I believe that was a Mustang Bass Lee was playing then. It is a short scale bass (about 30" as opposed to 34") like the Vox Bill Wyman model he used later. He switched to a standard size Rickenbacker in Refugee. I loved the video. Fenders are often less forward in the mix, which may have been why Lee switched to the Vox.
Notice the Vanilla Fudge theme music & the opening credit: this is The Nice performing at the Marquee Theatre, televised in France. I found the piece visually exciting but if one listens to the lengthy intro, honestly, it stays in the same key too long. Doesn't make for a memorable soundtrack, but everyone watching must have been mezmerized. More! or rather, Encore!
Yes! Keith Emerson and Lee Jackson going CRAZY!!!!! This is what the Nice were all about, especially Keith.
I don't care what anybody says about Lee Jackson's vocal ability. Great singer and fantastic bassist. Been a fan of the Nice for the past 10 years.
Unfortunately, since I was born "too late" in my life, I wish that I would've lived in that time period and witnessed all those great bands that came out of England in the mid-late 60's.

I lasted until 1:20 and the noise was too much - yes, it WAS noise, a noise that ANYONE can make, and if anyone would like to dispute that, fine...... sue me and take me to court. I'm sure a jury will agree with me! It takes TALENT to randomly hit sequences (within the 12-note scale) that that make people think "hmm, yes, I liked that!"
@MrAttPatt .... I'm surprised you lasted THAT long with absolutely no idea... BTW what do you play? The one eyed trouser flute?!? And how long you last with that, eh? Patt... more like PRATT..!!!!
I know the Nice backed Roy Harper on the song "Hell's Angels" on Flat Baroque and Beserk, but I swear the bassist on the Folkjolkopus album sounds just like Jackson and his Vox.
@damphear2 As you probably know, O'List left the band during the sessions for the Nice's 2nd album. It's really apparent that Emerson, Jackson, and Davison are the show.
where is all this footage coming from. is the bbc being nice and saying hey we have stuff you've never heard of. cuz really i recall only reading about one full show and some bits. but this is just amazing
Whoa, where is Lee Jackson's Vox Bass? Every photo and or video Lee is always playing a Vox (if you know the one I am speaking of, it is a very distinctive looking bass), with some mod-style guitar strap. This looks like a Fender which also sounds much different.
I don't care where it's from, it's just brilliant to see footage of The Nice and Keith especially being really creative and putting on a great show. He had a sheer aggression and exuberance in The Nice which got lost in the monster which was (and still is, occasionally) ELP.
It's simply PERFECT!

A great reminder of the greatest ever Rock band.....!
Particularly welcome in the light of the recent Emerson & Lakee debacle....
What makes you think this is from a gig at the Marquee....?
You've made an 'ole man really happy!!!!!!

@tonewheelkev Was the recent Emerson/Lake tour that bad?
GoblinGirl 1 year ago
@tonewheelkev The striped bunting hanging over the stage, and the semi-circular shape are key giveaways that this was at The Marquee.
Amazing vid. And is that a Precision Lee is playing? The shape of the body is a little odd, but it might have been customized.
And poor Davy O'List. He gets to stand there playing the same note for 5 minutes while Emerson solos. Again.
