  • Fritz Wunderlich remains the absolute benchmark for lyric tenors: he died (tragically) at the height of perfection, but had he lived...........? Lohengrin, Erik, Walther, possibly Parsifal; maybe not Siegmund or Siegfried but who knows? We can only guess........

  • Münchinger is among the best in Bach oratorios. I don't like interpretations like Harnoncourt

  • Extraordinario, no me canso de oirlo.

  • Always gives shivers down the spine. Such a wonderful voice and piece of St Matthews Passion. 1964 was such a long time ago.

  • Wunderlich es Bach, INMORTALES

  • The pathos in his voice, no matter what range, brings instant tears to my eyes.

  • Fantastic! thank for sharing this!

  • Maravilloso Bach, Wunderlich interprete genial ¡¡

  • Maravilloso, unico, genial Wunderlich.

  • Fritz was an aweful singer - and he came from the area I live (Kusel). That makes me a little bit proud!

  • @camposi awful? schrecklich? Du meinst, nehm ich an, awesome! :D

  • @Bluedino549

Bach!

  • The voice is so powerful and profound, it completely overwhelms me every time I listen to this piece. Fritz may have well been the greatest singer on earth.

  • Ablacsia can you tell me when this was recorded?

  • @Kunsterfreut Die Aufnahme stammt aus dem Jahre 1964.

  • @Ablacsia dankeschön^^

  • Absolument magnifique ...

  • Fritz Wunderbarlich ..!

  • @CuriosusSum :-)

  • @CuriosusSum Inmortal, genial, Gloria para JS BACH y para el R.I.P.

  • ¡Sublime!. Bach y Wunderlich ¡vaya combinación!. Gracias por compartirlo.

  • Thrilling!! I was part of a performance of this great work in the spring of 1957 in Ann Arbor's Hill Auditorium; Josef Blatt, Maynard Klein conductors. All the balconies were full of choirs, the music, the singers and the orchestra were fabulous. I get shivers every time I hear this work. Thank you for posting this with Fritz Wunderlich, he is just the best! Why was he so reckless? , . . But for the shoestrings . . we'd still have him! A treasure lost.

  • no words

  • wundervoll beeindruckende Leidenschaft...

  • Magnifico !

    Grazie per il post

    è splendido !

  • merveilleuse interprétation.

  • Unsurpassable!

  • Nearly brings me to tears every time I listen to this. Wunderlich touches my heart.

  • I simply think that is an mistake sing Bach in a cold mechanicall or "ultra ligth" way, this is an internal dramatic music ....and Wunderlich sings the ideal way.

cause of that , I love the modern views, but I prefer Richters conception of sound......and the singers...were far better.

Wunderlich, Ludwig, Gundula Janovitz, Edith Mathis, Dieskau ...

  • Warm, smooth, clear tone - yet passionate. My several Wunderlich uploads include no oratorio and I was unfamiliar with this one.

I find that Peter Pears, Hermann Prey, Elly Ameling and Fritz Wunderlich came together for this recording in 1964. Reports applaud the grace and style of it. Marvellous!! TY !!

  • Great!

  • Great eternal Bach! The best version of this aria I've ever heard! Wonderful, amazing voice! Great artist! Wunderlich is one of my farourite tenors of all time. Bravo!

  • This is amazing! there are a lot of great tenors, like Peter Schreier, Horst Laubentahl, Paul Agnew, ... who sing the Matthaüspassion, but none of them is so good as Wunderlich. He sings it just perfect...

  • My favorite Bach tenor! What a rare treat.

    Thank you so much.

  • what a clear and beautiful tone!

  • Simply put, no one will ever match Wunderlich's passion!

    Merveilleux, simplement merveilleux!

    Merci a vous pour partager!

  • Incredibly beautiful solo singing, perfect pacing and what a sweet oboe!

  • Incredibile! Meraviglioso! Ma quell'uomo non respirava mai? Non ci sono parole...

  • God, his breath control in this is superhuman. Truly awe-inspiring.

  • You said it. That last run in the B section is freaking amazing.

  • I've tried doing it and the only way I can is if I don't sing the other bits leading up to it and just take a deep breath and sing that particular phrase. Buggered if I know how he is able to without even sounding like he's struggling. Must be because he started as a horn player and developed his breath control then. Doesn't make it any less amazing

  • "Soli Deo Gloria."-J.S. Bach (1685-1750)

  • En español se la conoce como "La Pasión según San Mateo"; wonderful music that sorrounds my life with an spiritual "aura" that makes me feel, that there is something Divine waiting for all of us, out there...somewhere.

  • Wonderful!!!, what else can we say...simply wonderful.I know about someone that is in heaven, enjoying very much this lovely interpretation by one of my "alltime favourites". Wunderlich gives us a master class in how yo sing in a charming beatiful way. Thank you "Viva Tenors"

  • ...splendid...

  • Thank you so much for uploading this. It is really great. So beautiful. Fritz Wunderlich is now one of my favorite tenor.

  • SO AMAZING!. I love him, this is so, so beautiful

  • Such a handsome tone and wonderful phrasing! Sometimes he scoops up a little intentionally. Is it stylistically correct to do so?

  • Will you upload also "Geduld, wenn mich falschen Zungen stechen"? Fritz is a star!

  • @alepeccia FW wasnt a "star" he was a genius

Admirable!!

  • absolutely the best version on this masterpiece... moves me deeply - to tears...

  • I heard this so many, many times from CD and am very glad that now everyone can listen to this on Youtube!

The piece and Fritz Wunderlich are congenial

    Mobezi

  • man kann aber die beiden welten verbinden..:-)

  • bellisimo como siempre wunderlich!!

  • @amacine: so true, so pure. :-)

  • It's so peaceful. When I listen to this kind of music I feel that I'm in harmony with myself, but not so much with the outside world. Well, that's a bit of a problem.

  • Glenmed, You have made me a Wunderlich convert! Wow - I would almost rather listen to him than anyone ... well .. I agree with Shaggy that Geduld, Geduld would be great to hear also. Thanks!

  • Wunderlich is wonderful but the choir is in lullaby mode all the time.

  • The first part of the text which is sung by the choir means "So our sins will fall asleep", so you can't blame them. ;)

  • Wunderlich IS Bach....

  • Fritze ist anfang und ende aller musik

  • I get a shiver when listening to that.

  • Wunderlich is always so extraordinary. Thanks for this. Is there any chance of putting up his version of Gedult?

  • WOW

    NAMASTE

  • Excellent!! Thank you for sharing this

  • You're welcome!
