  • The Governor.

  • I used to live in a very tall building named after Lionel Hampton. In fact, it is the tallest building on that block uptown for miles around! You could see all of down town including of course the NYC skyline; Even as far as New Jersey ( witch is where i currently reside ) It's on 131 st. 410 st. Nicholas ave. In Harlem N.Y. and the building next door is named after his wife Gladys Hampton. Truly this brings back memories!

  • Ouiiii ! Définitivement l'un des meilleurs batteurs de TOUTE l'histoire du jazz. Et le fils naturel, de l'IMMENSE Chick Webb.

  • Those of you who noticed the absence of an upright bass might've notice an early 1950's Fender Precision Bass in the hands of one of the bandmembers.

Lionel Hampton was among the very first recording artists to endorse the then-new Fender Precision Bass.

As far back as the 1940's (before the Fender Precision Bass was available)Hampton's band featured an electric upright bass (which I believe was made by Rickenbacker).

    Bassists, take note...

  • marvelous!

  • Lionel Hampton comes from a time when you had to practise real hard to develop your musical talent to make it in the music industry.

Whereas today, way too many of todays pop stars rely on the clothes they wear or the bullshit wimpy "Attitudes" they put on to make it.

What sad times we now live in.

Obviously there are many exceptional musicians in the world today but unfortunately most of them are not pushed by the major record labels because they don't have the right look ??

  • one of the greatest,if not the greatest, PERCUSSIONIST of the 20th century.

  • @revelarts777 I should've changed the desription a LONG time ago. Haha. Thanks.

  • AMAZING!!!

  • one drum two sticks one amazing drummer.nuff said!

  • Lionel was of course famous for playing the vibes but was a great drummer as well. A true showman at everything he did, watching him kind of reminds me of Sonny Payne.

  • this is beautiful :')

  • :-) I must have seen this video dozens of times, and today is the first time I ever noticed those guys peeking through the curtains to the right of the stage, and watching Hamp do his stuff, then applauding at the end!!! I'd have given a lot to be one of those guys....:-)

  • CIRCUS!

  • AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWESOME

  • fantasztikus!!!

  • 4 people like Travis Barker and not the true Classics...

  • There is a long version of Benny Goodman's Sing Sing Sing scene in Hollywood Hotel that features lionel on the vibraphone. It got removed last year and I've been looking for it since. I love his drum playing, but he shines even more on the vibraphone where he is a true master. The video I was referring to also featured Gene Krupa on the drums. It was I believe, tagged onto the Sing Sing Sing scene video. A wonderful post, thanks for sharing it.

  • You all dig that crazy beat now yer hear !

  • love it love it love it thanks for this great video!!!!

  • My father took me and a friend to see Lionel Hampton in the mid 70's. Of course he had a drum solo and began to do some fancy work with the sticks like any good drummer but it kept getting crazier and crazier. It ended up with him using four sticks, two in the air and two in his hands and he threw them higher and higher until they were disappearing above the stage curtains. That's when they turned out the lights... and after a moment turned on a strobe. Incredible!!! Never missed a beat!

  • top notch so good

  • agh! why did the camera pan up when he has playin the bit with all the rim and stick clacking! i wanted to see that!

  • Absolute proof that Hampton was one of the finest percussionists and possibly the greatest showman of his day.

  • Damn!

  • the contemporary dance could be invented by this great man!

does anybody knows how old he was in this video?

  • the contemporary dance could be invented by this great man!

  • Lionel Hampton egy zseni!!!:)

  • the finest man who ever smiled on the stage

  • Now that's magic!

  • Follow that!

  • It's from concert in Belgium, 1958

  • IDOLO!!! un genio

  • as great a drummer as lional was he always aknowledged buddy as being the greatest in the world bar none, check it out.

  • does this song have a name? and oh yeah :o i was wondering wether i could find him on wiki and if that site gives enough information about him ^^

    thanks anyway :o :)

  • The year was 1930. The place was a recording studio in California. The 17-year-old Hampton already had quite a reputation as a drummer with the Les Hite band when Louis Armstrong arrived in Hollywood, minus a drummer, to record some of his arrangements. At the NBC studio, the vibraphone sat abandoned in a corner, used only to play the network's famous bing-bang-bong station indentification.

  • One of the greatest jazz musicians for sure

  • DAYMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  • LIONEL YOU KILLED IT!!

  • TOP Talent.. Lionel..!

    Awesome solo .. 2 sticks 1 drum..!!

  • Just ONE Drum?....

    epic!!!...

  • this takes talent i wwould like to see the drunners of today do this

  • You new drummers out there remember PEART USES 20+ drums to get sound, if that's what you call it....LIONEL USES ONE!! THAT TAKES SKILL..AND NO ELECTRONICS..RAW TALENT. AWESOME!!

  • @1divahead

are you really trying to draw comparisons between peart and hampton? ha ha ha haha ha! they are two completely different monsters.

  • Comment removed

  • @xthatfatguyx NEIL PEART COULDN'T EVEN HOLD LIONEL HAMPTON STICK BAG!! AND THERE IS NO CAMPARISION, PEART ISN'T EVEN IN THE SAME CLASS. LMAO!! LIONEL'S MAINSTREAM ISN'T THE DRUMS, ITS THE VIBES DUMB ASS!

  • @1divahead

how is what you said different from what i said?

and im sure one would smoke the other on their own respective instruments. thats why they are famous. fucking moron.

  • @xthatfatguyx PEART is famous because people like you buy his records, not because he is a GOOD DRUMMER. HARDLY.

  • @1divahead a bit of a narrow-minded statement... you can't shouldn't knock 1 person to prove a point about the other. both of them have raw talent! one just has a bigger kit...

  • which song is this (i mean the name of the song) i think it's one of the most amazing videos in tube

  • Judging from the ending, it is FLYING HOME. Lionel always played it.

  • great video! anyone knows what year that was filmed?

  • as a very young teen , I actually got to meet Mr. Hampton after a concert. He was nice enough to come out and sit and chat a bit.

Even though he was primarilly known as a vibe player, I was amazed at his drum set playing. He had all the old time stick tricks and juggling sticks with a strobe light while he played. It was amazing!

  • is that a young abe lincoln in the background?...

  • HA! It totally is!

  • Comment removed

  • good

  • Comment removed

  • For me it's more than moving to experience not only that musical execution, but as well the amount of joy he obviously puts in all his playing ... great! ... and thanks for giving it as well to the younger like me ... :-)

  • I wouldn't say he puts Peart to shame, but Barker and Lee and especially the talentless Charlie Watts...abso-freakin-lutely, he puts the ti shame.

  • Hi,

Saw him at the Capital Theater when I was just a kid back in the 50's in DC. He was fantastic!!!

    Iris AKA Feisty Mom

  • Minkia!!

  • Hampton doesn't miss a lick and he puts PEART, BARKER, LEE, TO SHAME. SHOW THEM HOW IT'S DONE LIONEL AND THIS DUDE DOESN'T PLAY DRUMS AS A MAINSTREAM....WHAT A PRO...KILLS ASS!!

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, those cats in the back are all jealous;-) Great group of talent here!

  • is it just me or is that trombonist in the back abraham lincoln?

  • OH! My Cat .... What A Drummer!!!!!

  • Just killer.

  • * Jaws drop * O____O

  • i think he made the hamster dance

  • LEGEND!

  • if only he was born like 20 years later....

  • c est un magicien

  • I thought there was no such thing as perfect....well, this sure was a perfect performance.

  • der wahnsinn

  • Einfach genial!

  • Wow. I didn't realize he was also a drummer.

Insane drummer, even more insane vibraphonist...

  • I think he is a percussionist, taht´s why he plays vibes, drums, xylophone, etc. Amazing video anyway : )

  • Lionel was originally a drummer. When Gene Krupa left Benny Goodman in 1938, Lionel sat in on drums, and played on radio broadcasts until Goodman found a permanent replacement. Goodman also allowed Lionel to record under his own name for RCA Victor in the late '30s. They are among his best recordings.

  • See the sticks dance. Pure artistry. Thx.

Feel free to check out my little jazz n swing blog, if you like. See you there.

    Bestest,

    Brew "Stickman" Light

  • L E G E N D!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mitico

  • Hamp ♫♫♫♫♫

  • badass and a half

  • Always, he is the best

  • Lionel Hampton and his band performed at Freedomland in the Bronx in the early 1960's. I was lucky enough to see that show. LH was the consumate performer. I remember the energy he had and all the grunts and growls he uttered as he became engrossed in the music. And what music it was!

  • I loved it. Never knew he was an all around percussionist. Thought he just played vibes, xylo and marimba. Really wish there were more musicians like this around.

  • he was originally a drummer man!

he's fucking retarded on the drums he's WAYY too good

  • I have checked out a lot of his stuff since I have seen this. He's just incredible. Not only does he have the talent, he is a great showman and looks like he is having a great time.

  • I just love this!! lovew the sounds he makes when he plays, like AAAAHHH!! from nowhere

  • Check out the solo between Lionel Hampton and Duffy Jackson, this will show what a really good drummer he was. Studio Drummer

  • LOL, I just now noticed the stage hands peeking around from behind the curtain to see him play.

  • There is another drummer who is just as good, please check out Joe Morrello 1961 solo, awesome one handed rolls. Mind blowing..you will all enjoy his talent. Studio Drummer.

  • I'm fully aware of Morrello's awesomeness, but just to correct you...he wasn't a studio drummer, but the drummer for the Dave Brubeck Quartet, one of the greatest small jazz groups ever. Not many can do a drum solo in 5/4 time like he did on the live version of Take 5... Incredible...

Just to comment on Hampton, his vibe playing overshadowed what an awesome drummer he was. He easily was an equal to Rich and Krupa.

  • hate to be the drummer behind him

  • He looks a bit like Blakey at 2:41 though eh?

  • I would giving anything to see him play.

  • ''exellent''

  • I just found out today that my grandfather was very good friends with this man.

  • DAM! I SHOULDA NAMED MYSELF THE CHUPRACABRA!!! lol

  • Wait, what?

  • as a username, instead of axeman721 lol

  • HOLY CRAP!!! no way? u lucky bustard!

  • davvero emozionante..

  • Dave Clark's head would explode if he saw this.

  • Wow... just... wow. I'm a drummer, have been for years... those beats, that sticking... legendary!

    Simply amazing. What a treasure!

  • I simply typed in tom solo, in hope of finding a tom-based drum kit solo that I might be entertained by. I found this. This is mind-blowing, what talent, and precision. With all those tricks he never made a single mistake and stayed in beat the whole time, so inspiring. This is drumming at it's finest.

  • that's the power of lionel, baby.

(get it, instead of pinesol, ha ha.)

  • Many increadible drum solo's out there but this one's still my #1 favourite!

  • Take a roll!!!

  • Lo marque como favorito muucho antes de ver el final...

    IMPRESIONANTE!!!

  • i have no clue wat the funk that means!!! CHUPRACABRA!!!!

  • Remembering Lionel Hampton 6 years after his death, rest in peace.

  • random question, did lionel hampton have any children

  • No, he didn't have any children.

  • i like how he smiles. it makes me feel good inside.

  • Same hear, man. :D

  • awesome if we see that nowadays everybody thinkd is some computer FX!

  • loove his performances!!!

    Great :D

    chhuu

  • This just goes to show that if you give a great percussionist/showman one drum that they will blow your mind!

  • Oh hell yeah!!!!!. A lot of folks only knew of his keyboard skills however, drumming was always part of the act. What a performer

  • By keyboard do you mean Vibraphone since that's what he's best known for?

  • Yes I was talking about his vibraphone skills. I wish someone would do his life story as a big budget movie.

  • You Drummer's out there like Lionel, check out Louie Bellson's solo were he uses double bass in the Day! Studio Drummer

  • Are you kidding me?

  • How talented can one man be? Never knew LH could do this. Thank you very much.

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooww

  • amazing !!!

Il est aussi bon percussioniste que vibraphoniste

  • holy shit!!!

    he's orgasmic!!!

    :]

  • OH MY GOD! What can be done whit 1 floor tom!

  • nice...wow, that thing's tuned higher than my 12" tom!

  • and such a fantastic vibes player

  • Lol at 2:03. Nicely done, and having fun, too!

  • how can u have such an amazing solo on just a tom

  • exactly, and I can´t even make a decent drumroll on a snare...he was awesome.

  • Wow.

  • I love this guy! He's so awesome and you can really see that he's having fun on stage!

  • whoaaaa

  • WOW! This guy rocks!

  • The person who so matter of factly states that Lionel Hampton is not a drummer is himself an idiot and probably doesn't know a paradiddle from a flam tap.

  • A legend on the vibes and drums!!

  • wow, all these yrs...i never knew that he was a drummer!

  • i could so do this...NOT!!!jesus man...and on the one tom as well.damn that dude is class!

  • I remember seeing this clip when I was a kid, and I carried the image with me a long time. I thought maybe It'd exagerated over the years, but no - this is as amazing as I recall and then some.

  • My . . . God.

  • At a recording session in 1930, a vibraphone happened to be in the studio, and Armstrong asked Hampton (who had practiced on one previously) if he could play a little bit behind him and on "Memories of You" and "Shine"; Hamp became the first jazz improviser to record on vibes.

  • Hamp started out as a drummer, playing with the Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band as a youth. His original idol was Jimmy Bertrand, a '20s drummer who occasionally played xylophone. Hampton played on the West Coast with such groups as Curtis Mosby's Blue Blowers, Reb Spikes, and Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders (with whom he made his recording debut in 1929) before joining Les Hite's band, which for a period accompanied Louis Armstrong.

  • Lionel Hampton first off is not a drummer, thought I'll say he's actually a melodic musician a vibraphonist. Now that just tells you how versatile he is as a musician. He is one of the kings, he's up there w/ Lious Armstrong as far as im considered.

  • And then there was Big Sid Catlett...

  • this was super awesome

  • Amazing!!

  • buddy rich had all the speend and no style, gene krupa was all style and soul.

  • Yeah, the only thing Buddy has over Krupa and the rest of them, is technical proficiency, but Krupa towers far above him in style, feeling, showmanship, soul, class, and in musical taste, as does Hampton when he drums, both men are much more fun to hear and watch than Buddy Rich is!

  • ditto, hampton is as good as it gets. check out stevie wonder on drums on youtube, he does an amazing solo.

  • Yeah, Krupa's kind of overrated as a good drummer. He helped develop the hihat and tomtoms and was amazingly influential, but it doesn't make him the best. Buddy's the best.

    So is hampton!

  • Max Roach is an underrated drummer. I have the battle between he and Rich. He does some very nice stuff.

  • the drummer in hamptons band was curly hamner. hamp could out play krupa any day of the week but not buddy rich.buddy owned them all.he was everybodys daddy.

  • bouncing, stick flips, and taps, amazing not easy!!!

  • Easy but Great! Just bouncing, lol

  • Amazing.

  • Whilst playing in the street one day Only trying to "make a buck" I raised my BumFlute to my Arsch And found it had become quite stuck!! I blew and farted very hard Only trying to get it loose!!! It sounded like the mating call Of the wild Norwegian moose!!! The crowd thought I had changed my style To the jazz that they call "free"!!! And then...I guess you know the rest! They tied me to that goddamm tree!!! © 2007 Bruno Leicht
  • An incredible musician and an equally amazing performer. Wonderful.

  • Lionel Hampton could beat Buddy Rich in a drum battle with only 1 drum.

  • Wow!!! He truly FEELS the music!!! All those noises he made "EEEAAAAAA RRRAAAAAAA" haha an amazing an entertaining performance!!!

  • It looks like that's a Trixon Floortom judging by the legs. What an amazing drummer!

  • Amazing!

  • amazing!! i love his stick flips and accent patterns!!

  • Lionel and Sonny Payne are the most entertaining drummers I've ever seen in my life!

  • There are no words... no words... He is the very best there is!

  • Aweseome, love the stick tricks. Who's the other drummer in the background on the kit?

  • Amazing for sure!

  • woooooooooooooooooooooooow!!!!!!!!

  • You guys wanna see a good solo Done by a KID search for homzy bopish drum solo or Ryan mccloskey drum solo
