She was a beautiful woman, and was one of the best opera singers of all time. In Greece she was known to be very patriotic and the country loved her for that during the hard times they went through. IF you get a chance sometimes to hear her sing the Greek national anthem, tears will come to your eyes to hear the strength of her feeling what she is singing.

Totally disagree with the 'sweet' comment. She knew how to be sweet..she was never sacarene in the extreme, but she could do warm and enveloping VERY well..some of what monteventtino says is true..it is of any singer on occassion. The amazing thing is she still was wonderfull with all these faults.

Callas' voice was harsh, infinitely flexible, but never sweet. Often she sounded like a woman possessed. Listen to any great soprano and then listen to Callas singing the same music. The other soprano is always quite nice and Callas voice is strong but a lot of times awful. Her mettalic voice was very expressive but without the faintest touch of prettiness.
