  • shiver me timbers!!! Outstanding!

  • Not only was Deanna Durbin a wonderful, passionate, tasteful singer, but the music chosen for her was of a very high quality. Victor Herbert's remarkably flowing melodies suited her well. Remember that at the turn of the century, Herbert and George M. Cohan's shows were considered the absolute height of entertainment.

  • Beverly Sills did a better job with this song? Sure, and the Easter bunny is real.

  • I just can't get over the richness and the expressiveness of the voice of Deanna Durbin, and at such a young age. She has been away since retiringf and just walking away from her career at age 26, I believe. And she is 89 years young today, December 4, 2010. God bless Edna Mae Durbin.

  • Glorious, simply glorious! Thank God for youtube!

  • Actually Deanna's voice is not strong at all, but very beautiful and we should be thankful to her vocal coaches who made such a wonderful singer out of her. There are plenty talented young people in America today but the guys who are in charge of show business have no idea of what is good taste and and simply destroy these talents. I just hope that people will finally realize that what is going on right now in the world of show business and especially singing is totally wrong.

  • THESE LYRICS AND THE MELODY ARE JUST BRILLIANT BY VICTOR HERBERT AND OF COURSE NO EQUAL COULD BE FOUND AS SUNG BY DEANNE DURBIN.

THIS HAS SUCH STYLE AND GRACE THAT CAN NE'ER BE EQUALED - THANK GOD IT WAS CAPTURED ON FILM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • So effortless and beautiful at the same time. My highschool music teacher acquainted us with Victor Herbert music and I am impartial to his songs to this day! We had a girl who could reach those high notes just as beautifully as Deanna, wish I knew what became of her and her talent.

  • She made her debut with Judy Garland. The studio kept Judy. Deana was the better singer( That's hard to say when talking about Judy) .She lives in Paris is 87 and will respond to letters but will not give interviews. She is a classy lady and never felt comfortable with the big egos in Hollywood.

  • В послевоенном СССР это был один из самых любимых фильмов, а Дина Дурбин-самая очаровательная актриса. ЕЕ фотографии были также популярны,как Орловой и Латыниной!

  • What ever happened to all of her films? I used to watch them all with my mum! We are real fans!

  • I believe she's still around, but quit movies quite suddenly around 1949. Many don't remember her today (unfortunately) but she was one of the biggest stars in films back then. Great voice! Thanks for sharing!

  • what movie is this from? i remember seeing this when i was a little girl... but that was sooo long ago! is that franchot tone?

  • Beverly Sills did a better job with the song. Victor Herbert was an Irish zingaro (part Gypsy). Herbert is an Irish Gypsy name. That's why there is so much passion in his music.

  • she´s amazing!

  • oh gosh I couldn't (or dared not) breathe listening to that!

  • fabulously ...

  • one of my favourite 'old' songs. The words are so meaningful and sung with such fervour by Deanna Durbin. A show-stopper !!

  • I always feel so sorry for her when she thinks that he's just ignoring the fact shes just sang so beautifully! I do so love this movie - its the only 1 i own so its vry special 2 me!

  • I always have to laugh at this scene, a Broadway producer who can't seem to differentiate between a live voice and a voice over AM radio. LOL!

  • a national treasure. a good sweet girle

how i wish we had people like this today

sadly a by gone age. god bless her

  • Absolutely beautiful. Both Victor Herbert and Ivor Novello are two of my favourite composers.

  • The movie is "His Butler's Sister" (1943). The actor is Franchot Tone. It is indeed too bad that she often had such slight material to work with.

  • This is absolutely gorgeous! Word can't express how much i <3 her

  • How splendid was THAT?!!! When You're Away is one of my favorite Victor Herbert songs and Deanna sings it to perfection. What a pity there's no one like her in this day and age. She was always a joy..a rare performer to treasure and remember. Thank you for sharing this beautiful song on YOU TUBE.

  • Deanna Durbin is just glorious, beautiful and appears to be totally unaffected - an undiva of a diva just like Dawn Upshaw is. Same pure sweet yet rich and powerful. How could Universal have tried to stifle her singing and acting talents with B type movies, instead of letting her do great movies and other outlets for those magnificent talents. No wonder she just got tired of it and walked away from the whole thing. Bravo, Deanna Durbin. P.S.My daughter's first name is also Edna. :-)

  • A TIME THAT WILL NEVER BE AGAIN.....thank god for film.........john locke lyric pines

  • I miss the black and white musical.

  • A great Victor Herbert Love song. For an Irishman, he could sure write a love song. Anonther Irishman talking here.

  • A beautiful song sung by one of Hollywoods foremost sopranos. She captured the emotional message of the song better than any other singer. Her voice was sweetness and purity personified.

  • Perhaps the finest interpretation of this beautiful song I"ve ever heard. I like Beverly Sills' recording, too, among others, but I think Deanna's is the best. Her uniquely natural and unaffected qualities as a singer/actress were never better suited than to operetta, which often, in other performers' hands, comes off as arch and mannered. Deanna's vocal and emotional purity is most welcome...and she looks gorgeous, too! Thanks for posting.
