love this film for lots of reasons..this scene is beauiful with moby song. justin with surreal killers video and muse blackout song scene but also the actors really make the quirky nature film believable and who would of thought especially from the rock and the rest. love it. true cult film..we will be talking bout this film for years
Saw this movie on DVD at a friend's a couple of years ago and loved it. I didn't quite understand all of it, but there's something very intriguing about the style of the movie, plus the acting is very good and God, the final scene was just amazing. I'm gonna head over to amazon now and order the DVD.
This movie is so awesome for so many reasons, but I think my favorite thing about it is the way the future isn't like, really dystopian or utopian, it seems like almost believable.
@vcny45 If i EVER meet the Rock, my plan is to simply walk up to him, shake his hand and say "I loved you Southland Tales"..For whatever reason, i am incredibly interested in seeing what his reaction would be.
First time I watched it I didn't quite understand what was going on, but I loved it. And It stayed inside somehow until recently, I decided to watch it again high. It was epic. All the emotions and dialogues and the little details it's so fucking spot on. Not further from what we may face some day in the near future. Anyone noticed the shirt of the Rock when he has his arms spreading, right before the explosion? The blood(I think) forms a face right before the explosion. 10/10
@Wolf5Vlud its jesus, if you read to prequel you find out that in the power that the tattoo of the "actual" religion on jerico will bleed snake blood at the end of the world. thats why his tattoo of jesus bleeds rather than the jewish star or hindu symbol because in the movie christianity has "won"
This scene is like a hauntingly beautiful music video mixed with a live action comic book. I just love the way Richard Kelly blends themes. Phenomenal.
OK movie with some great visuals and a VERY cool story. I think Kelly should have taken a more serious approach to the story rather than a comedic one. He could have eliminated characters like the Baron and his mother (neither would have been missed) and just made them unseen figures that are talked about but never visualized. Still, the story was actually incredible, but the movie a bit less-so.
I actually thought the best scene of the film was the Blimp entrance scene, the music and cinematography were so awesome. Zooming around the room showing every character in the same pivotal spot....this movie is a work of art no matter what the jaded sheeple masses say, any fans of this movie should always stick to there guns on your opinion of this awesome fucking film.
I'm sorry, but as much as I wanted to like this movie and to delve into its "subtext" and "connect" I just couldn't. The pace was slow yet rushed and the fact(which seems to be the biggest complaint) that you had to read a comic book to even begin to understand the film was ridiculous. Stylistically, I will give Kelly credit. It is a different film, but just because it was different doesn't mean it was daring or even good. This movie is a joke and the ending was insulting.
I really don't think you had to read the comic to understand the movie. The comic is a "prequel". It just supplements the movie but it doesn't actually reveal anything major that occurs in the movie.

Literally the worst movie I've ever seen! Why? No movie NOT A SINGLE ONE should have a required piece of reading to go along with it. The fact you only got half the story unless you bought the 20 dollar companion comic book is retarded.
I'm sorry but this movie is awful, and I'm sad my friend faved this clip! The movie doesn't make any sense and Richard Kelly is a dick. No really... I met him, he's a complete tool.
dude this movie is deeper than just another comic turned to movie like fucking spiderman or something, not everything needs to go by the same plot over and over, it's something about CA, our everyday life and how it ties in with a higher life/form when chips are down or something, lol
Oh so you spoke to Richard Kelly and asked him that? Cuz I did. I spoke to Richard Kelly and you know what he told me? He said that the movie is whatever you want it to be. It's the same thing he said about Donnie Darko cuz he's an ASS.
The movie is not deep. It's pretentious and idiotic. And you do realize that it itself is a comic book movie right? That you're getting half a story and that they made the other half into a comic?! In order to get everything you have to buy a 20$ COMIC! LAME!
It is sad, I missed this movie when it came out at the theaters. Thank goodness for cable TV. I got to see this top notch MOVIE, Viva Southland Tales. I hope more people find out about this one of a kind movie, thank you Hollywood, CA....
Memory Gospel is perfection. This movie is a truly an original. It sets itself aside from the typical Hollywood norm. If you enjoy a movie's plot and underlying meaning being spoon fed to you, like 90% of Hollywood Blockbuster movies are, then I can guarantee you will not enjoy Southland Tales. Understanding this movie requires some thought, a little research, an open mind and some imagination (a little more work than reaching for a re-fill of popcorn).
@abcjc1 It was the end of the world, the ending is actually a minor interpretation of the book of revelations. It was said by the true neo marxs (the weird creepy people in the private blimp room) that when the 2 met and connected it would tear another hole in the fabric of spacetime and the world would end. Taverner being god, I could go on explaining it all but theres just too much Id be 300 chars. past the limit.
@moraleer yeahhh i totally agree with you!i watched this moie so many times and never understood it. but now im older and understand alot more. i love the theme to this movie and the plot. great movie,i also love the soundtrack to this. great songs. Memory Gospel is the best one! it feels soo relaxing to listen to it. nice and mellow
This movie, is simply that a movie. I personally enjoyed watching it. Using a creative perception to form a personal interpretation made this movie very enjoyable, plus a pretty decent sound track helped. "Wave of Mutilation" by the Pixies? Love that scene.
Yeah, but to those that can't help whining and complain, just realize that you are, just whining and complain.
Krysta Now is evidently partly psychic and can see the future. So. in a sense, she knew that she would be dancing there in that point in time. But this could also be happening all in Boxer Santeros' head as he seems to be in an alternate universe (through his time traveling). Hence the name "Memory" Gospel Singers. Somebody else is welcome to chime in with their view on this.
I think it has something to do with destiny, fate, or god's will or something.. Or as ecletro says, it has something to do with Krysta's psychic powers..
But, personally I think it as the way the movie should have been, and it is.
And with that I meen: being a "science fiction, comedy, drama, musical, political, sinister, dark, colorfull, magical and extremely crazy" movie...
There's no other way this movie could have been. "It had to be this way".
Yeah this "movie" was based on a 3 part graphic novel(s) written by Richard Kelly, the director. The books are probably alot better then this carp shoot, but I'll never know. Richard Kelly ain't no Tim Breton that for sure. The real victims here are the actors that were involved in this shitty movie. (Notice how none of them has comeout with anything since...)
You just don't like it because it challenged you to use your brain. This movie was extremely genius and the only way you really could appreciate how true this alternate over exaggerated universe is you'd need to watch it more than once.
i didnt like it cuz he tried to do three to four movies in one. if i wanted to see those, i wouldve seen them by themselves not mish-mashed together. I'll just stick to donnie Darko which is his true masterpiece
First, to all the nay sayers, your displeasure is understandable. But what you may not realize is that this movie requires an "instruction manual" to understand it. that's right, where it kinda goes wrong is that you would have needed to have read the prequels in order to get all of the deeper meanings. Then you'll probably have to watch/go to internet/watch again to get all the symbolism. For a thinking person, it's great. Others, not so much.
This was the worst god awful movie I've ever seen. I just had an arguement with my roommate as to why this sucked so much ass (He liked it, but he is a little off). I was an hour into this "moive" and I hadn't the slightest clue what it was about...like a drunk incoherent man tripping on srooms, this movie made no sense. I wish Wal-Mart sold "time" so I can get back the 2+ hours lost to this garbage.
well u just didnt understand it see the thing is u have to have half a brain and be able to actually think about a movie and not just watch things explode to keep u entertained
You know my socially inept roommate told me something similar. I thought about the movie and its still shit...and here's why:
Anytime you have to read a book to understand a movie should not be made into a movie.
The movie itself tried to tie 3 story lines together that made absolutely no sense, and that whole symbolism bullshit only works is people have understand there meanings.
Bottom line is I can piss and shit in a jar and call it art...you call it 'Southland Tales'
your not supposed to understand it the first time your supposed to watch it a few times to understand it I didn't get it either but I've only seen one and a half times
Don't you think any movie that couldn't be understood the first time or maybe even the 2nd time should never have bee made in the 1st place? Or maybe it was just poorly made...either way this is a shitty movie with B list actors. Actors who will be fortunate enough to land another job after being in this waste.
I understand that you're frustrated. But you also have to understand that different movies are made for different people, and different people like different movies. Maybe you prefer Captain Nemo. Because you don't care about the symbolism, doesn't make it a bad movie. Many of the actors seem to have found other work, and I wish them success. Sarah Gellar as Krysta Now really shines in this movie (and this clip proves it!) and will go onto bigger things. As soon as she has her baby any day now;)
I was actually watching the behind the scenes footage and from it Sarah is actually an extremely intelligent actress. I appreciate her so much more after this movie, but personally I'd like to see her perform a role unlike anything we've seen her in.
If you really want to get into the full understanding of it you might want to check out nassim haramein , red ice creations, lenon honor and terence mckenna

this is the worst piece of garbage ever produced, no narrative, no continuity, no plot, awful...retarded....worthless movie. Two and a half hours I'll never get back. trying to sound all intelligent saying how you got it but no one else did only makes you sound like an idiot
i thought it was loosley based around "Cat's Craddle" by Vonnegut. For the record, I enjoyed it....you still might be right about the rubbish part though.
the movie is really pieces of briilliance that sit amoungst oddness, his music to scene choices really cannot be beaten, ever. period. and sure the movie drags and bites off more than it can chew, but its moment of pure geniues overpower any faults. just my opion, cuz ppl are really drawn on this one haha
Ce ched euvre est tout simplement emouvent e passionant apres Donnie Darko et Southland Tales ,Richard Kelly devient pour ma part un tres grand realisateur qui a su impose son univers.
This movie was on last night (4/29/09) and I didn't understand it really. Like I didn't get the whole parallel universe thing how they're Two Rocks and Two Seans.

I think this is a really bad movie, but ther is something that draws me to it? its like I want to like it but I cant because of the films pace is so slow
and Ive seen it loads and i couldnt tell u a dahm thing about it i.e dont judge a book by its cover
and dont spend £13 on a dvd only because you liked donnie darko during your self harm period.
What draws you to it is that it's so bad it's brilliant. When I first saw it, I couldn't believe it even exists. I still can't. But I still can't get enough of it.
great soundtrack. the movie... uh... the safest thing to say that if storyline, dialogue and acting aren't important, this is one of the best movies of the early 21rst century. I was facinated by the movie both as a train wreck and its little bits of brilliance here and there. It's very ambitious but it's not really deep.
Southland Tales is Richard Kelly's maginificent take on Vonnegut's novel Cat's Craddle. it's very easy not to understand if you are not familiar with KV's absurd yet witty novels. also, i think it's very very difficult to make a movie that leaves you flabbergasted in the first 30 minutes just to make all the sense in the world after that. good job for richard kelly, he did it perfectly.
I watched it on Sky premiere last week, watched the first 40 minutes then decided I had to start again on the +1 channel as was totally lost, I missed the first cpl minutes originally, only stumbled on it whilst flicking. I loved it, never heard of it before that night, but within 5 minutes knew it was a perfect acidy film. Watching it from the beginning didn't really help me comprehend it though if i'm honest :)
Didn't fully understand it in any way shape or form, which is why I loved it, something that makes you think, rather than mainstream blow shit up cop movies etc etc. I believe it is meant to be open to interpretation though, which makes it even more special. Maybe it didn't help my comprehension that i watched it on acid on saturday night, but it definitely made it very enjoyable,it rocked.
Agreed! This film was amazing I didn't know what to expect and I didn't know what to think afterwards. A few days after watching this I'm still WTFing you've given the best definition of it!
One thing though...I was gonna watch this film stoned but thought I'd watch it normal next time I'm gonna be watching this stoned and hopefully get a HD copy some of teh scenes esp the zepplin was beautiful. I could only imagine what u felt watching this on acid!
I think before anyone can start criticising this film, the three books which are the prelude should be read as that gives a background sense of what is happening and helps to make sense of it.
Agreed. I liked it a lot, but the more I saw it I see that it's loosely done. And the people who rave about think that they're so much better than everyone else because they think that they "understand" the concept of the movie. Please it's a common motif.
Basically it's a big budget arthouse film. while I had some challenges with the film itself, I did appreciate the avant garde direction and storytelling. Personally, I don't believe most people think they are better than anyone else just because they "understand" the film -- I think it's a matter of simply not "dissing" it just because it's different. There ARE some memorable moments in the film and some good performances.
Agreed, but I believe there is a certain level or arrogance that follows the fans of this movie. The movie was difficult to follow (and I watch very obscure, abstract films), the plot lacked sense, and the message was simply diluted by the length of it all. Overall it needed to be concentrated, and re-envisioned.
Yes, I've been reading the comments here and I must agree, you have a point about many of the fans. It's a shame but not all inclusive. The movie "grew" on me after a very painful first try out. You can now say I am a fan, but hardly arrogant. Just a fan of good and sometimes merely "interesting" films. I enjoyed our very productive and civil convo. Peace my friend.
I didnt understand this film at all for me it was a total head fuck lol. but for some reason i found this scene touching maybe it was the music, also i love sarah mg, and the song teen horniness is AWSUM lol and i love the quote "were a bi sexual nation in denial" so i am therefore a fan of this movie.... but still dont have a clue wats happnin 3rd time i watched lol!
You guys ever notice that only mental midgets and assholes rated this movie badly. But its only natural for the worthless losers because its hard to keep the attention of stupid people with the mentality of a six year old.
lmao awsum comment... and i agree although this movie isnt my usual taste and i didnt understand it (ima retard lol) i can appreciate how amazing it is... i dont know wtf is happnin in this scene but i still find it touching smg is beautiful too x
well, i mean i dont really get it, but i defiantly like and understand certain aspects. most of it were not supposed to get anyway and im sure richard kelly probably doesn't either haha.
lolol funny because my two older brothers (24 and 27) thought this movie was weird and they didn't like it because they didn't get it but im only 15 and i get it and i just adore his movies.

dude this movie is deeper than just another comic turned to movie like fucking spiderman or something, not everything needs to go by the same plot over and over, it's something about CA, our everyday life and how it ties in with a higher life/form when chips are down or something, lol
bigdog776 2 years ago
Oh so you spoke to Richard Kelly and asked him that? Cuz I did. I spoke to Richard Kelly and you know what he told me? He said that the movie is whatever you want it to be. It's the same thing he said about Donnie Darko cuz he's an ASS.
The movie is not deep. It's pretentious and idiotic. And you do realize that it itself is a comic book movie right? That you're getting half a story and that they made the other half into a comic?! In order to get everything you have to buy a 20$ COMIC! LAME!
daftbottv 2 years ago
the only thing thats lame is pussy ass fucks who thinks all movies have to have the same plot

@moraleer so at the end of the movie was it just the end of boxers world(his life), or did the world actually end, i got a little confused
abcjc1 1 year ago
@abcjc1 yes the end, they had torn time by creating two double people
plif576 1 year ago

One of the best scenes in a movie.

What does she mean by it had to be this way???
MichaelSunny 2 years ago
Krysta Now is evidently partly psychic and can see the future. So. in a sense, she knew that she would be dancing there in that point in time. But this could also be happening all in Boxer Santeros' head as he seems to be in an alternate universe (through his time traveling). Hence the name "Memory" Gospel Singers. Somebody else is welcome to chime in with their view on this.
eclectro 2 years ago

Sirajt81 2 years ago
worst movie ive ever seen. kelly was trying to be smart while being bizaree which he got with darko then he got a bigger budget and.....yea, crap.
JordanSayz 2 years ago
You just don't like it because it challenged you to use your brain. This movie was extremely genius and the only way you really could appreciate how true this alternate over exaggerated universe is you'd need to watch it more than once.
Sn0wboi 2 years ago
i didnt like it cuz he tried to do three to four movies in one. if i wanted to see those, i wouldve seen them by themselves not mish-mashed together. I'll just stick to donnie Darko which is his true masterpiece
JordanSayz 2 years ago
Truth be told this should have just been a miniseries.
Sn0wboi 2 years ago
No, batshit insane and over-the-top doesn't automatically equal doesn't genius. That's retarded.
TCBProductionz 2 years ago
First, to all the nay sayers, your displeasure is understandable. But what you may not realize is that this movie requires an "instruction manual" to understand it. that's right, where it kinda goes wrong is that you would have needed to have read the prequels in order to get all of the deeper meanings. Then you'll probably have to watch/go to internet/watch again to get all the symbolism. For a thinking person, it's great. Others, not so much.
eclectro 2 years ago
this is the best scene of the movie but damm, i was lost the hole time
usdmriv64 2 years ago
This was the worst god awful movie I've ever seen. I just had an arguement with my roommate as to why this sucked so much ass (He liked it, but he is a little off). I was an hour into this "moive" and I hadn't the slightest clue what it was about...like a drunk incoherent man tripping on srooms, this movie made no sense. I wish Wal-Mart sold "time" so I can get back the 2+ hours lost to this garbage.
Sirajt81 2 years ago
well u just didnt understand it see the thing is u have to have half a brain and be able to actually think about a movie and not just watch things explode to keep u entertained
beanodonnell 2 years ago
You know my socially inept roommate told me something similar. I thought about the movie and its still shit...and here's why:
Anytime you have to read a book to understand a movie should not be made into a movie.
The movie itself tried to tie 3 story lines together that made absolutely no sense, and that whole symbolism bullshit only works is people have understand there meanings.
Bottom line is I can piss and shit in a jar and call it art...you call it 'Southland Tales'
Sirajt81 2 years ago
what book i never knew there was a book i just watched this great movie
beanodonnell 2 years ago
your not supposed to understand it the first time your supposed to watch it a few times to understand it I didn't get it either but I've only seen one and a half times
moviebuff8883 2 years ago
Don't you think any movie that couldn't be understood the first time or maybe even the 2nd time should never have bee made in the 1st place? Or maybe it was just poorly made...either way this is a shitty movie with B list actors. Actors who will be fortunate enough to land another job after being in this waste.
Sirajt81 2 years ago
I understand that you're frustrated. But you also have to understand that different movies are made for different people, and different people like different movies. Maybe you prefer Captain Nemo. Because you don't care about the symbolism, doesn't make it a bad movie. Many of the actors seem to have found other work, and I wish them success. Sarah Gellar as Krysta Now really shines in this movie (and this clip proves it!) and will go onto bigger things. As soon as she has her baby any day now;)
eclectro 2 years ago
I was actually watching the behind the scenes footage and from it Sarah is actually an extremely intelligent actress. I appreciate her so much more after this movie, but personally I'd like to see her perform a role unlike anything we've seen her in.

great soundtrack. the movie... uh... the safest thing to say that if storyline, dialogue and acting aren't important, this is one of the best movies of the early 21rst century.

Stones1664 3 years ago
Didn't fully understand it in any way shape or form, which is why I loved it, something that makes you think, rather than mainstream blow shit up cop movies etc etc. I believe it is meant to be open to interpretation though, which makes it even more special. Maybe it didn't help my comprehension that i watched it on acid on saturday night, but it definitely made it very enjoyable,it rocked.

alberichnigel 3 years ago 3
Agreed. I liked it a lot, but the more I saw it I see that it's loosely done. And the people who rave about think that they're so much better than everyone else because they think that they "understand" the concept of the movie. Please it's a common motif.
ThePontifex 3 years ago
Basically it's a big budget arthouse film. while I had some challenges with the film itself, I did appreciate the avant garde direction and storytelling. Personally, I don't believe most people think they are better than anyone else just because they "understand" the film -- I think it's a matter of simply not "dissing" it just because it's different. There ARE some memorable moments in the film and some good performances.
hollywoodcity 3 years ago
Agreed, but I believe there is a certain level or arrogance that follows the fans of this movie. The movie was difficult to follow (and I watch very obscure, abstract films), the plot lacked sense, and the message was simply diluted by the length of it all. Overall it needed to be concentrated, and re-envisioned.
ThePontifex 3 years ago
Yes, I've been reading the comments here and I must agree, you have a point about many of the fans. It's a shame but not all inclusive. The movie "grew" on me after a very painful first try out. You can now say I am a fan, but hardly arrogant. Just a fan of good and sometimes merely "interesting" films. I enjoyed our very productive and civil convo. Peace my friend.
