they were good in the early days even tho they were on drugs.... im glad they got clean though cuz who knows where they'd be by now... plus they written insanely great songs while sober
One of the most badass riffs ever written. Classic. No Joe Perry though. I forget who replaced him for this album. Aerosmith was kinda at a low point here. I still love this album. Bitch'e Brew is another great track.
as they distanced themselves from being Boston punks, their music lost it's edge, this was for sure the last of it...nothin you can do..gotta change ! They lost me after NITR
Rock In A Hard Place...one of THE lost GREAT albums of all time...utterly brilliant!! Without Perry or Whitford (except this track), just a great rock n'roll kickass album. Jailbait! Holy smoke! You all need to really listen again!
early 1980's was quite a sad time for Aerosmith fans. when Joe Perry and Brad Whitford left the band, it wasn't the same. Thank the Lord that they got back together. Thank the Lord they are sober.
@SweetPandora93 I respectfully disagree. The more time passes, the more I've come to regard "Rock In A Hard Place" as one of their better efforts. It just flat out kicks. The problems Aerosmith had in the early eighties in my opinion had less to do with the departures of Perry & Whitford and more to do with Tyler's inability to stay clean. Crespo and Dufay were solid hands and this incarnation of the band could've made a run at things if Tyler was able to maintain some semblance of sobriety.
@SweetPandora93 (continued) the problem was that one night Tyler would be on his game and the next he'd be off in his own little world to the point where you couldn't tell what you were going to get one night to the next. I don't think they were ever able to coherently tour behind this album which is a true shame. It has never gotten the recognition it deserves.
damn these times were so far away...i wish i were around for them, even if they were painful for the band, i would've at least like to experience what it felt like at the time
But we're not the ones paying a billion dollars for advertising time. We're the the idiots paying a hundred bucks a pop to hear "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing"
I know this video isn't that great but remember the days when Aerosmith was a great hard rock band? When I see Tyler on American Idol I just wanna puke. Joe Perry, where are you?
this video diserve a better quality... it gives the impression that it was made not in 1982 but in 1928 (even with colours) ...
This is the problem with youtube... in fact 70 % of the music i love was made between more or less 1965 and 1983 but it's not what we can see in my dear favourites where 80 % of the videos are made or are songs after 1983...
It's difficult to attract the actual youth to good old rock music... 'cause of the bad quality videos...old music is 2often disadvantaged grrr
this video gives me a creepy feeling. like imagine how long ago this was made....and imagine the feelings they had, with all the drugs and partying and not having joe and brad there....it feels...odd....
@thebruno44 Bull shit, Rick Dufay is talented as fuck & a great song song writer & guitarist. He's not Joe Perry but he was the perfect replacement for Joe.
Hard rock bands are always better in their youth - and on drugs before they burn out on them. I wouldn't think of buying any Aerosmith album now - too commercial, too many 'helper' songwriters to keep their stuff commercial. Toys In The Attic and Rocks are the best. This song is awesome and I had this on LP when it was released but I don't remember much about it. Night In The Ruts is great too. Thanks to Crespo and Dufay for keep the band alive while their personal lives were being sorted.
Rock in a hard place was a great album ya they were on drugs but it was still great and i think that rock in a hard place is better than honkin' on bobo ......but anyway i love this song "when the lightning strikes" Fuckin masterpiece!!
This song kicks ass! It's actually bit more "metal" than most other Aero songs. Who cares if the "Toxic Twins" weren't together for this? A killer tune is a killer tune! Used to hear this a lot on the radio when it first came out so it brings back some memories.
Everyone is saying how Aerosmith's music is worse than before, I agree it's definitely not as good as the old days, but they are talented any way you look at it, if a song is not good, it's definitely not garbage, it's aerosmith. they love to rock and they are trying to make music based on popular demand when it comes to sound. Either way, they are all 60 and can get on stage and rock out like they are 20, and they will always be the kings of rock.
There first five alblums yes alblums thats what they were called back then or maybe 6 and 7th alblums are the only ones worth buying but the rest complete garbage you couldn't give them to me.
This is BY FAR my fav aerosmith song. And I know the GOOD STUFF FROM THEM. we r talkin mama kin, walkin in the sand, nobodys fault etc.
I noticed that the album rock in a hard place is VERY underrated. It's one of those albums where u feel like CRUSIN. itz my fav song of all time. To bad they went from this to I don't wanna miss a thing.
I've always loved Steven tyler! Joe was a personal favorite of mine, So it kinda broke my heart but then i just thought Aerosmith is Aerosmith! Go Steven and His Huge mouth, lolz thats what makes him him.
no offense to jimmy and rick but i just dont enjoy aerosmith as much without brad and joe. the songs aren't the same and plus the videos look better. joe's got a mean chest. and brad is just sooooo cute with his quiet self. steven doesn't even sound the same in the begining. p.s. the guitar solos suck in this one
@77REVOLTFORAFRIKA77 I dont think so because when they came out with the 'walk this way'/Run DMC version, that was considered Aerosmith's first music video, then they realized what it did for marketing their music and they kept making more vids after that.
when aerosmith fell apart and replaced perry and witford with Rick and Jimmy, they werent real good. But still give credit to Rick and Jimmy cuss at least they were there 4 aerosmith when they needed replacements
Never loved this album. None of the songs hit me "like a punch in the face". They're nice songs to listen to while driving and none of them totally suck (see: Seasons of Whither) but there is no song that just totally kicks ass. This is probably why I've never seen them play one of these songs in concert. It seems like the people who love this album are the people who were going to see their first Aerosmith shows in the early 80's. Nuthin wrong w/ that. I'm just sayin.
@aerojommel Steven's personal favorite is Seasons of Whither and I tend to agree with him, it's excellent! But before this LP. Also, Done with Mirrors is my favorite 80s AeroAlbum
This was actually a good ablum....even minus Perry...goes to show he is replacable. As for that period musically, one word sums it up...cocaine..too much...
I think "Night in the Ruts" is way underrated as well. Joe Perry laid down all the tracks on Ruts besides "Remember Walkin in the Sand", "Mia" and part of "No Surpize"
Best song from Aerosmith after "Dream On". And this is so underrated and kinda lost track from Aerosmith. I think Aerosmith was real rock band then and still with "Done with Mirrors" but after that the group went total shit. Everything cince Permanent Vacation has been garbage.
judus priest some heads are gonna roll john cougar melloncamp jack and diane black sabbath ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars motley crue shout at the devil ozzy osbourne i dont know black sabbath led zepplin black dog
This is what the excesses of living the rock and roll lifestyle can do to you.Look at Tyler's scenes in the studio he can barely keep his eyes open!! Thankfully they cleaned up and reformed to have an even bigger career the second time around. Read "Walk this Way" Aerosmith's Autobiography if you want to read about how they had it all,hit rock bottom and reclaimed the title of America's Greatest Rock Band.
Riddle me this?? Everyone says that "Walk this Way" was Aerosmith's big video breakthrough, that they never thought about doing videos before but the MTV audience was coming out and blah blah blah......how can that be stated when there's this video, video for "Chip Away" and "Chiquita"?..........don't get it. Technically Aerosmith had at least 4 videos under them before WTW.
god i miss this version. they were mean as hell. none of the crappy girly cheese they were churning out for mtv all through the 90's... this was when they rocked.
About the time Joe Perry and Steven Tyler parted ways. Unreal that most classic rock stations don't have this tune in their rotation. I bought this album back in 1981 on cassette tape. Overall the album wasn't that great but this song has to rank up there among their best.
This is in my top three Aerosmith songs along with Train kept a rollin and Back in the saddle. Well theres about six in my top three to be honest cant make up my burnt out mind.
I wouldn't say that they have sucked since they've cleaned up. They are talented as hell, but the music had a harder edge in the 1970's. After that MTV took control of most bands.
It was better back in the day when you had to buy the album, listen on the radio, and catch there show.
@Holechaser Truer words can NEVER be said! Aerosmith basically lost their credibility when they went straight. I knew back in 1990 that nobody would ever take them seriously again after they quit the drugs and alcohol. They could've at least kept drinking.
Aerosmith has always been a great band, all their albums were worth listening to. Many think they became soft or sold out, read 'Walk this Way', Steven hates all the crap he had to write, but they had to. Rock on blue army, Aerosmith, play whatever ya damn feel like, you rock hard!
Sorry, but I will go as far as saying they have sucked since the clean up.....it's like two different bands. One sleaazy and dirty, and one corporate and souless...
Do any experts on this band know why Brad Whitford and Joe Perry were replaced at this point? I never followed the personal relationships of Aerosmith.
Recently I heard that Joe Perry is going on without Tyler. Is Tyler too old or on drugs or what is the deal with him? Why can't he make music anymore. After seeming what performing did to Michael Jackson I am assuming Tyler just can't do it anymore?
I agree Perry is not leaving Aerosmith but the interview I saw he sounded not pleased with Tyler's constant problems. He said he has not been alone in the same room making music in over 10 years.
I think he also said the solo material was stuff he wrote for Aerosmith and he just took it and made the album anyway.
I think things are rocky right now with them but I could be wrong.
This is great, but I think that if Jimmy Sinclaire did a cover of this, it would totally rock! Has anyone else heard of Jimmy Sinclaire????? The guy is a legend.
You may say whatever you want but This song and video rocks totally. They were fucked up by drugs but Rock in a Hard Place was a good record. Jimmy Crespo made a couple of great riffs on it. but it's good that Joe And Brad returned in 1984.
@Thorgal20 I agree with you. Though I didn't listen to it then, I was aware of this video. I don't even think this is their best song on the album, a matter of taste & opinion. There are rockin' songs on it & different ones such as "Joani's Butterfly" & its Prelude. This is their most "hit-sounding" song, but contrary to what a bunch of reviewers have said, this album isn't an embarrassment, esp. considering what was going on at that time.
i luv this record, wuz amazed at how much the new guys sounded like the old guys. of course tyler, hamilton, and kramer had a lot to do with it. it's amazing tyler survived. just bought their autobiography 'walk this way', bought joey's book too. both hardbacks. can't wait to get them.
If you don't have this album, you need it. This song, Jailbait, Bolivian Ragamuffin...up there with the best Aerosmith songs. Love it when Tyler spins round at 3:20....stoned to f...k.....Sorry, but this was the last great Aerosmith album. When they cleaned up, they lost it.
ur kidding right? the new stuff is great just like the old come on srsly Cryin crazy love in an elevator rag doll livin on the edge jaded janies got a gun these are all great songs they did and look at them now have their own video game in the rock hall of fame
Ahhh, yes. I always liked this song. That weird period of time in the early to mid 80's for Aerosmith when Joe Perry and Brad Whitford took off to do their own thing and Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay came into the picture for a brief spell. This was one of those albums that flew under the radar for many years. Good post, man.
Thanks for posting this one. I had heard about this video back in 1982 and would always watch for it on MTV. Believe it or not I finally seen it here 26 years later. Thanks again.
When they interveiwed Rick Dufay he even said that this incarnation of Aerosmith was'nt working and they needed to get Brad and Joe back into the band.
Joe eventually thanked Rick for committing "career suicide" in terms of talking Steven into getting Joe and Brad back.
Not to take anything away from Jimmy Crespo, but NO ONE can replace Joe Perry's contributions to Aerosmith.
Rick was ok too, but when you establish yourself in a band for a decade, its hard to be replaced. Actually the casual fan wouldn't even have known that Brad had left for RIAHP was the only album out of what, 20, that he missed.
this song rocks...fuck alla that "cryin" and "amazing" and that stupid "dont wanna miss a thing" cornyass shit, this is fucked up rock n roll like it should be.
they were good in the early days even tho they were on drugs.... im glad they got clean though cuz who knows where they'd be by now... plus they written insanely great songs while sober

Since they recorded Pump they haven´t any good record. It´s a pity they were my idols when I was teenager and I listened these records.

@tomasmasol u know, i think nine lives is a great album, yeah, it's different but is good and hard.
sueellen360 2 years ago
This was a strange time for the band, but that's song's rhythm riff is killer.

Guess now that Steven has left the band. . . The Smith can now go away. . . So sad. . . But its time!!!
baisden62477 2 years ago
I remember I'd request this video be played at Harpos back in the 80's.. Nearly every time I'd go there.

Sorry, but I will go as far as saying they have sucked since the clean up.....it's like two different bands. One sleaazy and dirty, and one corporate and souless...

This is my favorite song of theirs as well.
Any insight would be helpful.
funny0000000 2 years ago
joe perry left because he didnt like how the band was going. brad left because he couldnt deal with the stress.
joe perry isnt leaving aerosmith again either. he just has another solo album coming out and is going to tour for it
guark23 2 years ago 2
Thanks for the info.

The guy is a legend.

rock in a hard place is my favourite aerosmith album - hard as hell, fierce, totally under-rated.
doctor22paul 2 years ago
You may say whatever you want but This song and video rocks totally. They were fucked up by drugs but Rock in a Hard Place was a good record. Jimmy Crespo made a couple of great riffs on it. but it's good that Joe And Brad returned in 1984.
Thorgal20 2 years ago 19
@Thorgal20 I agree with you. Though I didn't listen to it then, I was aware of this video. I don't even think this is their best song on the album, a matter of taste & opinion. There are rockin' songs on it & different ones such as "Joani's Butterfly" & its Prelude. This is their most "hit-sounding" song, but contrary to what a bunch of reviewers have said, this album isn't an embarrassment, esp. considering what was going on at that time.
Grendelmonster8u 1 year ago
i luv this record, wuz amazed at how much the new guys sounded like the old guys. of course tyler, hamilton, and kramer had a lot to do with it. it's amazing tyler survived. just bought their autobiography 'walk this way', bought joey's book too. both hardbacks. can't wait to get them.

Zhukov101 2 years ago 2
Cool- see what you mean about 3:20.
A little more exhale might have accentuated the moment. Rock on....

Amazing video!
(And song.)
Haha Steve looks really funny as a hood.
charljenky29 3 years ago
Great tune. Nothing is better than on-the-pipe Aerosmith.
uncledeercamp 3 years ago
Brad Whitford had actually already recorded the rhythm guitar part for this song before he left. It's just Dufay playing it.

Thanks for posting this one. I had heard about this video back in 1982 and would always watch for it on MTV. Believe it or not I finally seen it here 26 years later. Thanks again.

When they interveiwed Rick Dufay he even said that this incarnation of Aerosmith was'nt working and they needed to get Brad and Joe back into the band.
johnny10301968 3 years ago
Joe eventually thanked Rick for committing "career suicide" in terms of talking Steven into getting Joe and Brad back.
Not to take anything away from Jimmy Crespo, but NO ONE can replace Joe Perry's contributions to Aerosmith.
Rick was ok too, but when you establish yourself in a band for a decade, its hard to be replaced. Actually the casual fan wouldn't even have known that Brad had left for RIAHP was the only album out of what, 20, that he missed.

this is my face song off of Rock In A Hard Place, it was before they had Whitford.
blueflamesbabe 3 years ago
No, it was recorded before Whitford left in '81. They left his original rhythm guitar track on it.

I was talking about the video because I did not see Whitford in it. Sorry, my bad!

How did this band turn into what it did? Crap, generic, tennie bop, fag rock.
