Achilles and Patroclus. Harmodios and Aristogeiton. The Sacred Band of Thebes. This thing was a huge trope in the ancient Hellenic tradition. Unlike all other forms of erotic love, it entails, potentially, another incredibly strong bond: that of brothers in arms. Mirrored by legends of the Amazons.
@lebarosky Spartan youths and men lived almost exclusively together until the man reached the age of 25 to 30 and was then obligated to take a wife and have children to add to the population. But even after marriage, a man could still choose to live with his male lover. Before going into battle, Spartan men would sacrifice to Eros Protogonus, the first born of all ancient Greek Gods, praying to spend eternity together should they die in battle. It was actually marriage of the highest honor.
@katinasvenska If you, as a woman, feel alienated by the love story between two gay men ......... then you now understand how gay men feel when they watch heterosexual love stories like Romeo and Juliet ......... it is all okay ...... love between any two people is a gift from God and is beautiful.
A truly beautiful and very sorta sad video. But the cultic thing is not my thing. Sad for the stacks of homosexual youth who suffer worldwide because of their orientation.
I believe the story of the love affair between Roman Emperor Hadrian and Antinous is the greatest love story of human history: the love between an Emperor and an God. It is a sad love story, Ozgayforyuz, for the same reasons that Romeo and Juliet is a sad love story. The reasons being the interference by intensely stupid people in the private affairs and relationships of others. Technology has advanced, but the masses are just as stupid today as they were in the time of Hadrian.
I do not believe they all had curly hair. The statues of people from ancient Rome and Greece are usually of the politically powerful and wealthy elite classes. Having curly hair may have been a hair style of the wealthy elite classes. Maybe some YouTube members who have studied ancient Greek and Roman culture might comment.
In antiquity it considered "in" (fashionable) to curle the hair, but only in official cases! What's for sure is that greeks had blond or almost blond hair and rarely darker (black or deep brown) until turkish occupation......
Me forget the love story between Alexander and Hephaestion? No way! To me their relationship is the 2nd Greatest Love Story ever in the history of mankind!
Hadrian declared Antinous, his young Greek lover, a God of Rome, an act by an Emperor not generally accepted by the Roman elite. Hadrian also built a grand temple complex to Antinous at his Villa Tivoli outside Rome and built a city to Antinous in Egypt that exceeded the grandeur of the Taj Mahal in India. Theirs was an eternal love!
Thanks fragilebeaster. There is great irony in the fact that Shakespeare's story of Romeo and Juliet is fantasy and fiction, while the love story between Hadrian and Antinous, between an Emperor of Rome and a God, is historical fact. It is a shame that most heterosexuals prefer fantasies and fiction to the truth.
I believe the love between Hadrian and Antinous is the Greatest Love Story ever in the history of mankind! The love between an Emperor and a God! Ave Antinous!
Sometimes people cannot see but the things they are expecting to see! For so many years homosexuality in animals was not recognized, even though the researchers saw it! They did not believe what they saw! For so many years doctors thought that "homosexuals" are sick, in spite of the evidence that Plato and Socrates and Aristote and so many other men have been obviously healthy and perfectly adjusted personalities!
Even scientists used to think like that: Genitalia are only for breeding, the nose is (only?) for respiration, etc. In fact all things in nature are polyfunctional. I remember case of the Human Genome Project: it was a time when everybody was convinced that the human genome must have about 100,000 bases, because of the specific role attributed to every gene. In fact there are far less (around twenty-something thousand) because all of them are polyfunctional, having multiple roles!
Yes Eros..., I used to ask myself the same question: how come did Judaism become such a a hateful religion. I think part of the answer is that all the monotheistic religions tend to be very domineering and dictatorial. Think about the Pharaoh Ekhnaton!
On the other hand think about the fact that even today scientists have a tendency to oversimplification of the relation between an organ and its function (only 1 function, obviously).
On the other hand, the end of the suffering is in sight. Fortunately enough, You Tube is part of the solution, and not part of the problem!
It is increedible for me how much progress we have seen in this direction since the internet was developed! I am very happy when I see beautiful boys finding (even without any education directed at that) the fact that we (our society anyway) still live THE BIG LIE!
Yes, Erosgodforgays. I wanted to say that I agree 100% with you. But I noticed that you have missed the essential: the only homophobic religion in the Ancient Roman Empire two millenia ago was Judaism, with a whole array of really criminal tenets. Christianity and Islam have only copied and pasted the whole enchilada on their belief system.
The worst moment of the History (ancient and contemporaneous) was the moment when the Maccabees won the fight with the hellenized Jews.
I totally agree with you on that point. I tend to criticize christianity and islam more than judaism, because they became more widely dominant. I have often wondered how judaism borrowed so much from zoroaster on the monotheistic god model, but then remained essentially a militant religion, just as militant as islam is today.
To think that less than two centuries later, when the Emperor Constantine has decided to adopt the Judeo-Christian ethics, suddenly this love was outlawed and people like these were burned to death...and the ancient world has fallen into the dark ages...it still makes me feel the anger of the Poet Palladas, who said "they have burried us, Greeks" and the fury of Julian the Apostate, who said: "You conquered us, o you man from Nazareth"!!!
This part of human history is very sad, 48acar19. With the slow disintegration of the Roman Empire and the rising domination of its pieces by barbarians and fascist religions such as Christianity and Islam, mankind adopted institutional systems that dominated, manipulated and managed human thought. Today, human freedom is an illusion and conformity to the majority will and the norms established by these two dominant organized religions is mankind's reality.
I want to thank you for this post. I am a great fan of Hadrian and his love story with Antonious. He made his lover a god, with temples, priests, ceremonies... Can we imagine a better proof of love ?
i absolutely love this! i wish every heterosexual in america would watch it. thanx so much for making and posting it. not only am i downloading it to watch over and over again on my ipod, it's going directly into my favorite file.
The Egyptian statue at 3:25 has always been one of my favorites.
The music also moved me. It sounds like Thomas Newman.
This would be highly appropriate as Newman composed the score for many gay films including Angels in America. The penultimate scene in Angels is a moving fantasia in which the protagonist wanders through Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli.
Hadrian was one of the greatest of the Roman Emperors. My partner's family is originally from Spain. Spanish guys are smart, hot and sexy! Antinous was a lucky guy! I am a lucky guy! LOL
love this video - i've seen the sculpture of Antinous in the archaeological museum in Olympia - the most beatiful representation i think. cheers

@CobaNcini Hi, the music track is "Any Other Name" by Thomas Newman. Thanks for the comment!

I've learned the story of love between them, very romantic and ironic.
When Antinous died, Hadrian was mourning the death of Antinous, and he built the magnificent places in memory of Antinous :'(

@ozgayforyuz It's not because of their orientation; it's because of homophobia and ignorance, because of the way they are treated.
The same way, an Afroamerican isn't suffering because of his skin color, but because of xenophobia and racism.
