If "political correctness" continues, will we be looking back in 20 years on "shocking" commercials for soda, yummy good food, fun kid's toys, red meat, and all the other good stuff that will probably be banned by the self-appointed safety Nazis?
Mary Tyler Moore stated that since Kent sponsored them, and they smoked them on the air they gave them cartons of kents. Mary didn't care for them too much, so she would take them to the grocery in her neighborhood and they would let her change them out for her preferred brand! lol
The German word Zeitgeist comes to mind. It means "spirit of the times". The Zeitgeist of the early sixties permitted these commercials to seem perfectly acceptable. Not so today's Zeitgeist.
@theironclads I recall an episode where Rob's driving the car with Laura in the passenger seat. He says "Would you like a cigarette?" and she says "I'd love one" an takes it from him and lights up. Whether this is on a DVD I do not know.
@wmlfan9 Your right & I recall that scene but I'm unsure as to which exact episode it was. Interestingly we still don't really see Laura actually smoking though. Rob hands her a cigarette & she then bows down somewhat below the dashboard to use the car lighter & we only see the top of her head. The scene then ends there.
@theironclads i just finished watching the whole series....i do not recall that episode with that scene....i hope i didnt miss any of them D; if you remember could you please let me know?
@myrandomthoughtss Found it! Its the episode "My Husband The Check-Grabber." Its the final scene of that episode as Rob & Laura are in their car & driving home from dinner with friends.I was wrong though as to how I thought the scene played out.Rob just hands Laura a cigarette & the scene fades out.She does not start to light up with the car lighter at all.
disgusting. destructive. costly. disease producing. addictive. Kent! guess how many distinguished stars have died due to their necessary association with the sponsor's cigarettes.
Mary recalled how Lorillard provided her and Dick with free cartons of Kent [which she always traded for her own brand at the local store] in her autobiography,"After All",
The next time you buy a carton of cigarettes, I wish I could be there to tell you that all cigarettes will kill you with emphysema, heart disease and lung cancer, and with Kent's Micronite filter made from asbestos, it really will do you in.
I'm not entirely sure but I think Mary actually used to get dozens of free cartons of Kents a week for this and she would turn them in for clove cigarettes... I wish I could give citation but its been so long since I read/heard this...
No, not clove cigarettes, but Mary did say on a talk show I saw- maybe Letterman- that she did get free Kents, and promptly would exchange them at the store for the brand she preferred. I don't know if she gave up smoking now, but I know she still smoked during her MTM series, and she said she was careful not to let the audience see her smoking.
Lorillard Tobacco [Kent] co-sponsored "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW" {with Procter & Gamble} from 1962 through '66; Dick and several of his cast appeared in "integrated commercials" at the end of the episodes sponsored by Kent. These are several examples- some delivered while in character, and some with Dick and the others as "themselves". Yes, even Richard Deacon did a few. By the way, Dick and Mary got free cartons of Kents...which they often traded for their OWN brands at their local stores.
GOD i was born too late! when a man could live his life, One man with a job could afford to buy a house, car, and support his entire family!

I love the episode where Rob spoofs the scene from Now, Voyager where Paul Henreid lights two cigarettes at once - hysterical.

Mary Tyler Moore used a cigarette holder IRL. Too bad she didn't slip one into Kent commercials...

With that voice Rose Marie is the perfect pitch woman for cigarettes.
