And if yours is the former, it's because some magazines compared it to beryl/compiz (which is, in a sense a 3D desktop - because it uses 3D acceleration).
mine was the latter. i guess if metisse doesn't use 3D acceleration that's a good point, but i was thinking that what makes either a 3D desktop is more along the lines of how it relays the elements of the desktop. in this sense metisse is definitely 3D. you can't fold or turn something on the z axis in a 2D world.
Actually, I think Metisse uses OpenGL (I was wrong). Well, I guess it would be 3D by your standards, but then so would multiple sheets of paper in RL, and they still show 2D, no matter how you turn them.
But yeah... we have to wait for the poster to reply what he meant by it.
there is a new linux website, it can direct you to many open source linux applications, it has a section explaining the workings of linux, it even has a page full of open source applications for apple computers and much more
Interesting concept - I might be interested in giving it a go. It seems to be a Windows Manager which is about managing windows, rather than whizzy eye candy.
I'm a website designer and an artist, I use sometimes as many as 6 programs at once, flipping between windows to copy/paste things from one program to another. All these window managing tools would be perfect for my work! The ability to be able to zoom out on the desktop in particular is great. This isn't just Eyecandy or features for features sake, these are useful for productivity.
I think its a matter of psychological interest that people would still pay hard-earned cash for something that has an equivalent - arguably better feature set. Its bizarre.
Did you see all those items in the context menu at 00:59, holy mother of gawd!!! They should be working on more important design and useability problems than what they're showing in the video.. The more items you have to select from, the more time you spend searching for what you want, the more time you waste.. I left Linux 2 years ago and it seems like it has only gotten worse since I left..
Yeah, so now you only have to deal with the kilometric menus on Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and, let's not forget, the Start|Programs list. Must be this damned Linux getting inside of Windows, too.
Now sit back and think: creeping featurism happens in all platforms. The difference is you can usually do something about it on Linux (since it's mostly open source/free software).
If you're comparing the latest Metisse stuff on Linux then you gotta compare to the latest version of office... And Office 2007 sure as hell doesn't have menus like that...
This doesn't show off the coolest parts of Metisse at all. I'm kinda confused why someone showed off these features set to music when it has a LOT better other features
If your phantasy is so crippled that you can't imagine how this can be VERY usefull in certain situations then I'm really sorry for you. One thing I like is the ability to "fold" a window to see whats underneath it.
This could be a list

"not a 3D desktop!" uhh what?

You have to redefine your question.
Is it: WTH was that about?
or: How come it is not?
My question is the later :-)
And if yours is the former, it's because some magazines compared it to beryl/compiz (which is, in a sense a 3D desktop - because it uses 3D acceleration).

Go Metisse! I prefer this over Compiz because it is actually useful.

Beryl is equally good for a web designer. I should know ;D

try Linux. i recommend the new Sabayon 3.4

I used 3.3 and it worked perfect out of the box on a Athlon XP 2500 + nVidia FX5600. This included all the neat special effects using Beryl.

I would... if you were talking about Metisse, which you aren't. The bloated context menu, as far as I see, is application related.

Now if you could tell us what the context menu of OpenOffice has to do with Linux or Metisse!?
el3ktro2000 5 years ago
good that you can 'turn' the window around - like turning a real piece of paper that you might be reading as you tilt your head.
This is such a basic function it's not funny. I guess everything has to be at right angles so people don't freak out.
blursst 5 years ago
I'm a Compiz fan what can I say. Compiz = nicer KDE/gnome stuff. Metisse = uglier WindowMaker quality stuff.
nucleocide 5 years ago
this can't beat beryl, it's too "useful"
papavb 5 years ago
I think the way Metisse zooms out to expose the workspaces and allows you to move and use the windows would be quite useful.

I guess thats better window managment, really, there is no easy way to view multiple windows.
