@kundun5 I know, I'm not sure why she had to bring up the fact that she was black and managed to win. It's like, Mo'nique, that ugly period in American history is over now, seriously, so stop mentioning it and acting like you're some trailblazer for racial equality.
@lemonrain13 I think you need to look up some Santorum on blacks vids or Gingrich on Blacks or Rush Limbaugh on blacks. We blacks avoid these statements affecting us everyday but we hear them. We hear them and they hurt.
What an utterly condescending acceptance speech and completely disrespectful of the other nominees. Is she trying to say that had someone else won it wouldn't have been for a worthy performance. Looks like in her head she had already decided that her's was the only Oscar worth performance... awful attitude.
@popaddict If you would have read up on what she was talking about instead of assuming, you would know what was going on. Normally, w/ Oscars, you go around promoting your film, trying to woo people into voting for you, Ex: Cher 1983. Mo'Nique didn't have time to do it. She had family obligations and other things she deemed more important. THAT is what she meant by "Performance and not politics."
"showning that it can be about the preformance not politcs" best she makes it look like she was the only black woman to win though she should she is really to only one i can say derved this no matter what race now octavia "sorry viola" hype see why monique didnt go the year later halle berry to only black woman to get an lead oscar volia wasnt even in much ocatvia crap about time they give to the few black woman that get lead parts.

Her real life personality weather ghetto as you put or not has NOTHING to do with HER ROLE in this movie, your just a hater!

Well Said
@The1987Kid Jamie Foxx in Ray wasn't stereotypical... Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost...although some would argue it is a stereotypical role...but im up for a debate...
I don't know about you guys, but the other nominees' performances were tiny tiny tiny atoms compared to Monique's powerhouse performance that year. Just sayin'.
@drxwnedxwxrld However people may feel about her or her career personally, there is no denying that she knocked this one out of the park. Just like Natalie Portman did the next year with Black Swan.
@TheOGKSJ Mmhmm.. I would say Monique was the only choice that year (I would honestly shake my head [even more than I already do] at the Academy if Monique didn't get at least 95% of the votes for Supporting Actress).
I thought Natalie in 2010 had really good competition though. Annette, Jennifer, Nicole (she's excellent when playing depressed women -- seriously), and Michelle would have been good choices for the oscar. Of course Natalie was superb too.
@drxwnedxwxrld lol i think they just needed nominees to fill up the nominations. this was the best movie of the year... gabourey sidibe should have won. total bull shit. sandra bullock was good and all, but come on!!! her performance was heartbreaking.
@teenagefirework1 -- If Octavia AND Viola don't win the Oscar this year, I swear I will quit watching altogether...(and yet, I probably won't, but I'll think about it really, really hard.)
@HotBaritoneMess so far Octavia Spencer won a Golden Globe for Supporting Role, let's hope she wins again for the Oscars as well as Viola Davis. Let's hope that the Academy makes it about the performance this time again rather than the politics, as Mo'Nique would say.
@jephreyproduction Sorry, but this performances are soooooo weak, Michelle Williams, Berenice Bejo, and so many other actresses gave stronger performances, I don't know what's the fascination with this movie, it's so pretentious, of course will win an oscar, and Octavia havei tin her hands, A WASTED OSCAR, THAT'S BAD!

I was having a discussion about her winning the Oscar with my drama teacher in March. What do you think about the movie? And why do you think people would say that?
VERY well deserved and I am so glad that the Academy got this one right since they get so many others wrong !! It takes a lot of guts to play a monster like that and she Nailed it !! xoxo
The angriest acceptance speech ever, she's so affected. She deserved to win, though...look at Maggie having to smile cuz Mo'niques people behind her are screaming
Wow she has lost a lot of weight. And she was excellent in the film. Such a versatile actress; she can be hilarious and serious and overall amazing. God bless her. She deserved it :)
i hate her in the film, she made me cry in the film. she was unbelievable. oh my god, she deserve more than an Oscar! she's absolutely amazing! what a powerful, spectacular, fantastic actress!!!

@88narayandivya Oprah should NOT have been on that stage, but I agree with you otherwise. And so does Mo'Nique - she said so in her speech. The world saw it because Oprah touched it. But I don't think Mo'Nique was promoting her own performance. The Academy is infamous for their politics, look it up. And you can look up the cases of black movies/directors (The Color Purple/Spike Lee) that fell victim to those politics. Mo'Nique didn't just come out of nowhere with all of that. It's truth in it.
@88narayandivya I doubt it. This performance is considered to be one of the best in the supporting actress category in oscar history.. I'm sure the politics wouldn't have even stopped this win. If any other nominee won this night, the academy would have GONE TO HELL. I mean, look at the line up that year.. Penelope Cruz in Nine (????? and I am not a fan of her -- only her figure but not her acting), and the others were just lacklusters/fillers.
@88narayandivya Well she got a standing ovation because of her performance. Her performance was shattering.....one of the greatest performances I have seen in a supporting role. She's a comedian doing that kind of role. That movie sent a very strong message, and trust me, politics is involved in the oscars. Too much of it. Remember The Reader being nominated for best picture when it should not have been? We all know it should have been The Dark Knight or The Wrestler, 2 superior films.
@mdonoyan1 If the standing ovation was given with respect to her performance in the film, then you can't fault the audience, she was simply shattering. But if they gave her a standing ovation simply because she was 'black', I don't want to be accused of being racist, but do African-American actors expect the rest of Hollywood to feel sorry for them simply because they're 'black'? I have seen 'Precious', btw.
@88narayandivya Are you fucking serious with your comment? SHE WON BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS BECAUSE SHE WAS THE BEST AND SHE GOT A STANDING OVATION BECAUSE PEOPLE AGREED SHE WAS THE BEST, STUPID!
@mdonoyan1 f.y.i not that many, only 13 african americans have ever won the academy award including mo'nique, it's not that long and very small, and is not a over dramatic speech, she was paying respect. When the small minority wins over the huge majority it's a big dramatic moment, especially for a moment that doesn't happen too often, f.y.i.
@mdonoyan1 This wasnt about her being black, this was about her performance....stop looking at the race card ok? Geez....that speech was truthful and honest. She is a comedian doing a role like that she can say whatever she wants!
A very well deserved win. How Mo'Nique managed to conjure up the emotional and monstrous portrayal of Mary is beyond me. It goes to show that given the right role, and the right director, anyone can deliver a jarring, Oscar worthy performance. I will never, ever forget the final scene between Mo'Nique and Gabourey Sidibe (who should have also won an Oscar IMO), and that is what makes an amazing film, leaving the viewer with some lasting impression.
i just watched SOUL PLANE this last weekend...how would have thought a few short years later, the loud-mouthed, horny black woman in that masterpiece would be winning an Oscar?...you go Mo!
@SantiagoOlaisola i'm tired of fat women taking pride. you can succeed if you are not fat, everyone is okay with that and nobody is saying otherwise. when it comes down to it, everyone likes something skinny (generally speaking). not to take away from everything she did. Mo'Nique was amazing in this film and she deserves every bit of praise for her wonderful performance. to make this about a skinny vs big woman thing misses the point entirely. "performance not the politics."
@totalintegrity If people aren't saying otherwise then why do magazines and shit like that refer to people like Melissa McCarthy and Mo'nique as plus size actresses instead of just actresses? Why do they end up on magazine covers as the worst beach bodies? People do care.
@AcademyAwardsPerson Ok I'm not condescending. I didn't display a superior attitude or try to say that I was better than anyone now did I? I was saying I'm proud because i'm overweight too so I've taken my share of crap over wanting to be an actor. I see her as a role model so for you to call me a moron is unjustified. I take enough shit in real life an don't need you to attack me on Youtube because you took my statement the wrong way.
@KortezNike I was torn between Mo'nique and Penelope too. Penelope morphed from a sex kitten to a comedic girlfriend to a suicidal jilted lover - all with the greatest of ease. And Mo'nique was raw and powerful. This was one of those occasions where choosing the "best" seemed silly.
I, love Monique! and well deserved! outstanding performence and she is funny and adorable..and yes! she can go Ham! but what's the point? Monique in my oppinion is a lady and funny...here in Hawaii we love her and her show still on THE PARKERS..
@pinkylei23 actually she very classy, Its not her fault that she only get casted for chitelen circut movies, oh and btw who the f*ck asked for your opinion
@pinkylei23 Actually she is very classy, Its not her fault she only gets casted in chitilen circut movies, I would have love to see her in Up in The Air, or Nine, but A woman of her exterior cannot play thoughs type of parts so...
don't get me wrong, monique was PHENOMENAL in this movie!! and she deserved the award most....BUT her speech, when she says that it was about the performance and not about the politics, but then thanks oprah and tyler perry who promoted the film--that seems a little political to me.....just saying....
@jkbrait What she meant by the performance not the politics was that she pretty much refused to go from hollywood party to hollywood party to kiss ass to get votes as is very common to do. She wanted the work to win not her ass kissing. That's what she meant by the performance not the politics.
@jkbrait he said that cause if it wasnt for tyler and oprah she wouldnt have gotten the chance to show her performance to the moive go-ers and hse wouldve gotten the chance to win the oscar, so she was just thanking them for giving her a chance to show another side of her and her heartbreaking performance in Precious
Right after I left the showing of "Precious" at my local movie theater, I knew Mo'Nique was gonna win that award. It was such a perfect portrayal of a disturbed and powerful character. Not even the politics within the Academy could have stopped her from winning.
she was amazing i'm glad she won because all the other performances were mediocre. the only reason anyone from the movie 'up in the air' was nominated was because clooney was in it and he made the film popular. that movie was just not oscar material.
who would have thought nikki parker would end up winning an oscar?! i thought her top accomplishment in life was landing professor ogilve!

That may possibly be the most dignified award acceptance I've seen.
tonybklyn 3 months ago 4
okay what the fuck, so many black actors and actresses before her have won oscars. such an unnecessarily over-dramatic speech
mdonoyan1 3 months ago
@mdonoyan1 If the standing ovation was given with respect to her performance in the film, then you can't fault the audience, she was simply shattering. But if they gave her a standing ovation simply because she was 'black', I don't want to be accused of being racist, but do African-American actors expect the rest of Hollywood to feel sorry for them simply because they're 'black'? I have seen 'Precious', btw.
88narayandivya 3 months ago
@88narayandivya They stood up because here performance was the best of the year! She was simply stunning in that role, she made you believe it!!
iamrawtocool 3 months ago
@88narayandivya Are you fucking serious with your comment? fuck!
wellofthesouls 1 month ago
@88narayandivya Are you fucking serious with your comment? SHE WON BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS BECAUSE SHE WAS THE BEST AND SHE GOT A STANDING OVATION BECAUSE PEOPLE AGREED SHE WAS THE BEST, STUPID!
wellofthesouls 1 month ago
@mdonoyan1 f.y.i not that many, only 13 african americans have ever won the academy award including mo'nique, it's not that long and very small, and is not a over dramatic speech, she was paying respect. When the small minority wins over the huge majority it's a big dramatic moment, especially for a moment that doesn't happen too often, f.y.i.
Punkout16 3 months ago
@mdonoyan1 This wasnt about her being black, this was about her performance....stop looking at the race card ok? Geez....that speech was truthful and honest. She is a comedian doing a role like that she can say whatever she wants!
stylus850 3 months ago
When Mo'Nique's nomination was announced, she knew the Oscar was hers. Not even Academy politics would've ruined her moment.
Oh wait...
Mo'Nique 2010: I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics
Tom Hooper 2011: I would like to thank the Academy for showing that Oscar-bait films rule over true film-making craft
88narayandivya 3 months ago 2
that was one of the most beautiful speeches i have ever heard, so honest and real.

She's still a overly dramatic, annoying, fat ass, sensitive, Cliche, Loud mouthed, ugly, terrible acting (in other movies), waste of space.

So happy she won. But she committed career suicide by saying her first words. I really hope I'm wrong on this.

@SantiagoOlaisola size had nothing to do with it , and it silly that you think that way!

"performance not the politics."
totalintegrity 2 months ago
@totalintegrity If people aren't saying otherwise then why do magazines and shit like that refer to people like Melissa McCarthy and Mo'nique as plus size actresses instead of just actresses? Why do they end up on magazine covers as the worst beach bodies? People do care.
SantiagoOlaisola 1 month ago
@SantiagoOlaisola How condescending can you be? Moron.
AcademyAwardsPerson 2 months ago
@AcademyAwardsPerson Ok I'm not condescending. I didn't display a superior attitude or try to say that I was better than anyone now did I? I was saying I'm proud because i'm overweight too so I've taken my share of crap over wanting to be an actor. I see her as a role model so for you to call me a moron is unjustified. I take enough shit in real life an don't need you to attack me on Youtube because you took my statement the wrong way.

KortezNike 5 months ago
@KortezNike I was torn between Mo'nique and Penelope too. Penelope morphed from a sex kitten to a comedic girlfriend to a suicidal jilted lover - all with the greatest of ease. And Mo'nique was raw and powerful. This was one of those occasions where choosing the "best" seemed silly.

don't get me wrong, monique was PHENOMENAL in this movie!! and she deserved the award most....BUT her speech, when she says that it was about the performance and not about the politics, but then thanks oprah and tyler perry who promoted the film--that seems a little political to me.....just saying....
jkbrait 6 months ago
@jkbrait What she meant by the performance not the politics was that she pretty much refused to go from hollywood party to hollywood party to kiss ass to get votes as is very common to do. She wanted the work to win not her ass kissing. That's what she meant by the performance not the politics.
646guy 6 months ago
@jkbrait I think she may be reffering to the films subject matter, very few films feature it and get recognised.
admiralYulauren101 6 months ago
@jkbrait he said that cause if it wasnt for tyler and oprah she wouldnt have gotten the chance to show her performance to the moive go-ers and hse wouldve gotten the chance to win the oscar, so she was just thanking them for giving her a chance to show another side of her and her heartbreaking performance in Precious
smartiew88 6 months ago
@jkbrait She said that in the sense that her role was far from being politically correct.

She totally deserved that Oscar. She had amazing acting in that movie.
TheNewEmphinix 6 months ago 79
Right after I left the showing of "Precious" at my local movie theater, I knew Mo'Nique was gonna win that award. It was such a perfect portrayal of a disturbed and powerful character. Not even the politics within the Academy could have stopped her from winning.
andrew12494 6 months ago 84
@andrew12494 you probably knew it because she'd won every award prior to the oscar.
0casteloencantado0 3 months ago
She is soo eloquent.
BonoForAmerica 6 months ago 4
she was amazing i'm glad she won because all the other performances were mediocre. the only reason anyone from the movie 'up in the air' was nominated was because clooney was in it and he made the film popular. that movie was just not oscar material.
