I went natural for the same reason you did. My 3 year old daughter inspired me. I've never even thought of putting a relaxer in her hair. Her hair is strong and her texture is beautiful. One day I asked myself, "Why am I relaxing my own hair?" Then I decided to kick the creamy crack and go natural. Its one of the best decisions I've ever made! Thank you Breezy! That's my daughter, my inspiration. Nina your hair is beautiful as well. So is your daughter's hair. Good luck on your journey! :-)
You are a hair inspiration! If I would've learned to take care of the two textures I had, I wouldn't have done the Big Chop!!! Looking at your video has breathed new life into me. Many blessings to you & your daughter always.
That's a beautiful gift that you are giving your daughter. Teaching her how to love her natural hair. It's great to be able to wear your hair straight and curly. It's also beautiful that you want to share your transitioning experience with the Youtube community. Good luck and I will refer folks to your channel who wants to transition without the B/C. BTW have you tried the tangle tweezer for detangling.. it's great for my hair. Good luck again.
I am glad to see someone else other than me who is going natural to encourage their daughter to love their hair wether it's straight or curly. We have the type of hair where we have a choice, and its ours to make. My daugthers now 5 hair is very similar to your daughter. I also want her to love her hair. Unlike you I did not learn my hair. Last permed July-08, I transitioned with and still wear tree-braids. July marks my 3rd yr . With your inspiration I may attempt doing more with my hair.
only thing i hate about you is you only spend like 3 seconds in the mirror after :[ girl you are BEAUTIFUL!! And so is the hair!! Spend a couple minutes in the mirror showing off the finished product! LOL
My mom had relaxed hair for as long as I can remember. When she told me I had to get mine relaxed when I was 13, I went kicking and screaming, lol. Your daughter and I actually have the same texture and in my family, that's considered "bad hair." So, she made me relax it. Your daughter has gorgeous hair and by the time she's *cough* our age *cough* all this natural hair negativity will be a thing of the past.
so glad to see this video..I will refer my subs to you because I get alot of questions about transtioning and I didnt start my vids here on YT till I was 2.5 yrs into my transition ..thanks again for this
I am on Hairlista and I just inboxed you about texlaxing my daughter... I am so not going to do it now... I have been natural before and gave up - You have given me new breath in my journey and the strength to be the role model for my daughter that she needs. I don't want my decision to be relaxed to influence her decision to be natural any more. Thanks again!
I tried to transition my hair and i went like 6 months with no relaxer but my hair broke off really bad so i said forget it and i was pissed because i lost length too so i broke down and got a relaxer
My Daughter was my sole inspiration as well & Thanks to the Natural Hair Community I began to fully understand what I was doing was right all along (unlike when you have a relaxer or, as I've heard one say, a press and curl girl, when you're natural, water is the key. Thanks for Sharing :O) Your hair is Gorgeous ♥
Awesome video. This is exactly why I went natural. My daughter was my 1st inspiration too. Even though she is mixed, her curly hair inspired me. I love your daughters hair and yours. Gorgeous mom & baby. HHG!!
Amazing video. It's so true that little girls want to be like their mommies because that is usually their She-Ro that they look up to! I think it's awesome that you are teaching her to love her texture!!!
Question: What flat iron do you use? I am looking for one with ceramic plates and there are a lot on the market? Also, what heat protector do you use (if any)?
Awww that's sweet that ur daughter was ur inspiration! :) What u did for her has increased her self~esteem 200%. Wish the world had more selfless mommas like u.Great video ^_^!!
Wow. I have had natural hair for 1yr and 5 months and the main reason I went natural is because my 9 yr old daughter started saying she wanted straight hair like me. I want her to embrace her hair and in turn I embraced mine. I absolutely love it.
Nina, a suggestion for your next video: Can you use either kinky curly custard or miss jessie's products using a diffuser? I've seen similar videos, but most of them are on fully natural hair. I want to see what it will look like on transitioning hair. Thanks in advance.
Do you sleep on the back of your hair? Perhaps it is getting rubbed more? Do you wear your hear down alot because the collar of shirts can rub the back of the hair alot too. Pampering that section more may be helpful. Scalp massage, Apply conditioner to that section first so it stays on longer...My favorite, Castor Oil!!! ;-) It really helped in my problem areas
How long post relaxer are you in this video? What are you doing to prevent the relaxed ends from breaking off? My hair seems to shed more when im in need of a relaxer so im afraid of transitioning.
Peace, I'm really happy to hear your reason for transitioning. Setting better examples of self-love and self-acceptance is what is necessary to instill into younger women and children. A lot of black women have self-hate issues, and much of it is manifested with their regard to their own hair. Your hair will always naturally tell you want it is suppose to be; at least every 4 to 8 weeks :oD
Let's stop the Chemical Warfare on our hair and culture.
I love your video's. Being relaxed I am always looking for video's with someone like me. Thanks so much for your help. I've found the products my hair loves and i'm growing long and strong. Again Thank You !
I discovered your vids about a month ago and they are very informative. I am going through my own hair journey and hope to have as much success as you have had. Have a great 2011.
I'm 7months post relaxer right noww andd im thinking of gettin a relaxerr but im not really suree i want to cut my hair like rihanna used to have with that mohawk butt if im not going to cut my hair i'm going definentlyy natural
Congrats on your Transition. I wanted to recommend that if you plan on transitioning longterm that you should make sure you condition condition condition!!! && I dont just mean rinse out condition I mean deep condition on a weekly basis and I would and be mindful of heat damage from flatironing and blowdrying as you dont want to incur breakage or heat train you natural hair which could alter the texture and cause your transition to be a bit longer as the curl pattern may not return w/heat.
OMG YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME I HAD THE RIHANNA HAIR CUT FOR A WHILE BUT AFTER WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS I HAVE TRANSITIONED INTO A SEW-IN SO THAT MY PERM CAN GROW COMPLETELY OUT AND GROW SO THAT I CAN START WEARING MY NATURAL HAIR. I CAN NOT WAIT UNTIL MY HAIR GROWS A LITTLE BIT LONGER SO THAT I CAN START MY JOURNEY OF THE ALL NATURAL
To relax or not to relax is, I believe, every sistah's choice and should not be made to feel bad about it. Its not about being ashamed of my natural hair texture, its about me being able to manage it....aka....shrinkage! I've always been so slow when it came to my touch ups, waiting almost a year but at the same time I wasn't taking care of my hair either. Since watching Nina and others I've learned how to really take the time to care for my hair by developing my own hair care regimen.
Hi, I wanted to know what product you use to moisturize your ends to help keep them from getting stringy and not have any spaces? I have been transitioning for 6 months now and I just straightened my hair and saw that my ends are stringy, almost an inch. Their are spaces in my hair so I have to get a trim. I have only straightened my hair 3 times in the past 6 months. Any product recommendations to help with my ends stay fuller?
wow this is inspiring i am 17 and i am 4 months post relaxer..ive been relaxed my whole life cause of my mother then they messed up my hair and didnt comb it for a while lol and it was too curly to untangle they did a big chop and then relaxed again so my hair grew with the relaxer i want my curly natural hair again it used to be super long passed my hips
Hi Nina, love you videos hun..just wanted to know have you done the bantu knots since your transition and if so how were the results conmpared to your relaxed hair?
Nina, you are inspiring me to stretch for as long as possible. I usually relax every 11-13 weeks, but starting with the new year I will aim for 4 month stretches and then 6 months. You are my favorite YT hair guru, God bless and keep up the great work!
Your hair is beauuuutiful! Im relaxed and happy but I totally support your transition, that's the beauty of being a black woman...you can do what the heck u wanna do and still be flyy!! Thumbs up
WOW! I love that your transition to natural hair is for your daughter. This is truly a mother's love. And for that, I'm a new subscriber. Be blessed and have a wonderful holiday season!!!
your hair looks great. i noticed when i was transitioning that my new growth was darker too. now that i'm fully natural, i like the darkness, since my mom would never let me color my hair dark lol.
Thank you for posting this! I don't believe we have to BC to grow our hair naturally! It is a journey but it is definitely worth it! I love your videos keep it up!

There was a recent video of a woman who was telling her daughter her natural hair was beautiful however her daughter didn't buy it 100% because she never saw her mom's natural hair (google: reporter going natural). Actions speak louder than words. I think a lot of our youth don't know they have a choice. If they're being taught that their natural hair needs to be covered like most celebs and women who they see daily are doing, then they only see one option. Congrats on going natural :)
Just Beautiful! You are so sweet & honest! Glad I'm subscribed to you. You are inspiring me to re-enbrace my natural hair again. Thank you for showing us this can be done by not doing the BC. I've been a subscriber for almost a year now and have seen all of your videos, would it be possible for you to do a list of products you find that have helped your 'natural' hair? My daughter is natural and I'm looking for good products to use & use on my my NG if I decide to transistion. God Bless! *~*
You are gorgeous! The hair is amazing & your daughter is stunning! Question: Since you tend to wear your hair straight often, if in the future your daughter asks if she can straighten her hair to make it "bone straight" like mommy's (in admiration, much like you admired your mom for her straight hair), would you let her or encourage her to keep wearing her curls?

if my hair looked like that i wouldnt want to chop my hair off either. you should enjoy your hair you worked hard and love the reasons your transitioning. thank you taking the time to make these videos my hairlista sis.~classylady
thanks so much! u definitely are an inspiration to those of us transitioning without the BC. I am now 5 months post my relaxer and I am loving the journey as well. My only question: Is the detangling process different for everyone. Because thus far that has not been an issue for me. My hair isn't as long or full as yours yet however...its about two/three inches above my bra strap and i would say the new growth thus far is probably 3c and 4a at nape. Should i spend more time on that process.

Loves this vid! Your reasoning is on point! & ur daughter is gorgeous! Such a cutie. I'm on the fence on transitioning, but i'm still taking the time to learn my hair. I'm currently 16 weeks post and my hair is truly playing me right now! LOL! I leave the house with a bang and get back home with a afrobang! But i'm still hanging in there! Thanks for the updates girl, truly inspiring.
I too was a long-term transitioner!!! If you haven't worked with your natural texture for years!! I highly suggest woman to learn to care for their hair through transitioning before chopping off relaxed ends!
btw....I love your channel! I've suggested it to friends who are considering going natural!!! Keep up the good work!!!
Great vid. It's so nice to see someone who is able to embrace/appreciate their in any state...relaxed, natural or transitioning. Thanks for sharing your inspiring journey.
Thank you for taking the time to help a sister out! I am thinking about going for the stretch but as soon as the 3 month period hits, when it's time for a relaxer, i experience lots of shedding and/or breakage. Did you experience this around the time you were due for your relaxer?
OMG girl!!!!keep up the good work. You keep inspiring me every single day. I am currently 8mths post relaxer. I have to say I did not know I was tender headed lol. Pray for me !!!!:-)
thank you again and please please can you do a video on how you do your eyebrows?

Your hair is very pretty! I'm 15months into my transition & I plan on cutting the rest of my relaxer in 2012 also. And my hair is a little bit pass bra strap length:-) I feel the same way you do about your hair. I love my length & I don't want to big chop because I've always had long bra strap lenth hair.
Thank you for your words and advice Nina. It is refreshing to see someone on youtube is going natural without chopping! I am relaxed and am no where near going natural. However seeing someone "like me" transitioning gives me hope that one day I can. You giving us the knowledge "tools" we need to one day start our own transition. Keep up the good work. God bless you and yours
I love your channel & I completely feel the same way you do eventhough I BC'd. My daughter is my inspiration. I'm completely natural, did the BC in October & have a TWA & loving it. My daughter who is 3 has 3b-3c hair, totally different texture than mine, but I know as long as I embracen my hair, build healthy strong hair & take care of HERS the best way I can, she will thank me in the future. I wouldn't want any decision I make to affect her at all.
i've been transitioning for over a year now but i've been getting braids so that i don't have to deal with my hair, every time i take out the braids i just feel so helpless trying to wash and detangle my hair, i dread taking my braids out and dealing with my own hair lol, i really don't know what to do i know that i do not want to go back to relaxed, but i've been thinking to go get it pressed though hopefully that helps me a bit
You have BEAUTIFUL hair, and you are such an inspiration for anyone looking to transition!! I stopped relaxing because I was paranoid about them and being pregnant. When I had a daughter, she was my inspiration to STAY natural. Now I have three of them, and there is DEFINITELY no turning back now!! LOL. You are THE transitioning GURU!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your videos!!!
You are the reason i begun a HJ, although i decided not to go natural because my is to hard to tame. I also learned how to stretch my relaxer from you and i stretch for 4months(and i do so by just wearing my hair curly. And everytime i see your hair i smile and i have faith that even if i relax i know as long as i stay on top of managing my hair i can achieve the length you have. Now it might take forever but i'm patience enough to wait. Thank you so much Nina. God Bless you and your daughter.
First, your daughter is sooo cute, she looks just like you. Secondly, thank you for your honesty regarding your choice. Good luck with the rest of your transition and Happy Holidays.
As always great video Nina...I am following your routine to the t...When you big chop then I will big chop. I am 13 months post relaxer. I appreciate all the information that you share with us...Thank you so much!!!
Yes, it is possible. I have been transitoning for the second time since Nov. 09. It has been easy because I did have some relaxer damage but I worked with it. By using protein and moisture treatments it helped save most of my hair. So, it is possible to work with two different hair textures and continue to see growth if you do not want ot BC.
Thank you Nina! You are truly an inspiration to me as well! I've been transitioning since May 2010. It's a journey and requires patience, that's what we must understand. I had to study my natural hair texture and see which products worked for me and which ones didn't. This made a huge difference! It's like exercise for natural hair, find a regimen that works for you! Time & patience is the key! God Bless you & you family hon! ;)
thank you! thank you! thank you! I have decided to transition and I don't want to BC for a long time and most people don't understand that want both textures for a while. Thanks for the encouragement!
I see ur from detroit...i live in inkster so I'm ur neighbor :)....I also transitioned to natural because of my two daughters who are 2 and 4 yrs old....but I was wondering with us living in this FREEZING cold Michigan weather, how r u protecting your hair? Did u change anything in your regimen specifically for the winter?
i love your videos also i would also love for you to do a video on everything u do to you hair and how many time a mouth u wash it i love the way your hair looks it is just that amazing i know that took lots and lots of time im also going on three years myself natural and you made every bit of scene in this video congrats to you
When I was younger I had insecurities with my hair because I was looked at different on school I was the only one I knew of who had natural hair I loved it .

You're in love with your daughters texture not yours... That's what I got from this video.. Embracing your own texture is totally different...

I wanted to go natural at first just because I never seen my hair texture
(i got a relaxer when I was 4 or 5)
then i found something magical, youtube!
now I know all the benifits of going natural and how to take care of fully natural and transitioning hair. I love all the ladies on yt!

I can't go natural because my hair gets too thick and kinks up and falls out but i'm making it with my every 3/4 month perms.

Your hair is beautiful and healthy and you are transitioning. :-) We don't need relaxers to have beautifyul hair. I wish my mother took care of my hair rather than packing grease in it and bringing me to the hairdresser.

My 5 month old daughter is the exact reason why I decided to transition. That is so funny, you said that.

Keep up the beautiful job you are doing.

I'd love to get to know my natural texture, but I feel like it isn't cooperating with me now, what's gonna happen if I go totally natural?
tmcphatter 8 months ago

AllGirlsWannaHaveFun 1 year ago
@AllGirlsWannaHaveFun

Thank you.

There was a recent video of a woman who was telling her daughter her natural hair was beautiful however her daughter didn't buy it 100% because she never saw her mom's natural hair (google: reporter going natural). Actions speak louder than words. I think a lot of our youth don't know they have a choice. If they're being taught that their natural hair needs to be covered like most celebs and women who they see daily are doing, then they only see one option. Congrats on going natural :)

Question: Since you tend to wear your hair straight often, if in the future your daughter asks if she can straighten her hair to make it "bone straight" like mommy's (in admiration, much like you admired your mom for her straight hair), would you let her or encourage her to keep wearing her curls?

thanks so much! u definitely are an inspiration to those of us transitioning without the BC.
