Fritz Wunderlich remains the absolute benchmark for lyric tenors: he died (tragically) at the height of perfection, but had he lived...........? Lohengrin, Erik, Walther, possibly Parsifal; maybe not Siegmund or Siegfried but who knows? We can only guess........
Bach!
The voice is so powerful and profound, it completely overwhelms me every time I listen to this piece. Fritz may have well been the greatest singer on earth.
Thrilling!! I was part of a performance of this great work in the spring of 1957 in Ann Arbor's Hill Auditorium; Josef Blatt, Maynard Klein conductors. All the balconies were full of choirs, the music, the singers and the orchestra were fabulous. I get shivers every time I hear this work. Thank you for posting this with Fritz Wunderlich, he is just the best! Why was he so reckless? , . . But for the shoestrings . . we'd still have him! A treasure lost.
I simply think that is an mistake sing Bach in a cold mechanicall or "ultra ligth" way, this is an internal dramatic music ....and Wunderlich sings the ideal way.
cause of that , I love the modern views, but I prefer Richters conception of sound......and the singers...were far better.
Warm, smooth, clear tone - yet passionate. My several Wunderlich uploads include no oratorio and I was unfamiliar with this one.
I find that Peter Pears, Hermann Prey, Elly Ameling and Fritz Wunderlich came together for this recording in 1964. Reports applaud the grace and style of it. Marvellous!! TY !!
Great eternal Bach! The best version of this aria I've ever heard! Wonderful, amazing voice! Great artist! Wunderlich is one of my farourite tenors of all time. Bravo!
This is amazing! there are a lot of great tenors, like Peter Schreier, Horst Laubentahl, Paul Agnew, ... who sing the Matthaüspassion, but none of them is so good as Wunderlich. He sings it just perfect...
I've tried doing it and the only way I can is if I don't sing the other bits leading up to it and just take a deep breath and sing that particular phrase. Buggered if I know how he is able to without even sounding like he's struggling. Must be because he started as a horn player and developed his breath control then. Doesn't make it any less amazing
En español se la conoce como "La Pasión según San Mateo"; wonderful music that sorrounds my life with an spiritual "aura" that makes me feel, that there is something Divine waiting for all of us, out there...somewhere.
Wonderful!!!, what else can we say...simply wonderful.I know about someone that is in heaven, enjoying very much this lovely interpretation by one of my "alltime favourites". Wunderlich gives us a master class in how yo sing in a charming beatiful way. Thank you "Viva Tenors"

It's so peaceful. When I listen to this kind of music I feel that I'm in harmony with myself, but not so much with the outside world. Well, that's a bit of a problem.
Glenmed, You have made me a Wunderlich convert! Wow - I would almost rather listen to him than anyone ... well .. I agree with Shaggy that Geduld, Geduld would be great to hear also. Thanks!

Münchinger is among the best in Bach oratorios. I don't like interpretations like Harnoncourt
