@BillWa what you're saying is true but the jackscrew was supposed to be replaced according to the maintenance log. You wouldn't need to find the problem yourself when the problem was written in the maintenance log. If that section of the tail was never checked then it should be, you can't just assume that there is no hidden damage because you can't get into that area of the plane

The flight crash sound is not only not funny, it is deplorable. It is tragic enough to hear the ATC tapes without interjecting that sound. You should be ashamed.
What does a nose dive have to do with g's dude? Take an aeronautics class. Does virtually nothing. Pulling out at high speed or nosing over will cause g's for a few seconds.
Lack of grease on the jack screw assembly for the horizontal stabilizer caused a cross-thread. The metal that was shaved off wrapped around the screw causing a jam mid-flight. The pilots tried to get the stabilizer moving by working the controls, but this just caused the system to overload and fail catastrophicaly. They had no chance.
@105Raptor Serious. Try to Check out National Geographic's 'Seconds From Disaster' episode on this accident. They go into more detail, but it came down to saving a few bucks over safety. The jack screw assembly should have been replaced, but it wasn't over the protest of a maintenance supervisor who blew the whistle on the airline. it was preventable. This is also why I dont fly.

Besides, aibus has the lowest cost maintance, so money is bieng saved over boeing. a C inspection on an airbus is cheaper then a B inspection on a boeing or McDonnald douglas.

There have also been many flights SAVED by the pilots, that wouldn't have been by a computer, we just don't hear about them; the pilots are doing their job. We hear about the 'pilot errors' made, which are mostly only human errors. Air France had a couple accidents that were due to the computer control: if the pilot were in complete control these wouldn't have happened. Pilots>Computers

Boeing planes are superior to Airbus planes because they permit the pilots to disengage the computer. This was a direct result of Alaska Airlines cutting corners on maintenence. A mechanic had TRIED to tell his supervisor that the jack-screw mech on the pitch actuator was out of spec, but good old Alaska Airlines had to try to save a buck. Corporate America at its finest.
The Captain Dan Thompson used to be in my old squadron the 730th REBELS. He was a darn good pilot! Total mechanical failure. Pitch trim actuator failed.
Yup. At that time, Alaska was skimping on maintenaince bigtime, and got shit kicked for it. Now they're one of the safest airlines in the world, and haven't had a major crash since then.

What does a nose dive have to do with g's dude? Take an aeronautics class. Does virtually nothing. Pulling out at high speed or nosing over will cause g's for a few seconds.

Lack of grease on the jack screw assembly for the horizontal stabilizer caused a cross-thread. The metal that was shaved off wrapped around the screw causing a jam mid-flight. The pilots tried to get the stabilizer moving by working the controls, but this just caused the system to overload and fail catastrophicaly. They had no chance.

@105Raptor Serious. Try to Check out National Geographic's 'Seconds From Disaster' episode on this accident. They go into more detail, but it came down to saving a few bucks over safety. The jack screw assembly should have been replaced, but it wasn't over the protest of a maintenance supervisor who blew the whistle on the airline. it was preventable. This is also why I dont fly.

@1JackTorS Gi fly on airbusses, you're in the hand s of computers who know what their doing. There has never been a crash due to airbus computer errors. Besides, aibus has the lowest cost maintance, so money is bieng saved over boeing. a C inspection on an airbus is cheaper then a B inspection on a boeing or McDonnald douglas.

@sonicfan7 I would disagree with you. There have been many accidents due to the computer being "in control". There have also been many flights SAVED by the pilots, that wouldn't have been by a computer, we just don't hear about them; the pilots are doing their job. We hear about the 'pilot errors' made, which are mostly only human errors. Air France had a couple accidents that were due to the computer control: if the pilot were in complete control these wouldn't have happened. Pilots>Computers

@sonicfan7, you are wrong. The recent Air France crash into the Atlantic Ocean was likely caused by the pilots not being able to disengage the computer and fly the plane manually. Boeing planes are superior to Airbus planes because they permit the pilots to disengage the computer. You can't even spell McDonnell Douglas correctly, which shows me that you don't know anything about airplanes. You're a retarded moron.

@1JackTorS You could board one flight per day, and it would be 26,000 flights before you were involved in an accident. Even then, the chances of surviving a catastrophic accident are greater than not. Air travel is extremely safe, especially Airlines. It is only the perception of danger, because when an accident occurs in aviation, it tends to have higher casualty rates than auto accidents, because of the amount of people onboard an aircraft. I agree that this is scary but it is a rare occurance

This was a direct result of Alaska Airlines cutting corners on maintenence. A mechanic had TRIED to tell his supervisor that the jack-screw mech on the pitch actuator was out of spec, but good old Alaska Airlines had to try to save a buck. Corporate America at its finest.

The Captain Dan Thompson used to be in my old squadron the 730th REBELS. He was a darn good pilot! Total mechanical failure. Pitch trim actuator failed.

Yup. At that time, Alaska was skimping on maintenaince bigtime, and got shit kicked for it. Now they're one of the safest airlines in the world, and haven't had a major crash since then.
