Actually the low income families signed up for it to mostly to sell it to with profit.... but again i don't like condos personally but if we call our hoods for real hoods ... this is a better idea and solution yet there are some problems in connection with the culture and etc. But once we become familiar with it ... it will be sooooooo cool
Actually the new condos are in many parts of Addis. As to distribution: most of these are going to wealthy people who can pay back the government loans quickly, and not people who were originally intended to be the recipients. Dr Wubshet and others may be sincere but other factors obtain, such as ongoing poverty as MandeAle mentioned, and a national problem in tenure and land use.
they tried this in America. they are called PROJECTS and they don't work. Look for high crime, gangs, blah blah blah. WHat we really need is low income housing mixed in with higher income housing projects, not all low income people stacked in one cornor of addis that no one will ever want to visit...
I personally appreciate your comment but I don't feel you have professional knowledge to comment on. The project is not only meant for low income family, you have mixes in terms of room number, typology and land use. I say don't worry what didn't work in America(if any) certainly different from this one. I believe it's innovative solution for the worrisome situation which the poor of Addis Ababa practically experiencing don't worry. hope you take a look at again and prove the reality.
As an URBAN PLANNING MAJOR, and after having worked on several major projects in Boston, Chicago, and St. Louos. I DO feel like I am more than qualified to comment on this subject and this project. Perhaps you misunderstood what I was saying. Any time you stack one economic group of people in one are, the poroperty vales falls, no one wants to maintain none the less do any major business in those areaS. i AM IN NO WAY WISHING iss will on the project. I was merely basing my opinion on facts...
I appreciate that but I'm still wondering that you are looking it from the Chicago projects perspective which you worked for yet I believe it can never be compared with Addis where more than 90% of dwellings are substandard often called Slums and 60% earn <$1 per day. This is the fact which we have to swallow. By the way I'm civil Engineer, currently doing my second degree on housing and research on this project.if we need to make our cities cities worklet take, this may serve as a turning point
what if worrying is we may be creating high rise slums as ethiopian way of life is not conducive to apartment style living. How much thought has gone into this ??
