He should've just went for the Sludge Bomb at the end. Even with no investment, it does around 55%. If the Venusaur was offensive, it would've taken Absol out with room to spare.

Many Mismagius are either the sub set, like yours, or specs, like mine on Shoddy Battle. I find the Specs/Scarf set to work pretty well with shadowball tbolt hp fighting and trick. I find that Cloyster can hit pretty well against any subber with rock blast, icicle spear and explosion, along with a move of your choice. Personally, I don't like subbers, but meh, if all you've seen out of cloyster is a utility, then it's not your fault, especially if you don't play UU as much as other people do.

Not really actually. Cloyster's skill link ability allows it to hit 5 times with moves like rock blast. And when you hit 5 times, it's not unllikely to get at least 1 crit
