lol i love how they try and portray it as if the british cavalry were doing something extraordinarily brave and chivalrous as opposed to the fact that they were actually just charging straight into oncoming cannon fire.
This scene was shot at the Paramount Ranch, a huge area west of L.A. where all the studios paid Paramount rent to shot outside. The Adventures of Robin Hood was shot there. But they let us UCLA students shoot there for free. Lots of sheep there too!

Film had nothing to do with historical accuracy but geez what a great charge scene. My brother, who is a Crimean War buff, actually walked the battlefield.
paintball:the leaders were not cowards. lord cardigan led the charge all the way to the guns about 2 and half miles. lucan should have questioned the order received from lord raglan the army commander. a captain nolan figures in the misunderstanding. a major part of all of this is the two commanders hated each other to the point of not talking to one another. come back tks
Flynn was deeply angered over the massive cruelty inflicted on the horses while they were filming this, and tried to put a stop to it. He also ended up attacking the director (Michael Curtiz, I believe) who continuously was as negligent about actors' safety as he was about that of the horses. Flynn hated him, and damn near killed him, had to be pulled off of Curtiz by David Niven and a couple of other guys on the set.
@sueharristication Yep - made my comment having only watched the opening bits of scene -- by the time I spotted there were also 'right way up' views, I didn't know how to edit my hasty comment - the price of pedantry!
have to correct myself the leader of the light brigade was lord cardigan and the commander of the 4 cav div which included the light and heavy brigade was lord lucan (george byngham)
as hollywood as it gets i still have fond memories of watching this as a kid in t he late fifties
fyi the five regiments were the 17lancers 13 light dragoon 11 hussars 8 hussars 4 light dragoons the heavy brigade was halted by lucan before they could advance in support
most of the regiment survived which was amazing given that russian artillery was righly feared.
about 75 percent reformed under lord cardigan (james brudenell) it seems i have a distant relative named burton who was wi th the 11 hussars but did not charge. really enjoy discussing this charge so hope someone will respond.. as an aside there were about 670 troopers in the charge..the leader of the brigade should have verified the order (lord lucan)
@pdogone1 One curiousity is that while the casualty toll was huge it was not unusual. EG several regiments at Waterloo sustained similar casualty rates. The Charge has gone down in history for two reasons. Tennyson's poem and the Times coverage. Another reality of course is that the part played by the 4th chaseurs d'Afrique in assisting the Brigade back from the charge is largely forgotten to popular memory.
Ah, the movie that made congress look seriously at animal abuse in films. It's a shame when the reality of cruel directors takes grips on such a great movie.
@martynrobin121 No the famous Prussian general said. "I am more afaid of any army of sheep lead by a lion, then an army of lions lead by a sheep". That what i though he was quoting.
@martynrobin121 I don't care about the crimean war im obviously talking about a different quote geez how hard is that to figure out. Why dont you look it up yourself.
According to Wiki, not all who took part were killed. The blame for ordering something this stupid gets passed back and forth among those in charge. Historians still argue about it.
However, the bravery of this charge was an inspiration to the public and other cavalry.
(Bravery on the part of those who charged into almost certain death.)
The last veteran of this charge died in 1927. Apparently the vets used to meet every so often.
27th Lancers did not even exist in 1854 and NEVER existed in the British regular army. There was a 27th Lancers in the Indian army of the LATTER 19th. century though. The 17th. Lancers were present in the Crimea. Miscommunication the mother of many if not most SNAFUS!
@yank1776 Perhaps they used two hundred plus horses to make the movie, but only a few dozen were killed by the use of trip wires in the charge sequence. It was wrong all the same.
In reality, this episode totally un-nerved the Russian Army. They believed that the British were totally unpredictable and chose to try to fight another kind of war. Which they lost.
That was some charge!

Great cavalry charge.
No CGI here
And I 10 people were injured I would hate to think how many horses were hurt or killed.
That ground looks pretty rocky (which it was)
