On the album jacket for Time Further Out, Brubeck professes his admiration for Morello, stating that most drummers could NOT play an entire piece in the odd time signatures they were using. They get lost. Morello was a college educated musician and therefore techinically proficient. Of course, the rest of it is pure talent. He looks as if he could play as fast as Buddy if he chose to.

Buddy Rich was my favorite drummer until I discovered Joe Morello. This guy grooves like nobody I've ever seen. This solo is in 5/8, and I have never seen Buddy play in anything but 4. When was the last time you saw a drummer take an entire solo in odd meter? This is just mind blowing!!!!! AMAZING!!!
i understand your enthusiasm but odd time is not the reason joe morello is so ridiculously good . It is because of his groove , control , and most of all his unbelievably musical phrasing .
There are plenty of odd time drum solos recorded and video taped as well ... odd time alone is no more special than 4/4 alone .. both can suck , both can be amazing . Joe obviously is amazing .
Well Mark, first of all... I wasn't talking about Take Five, I was talking about this solo which I'm pretty sure is in 5/8. And yes, 3/4 is odd meter, but you know what I meant. Both drummers are wicked, obviously.
0.41-50 that floor tom thing blows my mind- haven't seen a drum solo as tasteful as this before. He keeps that pulse going with the left foot- so important.

I agree I love Buddy Rich and his chops are amazing, but Morello really groves.

Dan
I am forced to agree with you!!!
Dave Brubeck loved to compose in odd time signatures 5/4 7/4 9/8 etc.
and his drummer Joe Morello played them
without any effort or distress
Joe IS THE BEST

@DanLetts97 Then you have VERY limited knowledge of what Buddy played.
For example, MANY of his charts are in 3/4.
Not taking anything away from what you said about Joe. He's one of the greatest of all time.
And, FYI, Take Five is written in 5/4 ~
