I think the whole synth and tripiness of it all was kind of a bad move but i mean I'm sure a lot of people love it. Listen. The sound they are putting out is huge. I guess they could have digitally reproduced a lot, but what fun is that? I'd much rather have a big-band live experience. Many vocal tracks, many keyboards, a sick bass line, drums, guitar, etc....all that delay and reverb turned up....Man, I wouldn't have had that any other way.

@smibbo cause it was recorded in a somewhat unique way. look for interviews with ryan olson/gayngs, and he explains the process. he would make the skeleton of a song (drums and occasionally some synth), then bring in a bunch of bassists to do their thing. he would cut and paste their stuff around, picking the best parts. same for vox etc. it was a huge collaboration. and there are many parts to each song. plus, the whole thing is supposed to be an overblown spectacle anyway.
