  • This car is leaning over on its sides going just 10 mph!

  • The 350hp "Thunderbird special " Was avaialble but was very, very, rare. Standard engine would of been a Y block in 1960 i believe, The 390 was prolly the best overall performer.

  • Sorry I kinda missed what car where whe talking about here ????

  • Nice house.

  • Be Still My Heart! That is one of the COOOOLEST cars I have EVER seen. Cousin to the Falcon and the Galaxie, this Better Idea will soar into the hearts of all.

I sure do love a classic Thunderbird!

  • Massive skyroof!

  • Were parts of this commercial filmed on the MGM studio lot? The Loews movie theatre seem to be in indicator.

  • i think so they my have cut down main drag to ocean side ?

  • amore.

  • Pretty sweet - you can see the designers were inspired by cars that were lowered. They always look better low.....

  • The biggest problem with the retro bird was the engine was too weak to justify the cost of the car. If they would have put in a 5.4 liter 300hp engine in it then it would have been worth the price that they were selling it for.

  • If the retro bird could nock down 110 miles per gallon ,like tom ogles 390 cid 1970 galaxie , i could forgive the minor hp losses..

  • the claim in this commercial that the horse power was 350hp? Was that inflated and inacurate?

  • i think i really pounded out 350 hp, but man you coulnt stop it too quickly. today with CELL PHONE ITITS need more distance or better yet as shown here MORE SHEET METAL

  • @OsbornTramain That was with the 430 Liincoln engine ( J code I believe ). Not too many were made with it. Most had a 300 hp 352 and some had a 235 hp 2bbl 352. I think the figures were inflated. There really isn't much difference in the 300 hp 352 in '58/ '60 and the 250hp 352 in '64/'66.

  • na the newest bird was good quiet car what killed it was dealer mark up 42k was too much for high volume segment of its marker share

  • It's odd how the "new" Thunderbirds were flops. Actually, the reason I have read is that they were made of cheapy materials.

  • They were flops because they looked kinda bad, the engine was weak. Basically, Ford was pretty weak at the time, the styling was not very well done.

Essentially, Ford couldn't spend that much money, and paid the price.

However, I think if they relaunched the Thunderbird as a sporty coupe, something priced higher than a Mustang, it would sell very well.

My rec would be to sell it in three carriages:

    4.0L V6

    4.6L/5.0L V8

    6.2L V8

Give it some IRS, make it a real sports car, unlike the Mustang.

  • well back in the 90's im thinking 91-97 ford did put the 4.6L and 5.0L V-8 in the bird...to me the less HP engine would be the Base model the 3.8L V-6 without the supercharger..

  • what ever does the most work requires the most mantinance,, if you add indipendant rear like ford did on the explorer all you did was add complexcity to a simple RUGGED design.. me ill take that FE block anyday and the IRON CASE cruse o matic , and please tell me that the ford 31 spline or the 28 spline 9 " rear was more dependible than any gm peice at the time after all they dont run toyota rear ends in nascar today. fFord has enough sport coops . no money out there. ill nod to

    bird

  • I lhave a lincoln ls with the same drivetrain as the new thunderbirds and it's a damn good engine and tranny.

  • wronk the bird was too much for that 30k dollar car me i liked it ..

  • the 60 tv ad was great too, the great dane

leaning with turns then sticking head throu sunroof was hilarious.

  • i wish some day was today i love these old birds!

  • I own a 1960 Thunderbird and this commercial has made my day! Perhaps if they could smell the interior 50 years later they might leave the Tux home!

  • Cool Jazz, Adults in formal attire and breathtaking landscapes architecture, man I love this ad!

  • This is the best Thunderbird commercial I've ever seen. Aren't those the same gates the Edsel drove out of in their first commercial?

  • very cool video...love that ride.

  • 350 horses for 1960!? thats amazing you dont even get that in today's mustang gt lol

  • That is a rare commerical. Thanks for posting it. Now if only my '60 Bird had that sunroof...

  • god work with the commercial.... i want to buy one, seriously

  • I want to say that's "ken nordines voice " his signature song was called "my baby"

  • 1960 was the final year for the "square" bird and for the front tilting hood. The "square" bird reappeared in 1980 and lasted until 1982.

  • Very interesting! It was amazing how the early 50's and 60's commercials always showed people in Formal Attire!

  • Great old commercial. I have a 2-tone blue bird. Mine doesn't have the moon roof though!
