The playing on this track doesn't give Ronson guitar god status as it's more or (mostly) less the same way Craig Fuller played it on the original Pure Prairie League track. Fuller's take on it is way more impassioned than this, and it's a great shame that he isn't recognized for it.
Just curious, does anyone know where the pics of Mick, with a short haircut, wearing the Nudie suit came from or from what year? The only pics I've ever seen of him with a short haircut.
Just amazing guitar intro, one of the best ever in the history of music!
Have this album on Vinyl from when it was released. Gummo 7, ues you are right, I also saw Mick play this live in the studio on Old Grey Whistle Test, it was just effin awesome! Anyone who has this please post it!!
This song is also on the Pure Prairie League record, "Bustin' Out", which Mick Produced. Amazing, same song, exact same arrangement, even the same guitar licks but on the PPL record, it sounds about as country as it gets!
I have pictures from 1977 (3 years after this album) of me playing my new Les Paul through the Marshall stack that Mick lent me so I could rehearse,(I never got anywhere, I was just learning at the time) it was the stack he used when he played with The Rats.
To say he is missed would be an understatement....
@theuncletodd Yep, the record is "Bustin' Out". Ronson produced, co-wrote and even arranged and conducted an Orchestra on that record. Guy was a genius. I don't think PPL would have got as far as they did without his help. The 70's record industry created some odd teams, but it worked!
we miss you Mr. Ronson, but your music and your humanity and artistry that produced it are loved as much as always. wish you'd come back for a cup of tea, though. thanks and please rest peacefully forever.
I think part of the reason why Mick never got put into that group of guitar gods is because he wasnt trying to be one.
First and foremost, he wrote guitar parts to support the song, not to show off. He never put all his cards on the table.
However, Mick can tear up a jam without even trying. Search for his live solo in "Width of A Circle" on here. Easily rivals any of the classic guitar gods' solos.
he's a guitar god. simply he wasn't accredited as "member" of a band if not shortly with mott the hoople.
we can't say.. "he was the guitar player of a band called...." spiders were a kind of "support band" and not the "band"... i can't explain better in english, sorry
Fantastic song from a great album. Still have both on vinyl, one of which is on a short lived 'flexi' vinyl, which was meant not to warp. It aint so far.
tell craig fuller about the lyrics. pureprairie league put thu out in '72. mick arranged strings on a track. they got to know each other. they were human. it's a great song here and on the on the original as well.
HAVE to say, selby06, you should listen to Mick singing other songs on his solo albums (esp. "The Empty Bed", on "Play Don't Worry"), I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! He truly was a great vocalist, and, an outstanding 'ax-man'!
Keep in mind, Mick is doing a 'cover' of "Angel No.9#", the lyrics/song originally done by Craig Fuller/Pure Prairie League, on their excellent 'Country -Western Rock' album "Bustin' Out"; Mick's singing retains the 'twang' (alongside his English accent!).
P.S. - Wrote this before I saw your spot-on reply dugitomi.... Just as too many people know too little about Mick's multiple talents, too many only know the band Pure Prairie League for their hit song "Amy"; which, like (the original) Angel No.9, is also on "Bustin' Out!" - a classic album unto itself!
This is pretty fair, the guitar is top notch but the overall song is lacking in some ways. I still think his and bowies best stuff was when they were in the spiders from mars.
RIP Mick Ronson. He certainly was a very melodic guitarist and he had impeccable phrasing. I know it makes me sound old but I miss these songs. Thank you sidetrack 11 for this post.
I agree. He always had fantastic tone. On the Ziggy concert film the guitar took on an almost organ like sustain. Even the short solos he did on Hunter's songs his tone was magnificent.
Right about that San5a: some fool rated Mick #65, on a (Wikipedia/Lastfm) 'Top 100' list - all I can say is - they must've had the sound turned off; no way they listened to his playing!
In reality, Mick's right at the top of the heap, with his: astounding musicianship, multiple playing styles, experimentation/innovation, and influence (not to mention: collaborations, arrangements, compositions, singing, stage presence/performing, and his obvious absolute love of the music he made/played!
Yup, a rating like that had to have been 'tacked-on' with absolutely no consideration - completely independent - of Mick's talent(s)!
Money/sales have always been a factor, however it's been a relatively recent 'development' since all endeavors in any/every field: art, religion, education, politics, etc., have been classified/subsumed with respect to 'business': the art 'business', the 'business' of education, ....! The roots of the 'business' paradigm stem from Reagan's administration.
No he isn't. It is Michael Bergerman from pokeepsie. He is really the alter ego of Mick Ronson and (pretended) to die to take his next career as a school custodian.Clever, huh? LOL
I admit i`m a bit of a Ronno "noob" but ive just bought 2 cd`s just from hearing this brilliant song.. Got Main Man and Heaven and Hull (which is ironic cuz i live in hull and its a US import lol)
The picture of Mick wearing a hat was taken from his time with Bob Dylan during the 'Rolling Thunder Revue' tour in late 75 early 76. You can hear Mick play on Dylan's live 'Hard Rain' album.
Oh! The tone.

pick up the Pure Prarie League LP--Steppin Out (I think)--#9 is on there as well as Woman
Ronno gets some credit on the LP but not enuff on the production side
his guitar/style/sound is all over this LP
contractual problems limited his name on LP's like Mellancamp's for the song Jack and Diane---that's all Ronson!!
RIP Mick---- a true gentleman that put the 'whole' scenario infront of his own desires yet crafted some of the greatest songs in the 70-80's
