I'm off grid as far as water, gas and electricity. Our municipality only provides volunteer fire dept. road maintenance and landfill. I use satellite for internet and phone, both necessary for business purposes. Our purpose was and is to live comfortably without any reliance on "public" utilities.
Most people want to eventually live off the grid anyway. It's a retirement plan. Once the kids are all grown up, you sell the house, buy some acreage out the middle of nowhere, live off the land growing your own food, having your own well dug so you're not poisoned by the flouride and hormones in the water, having your own power source be it solar or wind or whatever and just relaxing in peace and quiet with the one you love and had made a life with. That is off the grid to me.

Must be that people are more emotionally impacted by this attitude and thus, more likely to tune in. Ah, how we are manipulated. : ) Plus, there are alot of people who have a sort of fear or disdain for "gun totin' paranoid off the grid type folk" because they have no knowledge of the real definition and purpose of living "off the grid." I found an outdoor shower for $159 propaine tankless water heater use that along with a solar collector for water and you got rid of that 220 then get a propaine/solar oven then you got rid of that 220 once you have those eliminated you are left with 110 which can easily be satiffied with battery, inverters,wind or water generators and solar. Really we could all be off grid if we half ass tried. There are solar electric bikes for C sake. FK Oil.
@cdltpx We are already debt free recently bought window units for 3 rooms sealed the others you would not believe the savings since we turned off the central air. When you go to get solar they want to see your current usage then design a system around that. I say we need to tear down the house first, build a geodesic concrete dome home then get the solar panels we would come out cheaper. The dome is fire tornado lightening hurricane bullet 30/0/06 hell just say DISASTER PROOF except flood.

I agree, the grid is simply a definition that refers to land lines that connect electric to homes. When one lives off the grid they are simply referring to the absence of this connection. This is simply decentralized power. However, many have chosen to believe off grid refers to crazy people hiding from the GOV.

I live off grid and use solar and wind power bu I also have cell phone, satellite, tv, and broadband internet.
This is a problem when people think living off grid means having no information access or entertainment.
Off grid homes can have all the luxuries of on grid homes if thats what you want.
