I respect the man, but he his view of love is tragically limited. I don't believe that Bukowski was ever a parent. This we share, I too am not a parent. Even though I am not a writer or a poet, I have more imagination that he does. I know that the love a parent feels for their child is more resilient than he describes. Lastly, my wife is critically ill with failing kidneys. I know my love for her will not burn off in the sun.

I know what love is, I can't describe it but I know what it means to me. I am certain listening to a drunken wife beater is not the best plan. I used to enjoy Chuck in my early 20's but no more. I grew up and out of his writing. Check out Rumi.

what were you expecting? unicorns and rainbows? for some people, love is-to quote Buk-a dog from hell. some people are so withdrawn from society, their social ineptitude prevents them from having meaningful, lasting relationships. its not a "get over it" thing. its how they are. the smartest and most talented people in the world are also the most damaged. to quote frank gehry: "talent is liquefied trouble". so these issues propelled his writing

We went out drinking, had parties, and then when I left they just acted like I was going to be back again tomorrow. Nobody cared, and I haven't gotten more than 3 or 4 phone calls from "friends" since that time. Well, I think some of my people may have cared for me at one point but my insecurities erased any chance for us to be anything other than acquantances. I just remember so many failed opportunities to get closer to them and I failed, and just ended up using them as my psychologists. I don't hate people, I just can't interact with them.

I just haven't had a lot of experiences with bad people. Nobody's ever really screwed me over. At the high school I went to, everybody virtually got along with each other and it had a "big family" atmosphere.

Anybody that has ever fallen in love knows that there is always that first spark...that longing burning star....that feeling of gut wrenching desire and commitment. I plan to go pick up Post Office and Women on friday. Needless to say I can't wait, I'll probably read them both the day I get them. I love many authors but Bukowski is just so beautifully subtle and such a comfortable read. It feels easy, almost too easy -- but after you've read it, it stays with you, unlike most writers whose work seems difficult - in the end it's just pretentiousness masking nothingness.

i love bukowski,and he can be very deep,and quite quotable...but hiding behind cynicism is like being steve mcqeen,it's a symptom of fear(understandable)...love can't be summed up in a nihilistic sound-byte...i love my mother,i love my dogs(these are unconditional and pure),and in some way,though relationships go sour,i love all my lovers through my life,and my friends -- love is nothing to rail against(maybe bad judgement,but that's on you)

Believe me pal, I know. There are times when I just want to be completely alone for years at a time, and others when I just need to be the center of attention. I'm always thinking about the past, and never the present or future.
I'm just saying that saying "love is just a chemical reaction" doesn't cheapen the concept in any way. If anything, it makes it more beautiful.

4 yrs ago, i loved people & loved being listened to, touched, etc. but all that faded. without getting into details, im a pretty cynical, reclusive loner now. all my love, and the need to be needed has been starved out of me. if you go long enough without it, whilst trying, eventually you stop knocking on the door, to what turns out to be an empty house. i may not love my self-isolated but it beats the hell out of my terminally ill effort. im also stuck in the past. im not lonely. just bored

I know exactly how you feel. At my old job, I thought that the people I worked with were friends. We went out drinking, had parties, and then when I left they just acted like I was going to be back again tomorrow. Nobody cared, and I haven't gotten more than 3 or 4 phone calls from "friends" since that time. I can't remember the last time I had a conversation with somebody, and I'm still infatuated with the concept of being around those people even if it meant nothing to them.

yeah, same. i would surround myself by assholes, and would allow myself to be taken advantage of, just because i was around people. even if they didnt shut up when i spoke, it was just nice to have company. 2 things: take this quote into mind from the book Rasselas by Samuel Johnson: "Life is a condition in which much is to be endured and little to be enjoyed." and watch on utube "Impossible Germany" by Wico. its about awaking from denial and accepting yourself. hauntingly beautiful.

Well, I think some of my people may have cared for me at one point but my insecurities erased any chance for us to be anything other than acquantances. I just remember so many failed opportunities to get closer to them and I failed, and just ended up using them as my psychologists. I don't hate people, I just can't interact with them.

Ive been dragged through the coals quite a few times, and its not that ive had good and bad experiences;ive only had the bad ones. and i guess im at the point now where i wont allow anyone to get close to me, almost to justify my disappointment with the world. im insane, i know this, but i lack the energy--im tired as hell--to put my right foot forward and just be a true man and face the world. at least im honest about it.

I just haven't had a lot of experiences with bad people. Nobody's ever really screwed me over. At the high school I went to, everybody virtually got along with each other and it had a "big family" atmosphere.

I plan to go pick up Post Office and Women on friday. Needless to say I can't wait, I'll probably read them both the day I get them. I love many authors but Bukowski is just so beautifully subtle and such a comfortable read. It feels easy, almost too easy -- but after you've read it, it stays with you, unlike most writers whose work seems difficult - in the end it's just pretentiousness masking nothingness.
