This was a public demonstration against the Soviet invasion in her homeland, and regardless of how you may see it, Soviet-led authorities take even the mildest of publicly expressed dissent quite seriously. She faced huge repercussions when she returned home. We can't post links on YT, but there's a NY Times article from 1990 called "A Departure From the Past" which you can Google for more info.

In Japan it was printed, but only after CZE authorities had censored much of it. @MegaFeofan The Mexican President once had to threaten to cease oil trade with Mexico unless the Czechoslovakian government would allow her to come to Mexico to coach. It wasn't until 185 that she was allowed to join the European Gymnastics Union and start judging. I'm sorry that you think this protest was so boring, but brief exposure to history should indicate how ignorant and irrelevant that opinion is.

She was a hero to me and all my classmates at the Catholic girls' high school I attended in Connecticut. We had quite a few students whose parents had escaped from Czechoslokia, East Germany and Hungary, and Vera symbolized resistance to the Soviet domination of the Eastern bloc nations. This was a public demonstration against the Soviet invasion in her homeland, and regardless of how you may see it, Soviet-led authorities take even the mildest of publicly expressed dissent quite seriously. She faced huge repercussions when she returned home. We can't post links on YT, but there's a NY Times article from 1990 called "A Departure From the Past" which you can Google for more info.

@MegaFeofan Anyway, prior to the '68 Games she was in hiding from authorities. After the Games she finished her autobiography which was not allowed to be published in Czechoslovakia. In Japan it was printed, but only after CZE authorities had censored much of it. She wasn't allowed to work in gymnastics, and authorities told her that they'd only let her if she'd say publicly that she never signed the Prague Spring manifesto. (More...)

She was a hero to me and all my classmates at the Catholic girls' high school I attended in Connecticut. We had quite a few students whose parents had escaped from Czechoslokia, East Germany and Hungary, and Vera symbolized resistance to the Soviet domination of the Eastern bloc nations. And she was a great gymnast.

Secondly the problem started already around 1948 when Russians had a big influance in the politics of Czechoslovakia...well actually since the end of the war...well lets not go so deep.
