@MOOSMUTZEL2 you're right. and kitano himself is different. he glamorizes neither the yakuza nor violence. instead, he slyly uses the myth of both to expose larger complexities w/in Japanese society itself -- deeply rooted schisms in Japanese national, cultural, and historical identity. his bravest films are sleek, cool, acutely subversive meditations on human corruption & pathos... artful, authentic constructions of epic tragedy in disguise. the ancient Greeks would be proud to call him aniki.
Perfection. Keiichi Suzuki also composed the soundtrack for Kitano's "The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi." This kicks Kitano's latest into the stratosphere. No one can touch Kitano's movies. A totally distinct presence in cinema and a true original behind the camera. As with most artistic geniuses, few fully comprehend the sublime complexity of his work.
I just love the drum tracks.

@MOOSMUTZEL2 correction: kitano uses the mythos surrounding the yakuza and violence to expose larger complexities within Japanese society itself...
