You truly did this song justice Tom. Your presentation with your wonderful voice and the pictures provide glimpses from that time and infuses a breath of life into those who came before us. It tells of their hopes and thoughts and allows us to share a moment with them. Thank You.

I'm a fan of pre-1918 music of all genres....this is an excellent version....just enough of the original style to remind the listener that this was written in a world before freeways and airplanes. Thank you!
This song is referred to in the novel "Gone With the Wind," including quoting the first three lines of the song. So I YouTubed it and got this gorgeous rendition. What an amazing resource You Tube is. I am 49 and always tell my 14 and 11 yr old daughters what an incredible resource tool the Internet is, and how difficult it was to find this kind of material when I was a kid. They just look at me with glazed over eyes, like old grandpa Whomever telling a war story for the 1000th time! lol
@psych3man Thanks for the compliment! The internet has opened many doors for people as you and myself. The problem with most kids getting on the internet is that there are a lot of bad doors for them to enter.
I'm rereading GWTW for the umpteenth time and have always been curious what the songs referenced in that book actually sounded like. You're right, the internet is wonderful. I'm also looking for the song "When This Cruel War Is Over", but haven't found it yet.
I adore studying catastrophic and noble American events and my favorite is the Civil War. I adore the music and dress of the event as well as the war itself. Perfect voice and music. I love all the songs put up and I would love to see some more uploads. <3 keep up the great work. :D
I would like to say "THANK YOU" to everyone who has commented on my work. Your comments are heartwarming and inspiring to say the least. Even negative comments show that someone is listening! Tom
This song was almost as popular as "Dixie" in the Confederate Army. You capture the spirit of pining those soldiers must have felt for their sweethearts every time they heard it played.
This song and these wonderful pictures bring each of us back to a time when our nation was in a struggle to determine whether or not we could endure as a nation. A beautiful song such as this had to be a strong pull on the hearts of the young men who were so far away from home and their loved ones in such trying times. This video was well done. Thank You.
My mother's name was Lorena. She always told me that her name was from a song, but I never knew what it was. It could have been this very song, and probably was. Was so glad to hear this :)
Well done! A sad romantic homey song favored and sung around Union and Southern camp fires. I found the photos of ladies a facinating study. One of the few war period songs I know the lyrics to! Thank you.
I guess this is the only song about Lorena I ever heard, I wished there were some more but this one is great enough I think, would be great if anyone ever wrote a song about Lorena and thougt bout me ;)
During the American Civil War, soldiers on both sides of the conflict thought of their wives and girlfriends back home when they heard the song "Lorena." One Confederate officer even attributed the South's defeat to the song. He reasoned that upon hearing the mournful ballad the soldiers grew so homesick that they lost their effectiveness as a fighting force.
What an awesome song !! Even more so when you realize it was written about an actual unrequited love, then compounded by the fact the boys in that horrible war on both sides knew they were never going back to their own Lorenas !!
Tom, thanks for this wonderful video. Very few today relate to what the common soldier went through during that terrrible war. You added to my day, thanks.
I love this song; so evocative and nicely rendered by you, Tom. Your rendition of this Southern standard is more authentic than my Channel version. Yours and John Hartford's bridge is different from mine...and I think I prefer yours more. Thanks for offering this fine performance. All thumbs up. Cordially, John

The years creep slowly by, Lorena,
The snow is on the grass again,
The sun's low down the sky, Lorena,
The frost gleams where the flow'rs have been.
But the heart throbs on as warmly now,
As when the summer days were nigh;
Oh! The sun can never dip so low,
Adown affection's cloudless sky.
The sun can never dip so low,
Adown affection's cloudless sky.
