knew when I heard him in 1966 playing guitar with the 'Revelles' in Chicago that this guy was special !! he riffed off the lick to 'Look Through Any Window' on a Rickenbacker and it was magic !! true guitar hero.
From one Guillory to another, Go Brother Man! I enjoy every tone you slip through all that talent that's YOU! I think you look like my family for sure. I wish I could pick up my guitar and level out some of the hills and mountains like you... I played Flamenco for many years in the 60s and in the 70s. Your guitar is a great instrument! Your voice is enlivening, and calls from afar to join the festival, fly to the stars! Now you're in the place where you can see all of our dreams: Sing!
It's been 10 years since Isaac's final gig at the Ullapool Guitar Festival. He was my best friend for many years. With love brother... I miss you so much... hope you're running a band up there. David
@gnowersark ummm i only have pictures of him holding me when i was a baby...and i have heard his cds many times.....but watching him play in these videos means a lot
Only just found this video - really nice to read all these wonderful tributes to a former colleague of mine - we had a band called 'Pure Chance' - Like everyone else, I still miss Isaac to this day - but his music will go on for ever
I had the pleasure of playing and hanging with Isaac in Europe in 1973. He took everything to a new level. I'm not only a better player today, but a better person as well because of our sweet weeks together.
I played once as front group for him at IT'S HERE in Chicago during the Joel Corey "uncola" era around 1972. He did a great rendition of Rainmaker. To this day I can only do Rainmaker and Wayfaring Stranger. The others are just so individually creative and hard to copy. I'd love to know how to do the riffs for this number but maybe some things ar best left to the ages. Thanks to whoever added the newest videos of him.
I knew Isaac in Palatka Florida in 1962. I was in a high school rockabilly band, and he was in the Illusions. We could tell he was playing way beyond our level even then. Great job, Isaac. See you in Jam Heaven.
I met Isaac around 1986 when I booked him at a folk club I used to run. We became mates and I got him a few gigs. Generous as always he credited me with his popularity in my area (Fylde Coast, Lancashire). We still miss him.
And hello to Vicki if you're reading this - got any chocolate!
Hes nothing short of agenius was Isaac, great all time folk guitarists.
I mean this is my favourite song he played, only saw it once but got me going haha, only saw him live once but was very impressed actually amazed id not heard about him before.
I love what he'd say between songs, him doing that lead work like at beyond the 12th fret like going over the guitar body, I wish I could do that!
Isaac was the man. We used to get to see him locally around 3 to 4 times a year. A treat and something to look forward to. Sadly missed. He always tried to get the crowd involved with singing or banging on the table.....and mostly he succeeded. That's what music is supposed to be about. Participation.
I had the pleasure of seeing him play and i rate all guitarists in folk it Isaac hes very sadly missed great man!
The way he plays rhythem and lead on accoustics just inspirational, I could only dream of being as good as him, no other guitarist has ever I dont think tried doing what hes done that I've seen around folk clubs.
could you please ask your freind what amplification, mixer and effects Isaac used to use. He came to stay wth me once when he was touring with john rebourne, thanx
thanks everso much for this post. as with many others here i was lucky enough to see mr G a few times in the 1980's, the first time by chance in a folk club in chelmsford, essex, when he replaced martin simpson at the 11th hour. after that i was hooked. thank you mr.G
I saw Isaac many times in the Essex UK area and am really pleased to see this video, you are reminded of just how good he was. I have all his solo Cd's and can recommend them all without hesitation especialy if you have a good system to play them on.
bauyb, I must have seen you at the same gigs, they were always special and Isaac always found time for a few words of encouragment to budding guitarists. He is sadly missed.
A DVD of him in concert would be really special. Chris.
Googled it while the second side was playing and ... yeah well there it was ... Isaac Guillory passed away on December 31, 2000 .... I could help the tears ... I'm sure his music will come back as Nicks did and I will certainly be getting the rest of his stuff ... sorry i never saw him ..cheers for the legacy fella ..
I walked into an OXFAM in Leighton Buzzard - waiting for my tyres to be changed. Flicking through the old vinyl, i spotted JJ Cale Okie Okie - mint for 3 Squid and this LP that looked quite cool - Isaac Guillory LIVE - 2 Squid ... never heard of him .. and i took them home. recognised the James Taylor number and popped it on my nottingham analogue - the sense of Nick Drack was overwhelming and i had strange thought that this man had left us too. Unbelievable stuff - just clean guitar genius!
I saw Isaac playing one of his Martin guitars in a little club in Otley, Yorkshire (uk) just a few months before he died. I was totally stunned and I remember being mesmerised by his fabulous playing. What an incredible musician and what a great loss to the music world and to us all. God Bless you Isaac.
I remember walking into the back of the B stage tent at Cambridge Folk festival about 20 years ago... Just wandering by out of idle curiosity. Guillory came on and I didn't pick my jaw off the floor for 25 minutes. Saw him four or five times after that, and miss him still. The best and most exciting acoustic player I ever saw live (and that sweeping comment includes Nick Drake, John Martyn, Richard Thompson and Martin Simpson).
@markgamon Yes he was a good man, patient, caring, and sharing. I saw him one evening hand his beloved takamine to a idiot and let him play. He let took advice on guitar and listened patiently as the moron tried to tell him how to play !!he gave advice back and genuinely listened to the man, remaining polite and calm as he was patronized and treated contemptuously. He was a real inspiration and easily loved i am sure. R.I.P Isaac
I wish I would've been able to go to one of his gigs =[ I think its amazing how everyone remembers where they were at the time when they heard him playing, just shows what an amazing experience it was =]
I recall seeing him at Ronnie Scotts Club(London) around 1977. He'd formed a band called "Pacific Eardrum" and they were supporting Stan Tracey's Quintet. Great guitar player who probably inspired guys like Tommy Emmanuel. RIP Isaac!
At a gig I remember being totally blown away by his (completely effortless) musicianship. At one point there was a problem with the PA so he walked off the stage to check the sound ALL THE WAY SUSTAINING A VERY COMPLEX RIFF... and he missed not a beat.
We were really pissed off though that there was a section of the audience that did not realize they were in the presence of a very special musician indeed who clearly achieved more than most of us do in a longer lifetime. Thank you Isaac.
I first saw Isaac with the Cryan Shames. He was playing bass and keyboard with them and, on one tune, BOTH AT THE SAME TIME! He was an amazing musician.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to preserve and share Isaac's work. Please, please let me know if there is ever a dvd, sincerely, #1 fan, Doug.
Arts center in Colchester, Essex, UK when I was 20...20 yrs ago now. A stunning experience. Never seen one man appear to play both lead and rhythm at the same time...amazin
Saw him 3 times.. Forget about what a fantastic player he was.. there are many.. he was a fantastic musician and player.. who made MUSIC a rare thing!
I saw Isaac many times and have to say that the man was not only a seriously talented and wonderful guy but so inspiring.
My son (now at uni and writing guitar music as well as performing) met him on an number of occasions and as I said, his inspiration has planted musical seed that continue to bloom even though Isaac died so young.
It's hard to compare his playing - well, anyone's playing to anyone else's, but ignoring that for now - to Tommy E, because there is so little of IG's stuff on here, but....MAN, is he smooth. It's like the neck has no frets and the strings have no windings.
What a talent. What a waste. At least I've found him and can start collecting another great player's music.
Man and instrument in perfect harmony, I had the pleasure of seeing him play 3 times in very close proximity and his technique and delivery was mesmerising. Sadly missed but will always live on through his recordings. More videos would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Plucked up courage to speak to Isaac Guillory after a concert in the Boat House in Cambridge England about 10 years ago. "Fantastic" I said I can't even imagine the a single bar of the arrangements you play" "Ah" he said "it all starts by imagining it" which is probably why I still can't play guitar. True genius guitarist. Well done for posting this clip it really does show how wonderfully fluid his style was.
