I used to live in a very tall building named after Lionel Hampton. In fact, it is the tallest building on that block uptown for miles around! You could see all of down town including of course the NYC skyline; Even as far as New Jersey ( witch is where i currently reside ) It's on 131 st. 410 st. Nicholas ave. In Harlem N.Y. and the building next door is named after his wife Gladys Hampton. Truly this brings back memories!
Those of you who noticed the absence of an upright bass might've notice an early 1950's Fender Precision Bass in the hands of one of the bandmembers.
Lionel Hampton was among the very first recording artists to endorse the then-new Fender Precision Bass.
As far back as the 1940's (before the Fender Precision Bass was available)Hampton's band featured an electric upright bass (which I believe was made by Rickenbacker).
Lionel Hampton comes from a time when you had to practise real hard to develop your musical talent to make it in the music industry.
Whereas today, way too many of todays pop stars rely on the clothes they wear or the bullshit wimpy "Attitudes" they put on to make it.
What sad times we now live in.
Obviously there are many exceptional musicians in the world today but unfortunately most of them are not pushed by the major record labels because they don't have the right look ??
Lionel was of course famous for playing the vibes but was a great drummer as well. A true showman at everything he did, watching him kind of reminds me of Sonny Payne.
:-) I must have seen this video dozens of times, and today is the first time I ever noticed those guys peeking through the curtains to the right of the stage, and watching Hamp do his stuff, then applauding at the end!!! I'd have given a lot to be one of those guys....:-)
There is a long version of Benny Goodman's Sing Sing Sing scene in Hollywood Hotel that features lionel on the vibraphone. It got removed last year and I've been looking for it since. I love his drum playing, but he shines even more on the vibraphone where he is a true master. The video I was referring to also featured Gene Krupa on the drums. It was I believe, tagged onto the Sing Sing Sing scene video. A wonderful post, thanks for sharing it.
My father took me and a friend to see Lionel Hampton in the mid 70's. Of course he had a drum solo and began to do some fancy work with the sticks like any good drummer but it kept getting crazier and crazier. It ended up with him using four sticks, two in the air and two in his hands and he threw them higher and higher until they were disappearing above the stage curtains. That's when they turned out the lights... and after a moment turned on a strobe. Incredible!!! Never missed a beat!
The year was 1930. The place was a recording studio in California. The 17-year-old Hampton already had quite a reputation as a drummer with the Les Hite band when Louis Armstrong arrived in Hollywood, minus a drummer, to record some of his arrangements. At the NBC studio, the vibraphone sat abandoned in a corner, used only to play the network's famous bing-bang-bong station indentification.
You new drummers out there remember PEART USES 20+ drums to get sound, if that's what you call it....LIONEL USES ONE!! THAT TAKES SKILL..AND NO ELECTRONICS..RAW TALENT. AWESOME!!
@xthatfatguyx NEIL PEART COULDN'T EVEN HOLD LIONEL HAMPTON STICK BAG!! AND THERE IS NO CAMPARISION, PEART ISN'T EVEN IN THE SAME CLASS. LMAO!! LIONEL'S MAINSTREAM ISN'T THE DRUMS, ITS THE VIBES DUMB ASS!
@1divahead a bit of a narrow-minded statement... you can't shouldn't knock 1 person to prove a point about the other. both of them have raw talent! one just has a bigger kit...
as a very young teen , I actually got to meet Mr. Hampton after a concert. He was nice enough to come out and sit and chat a bit.
Even though he was primarilly known as a vibe player, I was amazed at his drum set playing. He had all the old time stick tricks and juggling sticks with a strobe light while he played. It was amazing!
For me it's more than moving to experience not only that musical execution, but as well the amount of joy he obviously puts in all his playing ... great! ... and thanks for giving it as well to the younger like me ... :-)
Hampton doesn't miss a lick and he puts PEART, BARKER, LEE, TO SHAME. SHOW THEM HOW IT'S DONE LIONEL AND THIS DUDE DOESN'T PLAY DRUMS AS A MAINSTREAM....WHAT A PRO...KILLS ASS!!
Lionel was originally a drummer. When Gene Krupa left Benny Goodman in 1938, Lionel sat in on drums, and played on radio broadcasts until Goodman found a permanent replacement. Goodman also allowed Lionel to record under his own name for RCA Victor in the late '30s. They are among his best recordings.
Lionel Hampton and his band performed at Freedomland in the Bronx in the early 1960's. I was lucky enough to see that show. LH was the consumate performer. I remember the energy he had and all the grunts and growls he uttered as he became engrossed in the music. And what music it was!
I loved it. Never knew he was an all around percussionist. Thought he just played vibes, xylo and marimba. Really wish there were more musicians like this around.
I have checked out a lot of his stuff since I have seen this. He's just incredible. Not only does he have the talent, he is a great showman and looks like he is having a great time.
There is another drummer who is just as good, please check out Joe Morrello 1961 solo, awesome one handed rolls. Mind blowing..you will all enjoy his talent. Studio Drummer.
I'm fully aware of Morrello's awesomeness, but just to correct you...he wasn't a studio drummer, but the drummer for the Dave Brubeck Quartet, one of the greatest small jazz groups ever. Not many can do a drum solo in 5/4 time like he did on the live version of Take 5... Incredible...
Just to comment on Hampton, his vibe playing overshadowed what an awesome drummer he was. He easily was an equal to Rich and Krupa.
I simply typed in tom solo, in hope of finding a tom-based drum kit solo that I might be entertained by. I found this. This is mind-blowing, what talent, and precision. With all those tricks he never made a single mistake and stayed in beat the whole time, so inspiring. This is drumming at it's finest.
The person who so matter of factly states that Lionel Hampton is not a drummer is himself an idiot and probably doesn't know a paradiddle from a flam tap.
I remember seeing this clip when I was a kid, and I carried the image with me a long time. I thought maybe It'd exagerated over the years, but no - this is as amazing as I recall and then some.

At a recording session in 1930, a vibraphone happened to be in the studio, and Armstrong asked Hampton (who had practiced on one previously) if he could play a little bit behind him and on "Memories of You" and "Shine"; Hamp became the first jazz improviser to record on vibes.
YayaSenklip 4 years ago
Hamp started out as a drummer, playing with the Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band as a youth. His original idol was Jimmy Bertrand, a '20s drummer who occasionally played xylophone. Hampton played on the West Coast with such groups as Curtis Mosby's Blue Blowers, Reb Spikes, and Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders (with whom he made his recording debut in 1929) before joining Les Hite's band, which for a period accompanied Louis Armstrong.
