A wonderful version of this piece, and spectacularly performed by Maurice André. Excellent and brilliantly performed! Regardless of how the piece was originally played, I like Maurice André's interpretation.
Trumpet Choir!!!! Good to see that someone used to have guts when they performed this piece! Back during the baroque period trumpet was played LOUD. Not sure how I feel about the crappy choir in the background though....that's the kind of crap that andre rieu would pull
@kotetsu131 What makes you think baroque natural trumpet was played LOUD? These trumpets are of a smaller bore, and have a compact sound. Combined with the more delicate lip technique, the trumpet of the baroque era, especially in a musical (vs. a signaling) setting was almost certainly a softer instrument. Have you seen much period performance? Have you set next to great baroque trumpet players? I'm not sure you have.
@aleksozolins Yes I have actually, and I have also written a research thesis on the whole use of them in Haydn's time, and based on anecdotal evidence written down from people during that time period they were played much more boisterously than those of today. That's actually one of the reasons they are notably absent in the vast majority of his symphonies, they were considered grotesque during the classical period. Trust me I know they typically aren't played any louder than average now...
@kotetsu131 Sorry, but written down anecdotal evidence and thesis don't do anything for your argument. You'll have to keep in mind that what was considered "grotesque" even 100 years ago was quite different. Remember, there was a riot during the first performance of the Rite of Spring. There was no electronic amplification in 1700. Do you play the natural horn or trumpet? If you do, you'll know that in any lyrical setting, you can't impose your will on it as you do on a modern instrument.
Je veux cet arrangement!

Don't mean to sound ignorant, but his trumpet has 4 valves, although he doesn't seem to use the 4th one. What kind of trumpet would this be?

One of the greatest musicians of the century! And the discussion about the way this music was played in the past is very interesting.
